This woman was probably an American housewife whose husband’s brother was a colonel in the US Air force. She felt frustrated because she thought that war was senseless/useless/worthless. In her letter, she denounced the fact that innocent Vietnamese civilians were sometimes tortured by American soldiers or that too many young soldiers got wounded/injured or paralyzed during that conflict. She also said that it was unjustified and she protested against the government policy to raise/increase taxes in order to finance the war effort.

An exceptional destiny

Barack Obama’s mother was born in 1942 in Kansas, in the USA. She married Barack Obama Sr, a Kenyan with whom she had her first child, Barack Obama. Then, they divorced and she married again to an Indonesian; that’s why she moved to Jakarta. She had a daughter with him and she died of cancer in 1995.

She was generous, optimistic, humorous, tolerant and open-minded .

Barack Obama spoke in positive terms of her and he said that he inherited his ideas from his mother.
