A “senseless” war

This woman was probably an American housewife whose husband’s brother was a colonel in the US Air force. She felt frustrated because she thought that war was senseless/useless/worthless. In her letter, she denounced the fact that innocent Vietnamese civilians were sometimes tortured by American soldiers or that too many young soldiers got wounded/injured or paralyzed during that conflict. She also said that it was unjustified and she protested against the government policy to raise/increase taxes in order to finance the war effort.

Vocabulary:

An exceptional destiny

Barack Obama’s mother was born in 1942 in Kansas, in the USA. She married Barack Obama Sr, a Kenyan with whom she had her first child, Barack Obama. Then, they divorced and she married again to an Indonesian; that’s why she moved to Jakarta. She had a daughter with him and she died of cancer in 1995.

She was generous, optimistic, humorous, tolerant and open-minded .

Barack Obama spoke in positive terms of her and he said that he inherited his ideas from his mother.

A British independent school

Durham School is one of the oldest schools in Britain. It is a co-educational independent

boarding-school which welcomes between 450 and 500 pupils in senior school and 160 in junior

school who are aged from 3 to 18 years old. Pupils learn in small classes and they have to wear a

uniform composed of a dark blue jacket, a white shirt, a tie and blue trousers for boys. Girls

wear a skirt.

In the boarding-school, they are separated in single sex houses and they have to go to sleep at

9 pm.

They can do almost any type of extra-curricular activities like music, drama, singing or sports.

For example, they can practise rugby, hockey, snooker, ping pong, rowing and even army

training.They may also play netball and lacrosse.

4) Three different people are interviewed in this text:

- Clémence, a mother of a French family

- Dr. F. L’Hermitte, a nutritionist

- R. Robe, a chef

5) Clémence says that, in order to stay slim, we shouldn’t have too much fizzy drinks, sweets or sugared food. According to her, we should mostly eat vegetables.

The nutritionist says that we should follow her advice; that is to say eat three times a day at regular intervals without snacking.

Finally, the chef advises us to eat small portions if we want to lose weight or to keep fit.
