Suprising while watching the film?

I was surprised by the speed with which the wave spread and the seriousness of the acts of the teenagers. I was surprised by Tim’s suicide at the end I did not know it meant so much for him. I was surprised by Rainer’s speech at the end and by the fact that everybody believed what he said. The very good rock music surprised me. I was surprised at the start by Karo and Mona’s reaction to the wave because they guessed from the start that the wave was a bad idea. I was surprised by the way they teach in Germany. I was surprised by Marco when he slapped Karo I did not believe he would be able to do it. I was surprised by the influence Rainer has on his pupils at the end when he says “we must kill him (Marco)” pupils agree with him. I found it is very surprising to see the result of the wave movement because at the beginning the pupils did not believe that a dictatorship could be instored.

The film is surprising because it is unrealistic.

I found interesting the way the pupils dedicated so much to a school thing. Usually pupils do not care about school lessons because they think they are worthless.

THE WAVE:

Sympathy and antipathy:
Marco is nice / likable / . I feel sympathy for Karo because it is easy to understand why she is going to resist even if her boyfriend is in the other group. I feel sympathy for Rainer he did not want this project to take such proportions so he is a bit confused.

Karo is so determined in her ideas that she is as absolute as the Wave group. She is very stubborn.

I feel antipathy for Karo, butin life maybe if she does not like some thing she will be very unpleasant. I feel antipathy for Tim because

he never listens to his friends (don’t take it personaly) of course we may say he does not have any friends. I feel antipathy for Kevin because he looks like a show off and he is one. We may say there is always a show off in his way. He is getting on my nerve.
He buys his way into the group.

Could this story take place in France?

The story takes place in Germany in the film, it took place in America in real life, but t

he story could happen just anywhere.

The Wave:

TIM: a vulnerable young solitary teenager. He becomes very attached to the group having finally become an accepted member of a social group in his school. He is naive like all the other youngsters who belong to the Wave. He might be afraid of violence (giving drug for nothing, etc…) he meets the anarchists twice. The first time he is afraid the second time he belongs to the Wave and he masters his fear and he thinks he is almighty. He loves weapons, he does not look violent but he might be.
He is both a complex and important character .
Riener is the sport teacher who has to teach autocracy. At the beginning he wanted to teach anarchy but it is too late.

The school wanted to avoid any troubles. Autocracy is boring for pupils so he had to find a new way to teach and he found it…

He is very involved in his work but he does not realise that he is losing control.

Karo:
She is an intelligent girl, she tries to make her friends realise that they are making a mistake but she does not manage to do it. She belongss to the group called resistance on the role playing level.
She is helped by Mona who helps her against the Wave. She is fearless and does what she can to avoid letting the situation degenerate.

She is Marco’s girl-friend but because of the W. they are no longer in good terms. He realises too late that it is going too far. he is going to be taken over by the movement. He is a good friend of Herr Wenger

He is the first to witness the consequences. He is the first to belong to the W.

What themes have you found in the story? Help each other to find them out.

Each film / novel has one or many themes, dilemmas the characters deal with, things in society the writer wants to point at. What is the story about? What’s the idea?

To get ready to write about the film

  • Look for themes in the film.

  • Choose one or two you find interesting and have something to say about.

  • In a brief introduction you present the film in a few sentences. Then you state what theme/s you are going to discuss.

  • Present one theme at a time and how it is described in the film.

  • Discuss it by adding your own point of view.

  • You can also talk about how you have discussed the theme in your group.

What did the others think?

  • If you want to discuss more than one theme, you begin a new paragraph and repeat the process above.

  • End your text by giving an overall statement about the film, a conclusion about the message, including what you liked and disliked about it.

Our first thought on the film and yhe book: more to come…

This film makes us think and understand…

It shows us how this can happen anywhere, anytime. How a simple school project can degenerate into a dictature .

The experiment can grow into huge proportions and be quickly out of control.

We identify with the characters because they are teenagers like us

The movement grows too fast it happens in a week time and is becomes out of control . More so because it is based on a true story.

The teacher does not control the group any longer, at the end, he is less dedicated / devoted to the cause than the pupils.

The role play becomes reality and it has the same pattern as any other dictatorship.

Is the lesson about ideology or a goal?At first they had a real goal:“Just do it!”The first goal became an ideology. At a certain point the Wave becomes more important than their friendsAt the beginning the goal and principle is discipline and then the goal or ideology is to survive and to grow. It becomes to control everything even if on a small scale.
