Fashion in France

After the end of WWI, women became emancipated.
In the 20′s, fashion is modern, it is the golden age for fashion designers : 2/3 of french women get dressed to measure.
Women have new outlines : thinness and tan are the trend, they wear short hair.

Because of the economic crisis, there is a flashback, in the 30s, to a more classical fashion. It is the begining of fashion photography and hair dye.
Clothes that appear :

long and tight-fitting dresses for the evening

clothes with padded shoulders

tight dresses tied in the back

It’s the Second World War and several brands like Chanel close, but some other workshops stay open. Feminine outline in the beginning of the 40’s is composed of wide shoulders, short dresses with tight waist and ball-sleeves. Then, women wear long dresses under cloaks. Christan Dior is discovered and becomes famous, and he invents the New Look.
Clothes that appear in the 40′s :

· U low-cut
· long skirts

In the fifties, many progresses are made: it’s the invention of polyester and acrylic. Thanks to these progresses, the ready-to-wear clothes concept was born in fashion workshops. The New Look is now everywhere in the streets. Chanel reopens.
In the USA, Hollywood stars like Marilyn Monroe and Lauren Bacall are models.
Elvis Presley, the King of Rock’n roll and James Dean launch blue jeans.
Hubert de Givenchy presents «Sack» dresses with straight lines. Christian Dior dies and his successor is Yves Saint Laurent.
At the end of the fifties, Mary Quant invents the miniskirt.

In the sixties, Brigitte Bardot, the icon of the liberation of women, inspires a sexier fashion.
Young women now wear trousers.
At the end of the sixties, the hippy movement is born.
Clothes that appear in the 60’s:
· Boots with miniskirts
· Colored tights
· The monokini
· Flared trousers
· Clothes with colored motives

In the seventies, it is the beginning of the Disco movement, with flared trousers, spangled clothes, combi-pants … (Bee Gees, Dalida, ABBA …).
The Punk movement appears in 1976 with bands like The Sex Pistols and Ramones. (tartan, blue jeans with holes under kilt, Dr Martens boots, studded bracelets, coloured spiky hair, safety pins as piercings…) The English fashion designer Vivienne Westwood opens a punk shop.
It’s also the creation of several brands of ready-to-wear clothes like Kenzo, Thierry Mugler and Jean Charles de Castelbajac.

Fashion is diversified in the 80′s. There isn’t an only trend.
For the first time in France, fashion becomes artistic. Fashion designers exhibit their work in museums and galleries.
Then there are Rock, Gothic and pop tendances.

· Flashy clothes and accessories
· Leggings with full sweatshirts and low-boots
· Teared blue jeans
· Joggings
· Basket trainers

In the 90′s, fashion goes back to basics of previous decades (trench coat, reefer jacket, sailor pull over, Levi’s blue jean, K-way, flares, dungarees).
There are inscriptions and smileys on T-shirts
The 90′s are a success for sport brands like Nike are Adidas.
