Scenic Shippensburg is a friendly and attractive college town in Cumberland Valley. Located on our county’s western-most border, it is still just a short drive from many metro areas including Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington, DC. Shippensburg offers a desirable balance of industry, agriculture and education-so it’s no wonder that Shippensburg has been rated as one of the “100 Best Small Towns in America.” Shippensburg University’s, the H. Ric Luhrs Performing Arts Center attracts world-class symphonies, dance performances and speakers.
April 2010: Forbes ranked Carlisle-Harrisburg (Cumberland, Dauphin and Perry) as No. 5 on its “most livable cities” list.
June 2010: Forbes ranked Carlisle-Harrisburg (Cumberland, Dauphin and Perry) as No. 2 among America’s best places to raise a family.
Fast ‘n Fun Fact: The annual “Corn Festival,” held the last Saturday in August, was started in an effort to raise money for the cost of preserving Shippensburg’s historic downtown. The idea of a corn festival was chosen because corn was the area’s biggest crop. The Corn Festival, rated the best one day festival in Pennsylvania by the Pennsylvania’s Festival Association, is a juried arts and crafts street fair featuring hundreds of crafts, an antique car show, food booths, entertainment and children’s activities.
