Il s’agissait de lire des articles en français et d’en rendre compte en anglais. Pas si simple ! Mais les efforts ont porté leurs fruits. A vous de lire…

A dog not so stupid

Chaser and Pilly

The researchers in South Carolina (United States) have wanted to prove that dogs are as intelligent as the infants. These researchers are teachers of psychology in the Wofford College, Allison reid and John Pilley. They are studying successfully : the dog, Chester, a border Collie. He has learned 1 022 object names and has surpassed the other dogs, with their 200 and 340 words (Rico in 2004 and Betsy a little time later). Chester is capable of classifying the objects with their names, functions and shapes.

Their research has lasted three years, it is finished today and so, has proved that dogs are  intelligent and have a good memory with a training session every day;

I think that it is a good idea because people think most often that animals are stupid and they don’t understand them and they beat them. But if research proves that they have a conscience then these people will stop beating their dogs and they will love their pets. It is interesting because dogs have perhaps become intelligent with the link man/animal.

Food among Neanderthal people

Neanderthal

The scientists also see that Neanderthal wasn’t just carnivorous but rather omnivorous. Indeed the scientists found the particle of fruit and vegetables cooked in many different ways. We can think that Neanderthal wasn’t that wild. For Marylène Patou-Mathis, it isn’t surprising. For her Neanderthal people were able to cook because they had fire, so it was easy. Neanderthal had to migrate to find fresh fruit and vegetables. Now the scientists think that Neanderthal’s food diet is sophisticated. And so that is why they were not so wild.

Cashmere is becoming very expensive !

Yay I learned Entrelac
Creative Commons License photo credit: SewPixie

Goats are used for their wool. But wool is becoming very expensive, so it is a luxury product. Cashmere wool is bought by wealthy people because it costs a lot of money ! In 2011, we know that the price of wool will increase of 15 to 20%.

Today cashmere is a fashion product especially for people who have money. Eric Bompard is the only French person specialising in the sale of cashmere pullovers, and he has made cashmere more affordable. But he is pessimistic too and thinks the prices will increase. Partly because Chinese people have become the leaders of cashmere production and have managed to impose their prices !

Colour films are dead

Kodachrome films

Some time ago, in Parsons, Kansas, in the heart of the United States, a lot of people came from all over the country to Dwaynes’s Photo to develop their last colour Kodachrome films. Kodachrome is a process first marketed in 1935, and it has been used all over the planet since then. Referring to a decision from Kodak, the end of the production of Kodachrome films was announced in June 2009 because the sales were too low. All the centres responsible for the development of films all over the world disappeared one after the other.

Dwayne’s laboratory stopped its Kodachrome machines on december 30th, 2010, due to th erarity of his customers. However the boss received, according to The New York Times, thousands of films to be developed coming from the five continents. Dwayne was proud to have been the last craftsman to use the Kodachrome process. Although Kodachrome was a very esteemed process in the world, it could not compete with digital technology.

I find that totally stopping the production of Kodachrome is not necessarily a good solution. It had been a process marketed for years. « The best slide and film maker in history is officially retired. Kodachrome : 1935-2010. »

Why so many accidents ?

spider-man reboot
Creative Commons License photo credit: Daniel Semper

In the  world of cinema, at Broadway, a lot of accidents happen because of unsafe action scenes at training time !

For example, Christopher Tierney, lead actor in the musical « Spider-Man », fell from the top of a platform installed 10 meters high. He had injuries such as fractures on his face, his shoulder, his ribs and his ertebrae. He is the forurth person to be the visctim of a fall, but he was more seriously injured than the others… So the premiere of the show had to be postponed.

Julie Traymor, the stage director of this musical, is reporting about the budget for this work. She says it is 35 million dollars, and apparently it’s a record ! It is three times more expensive than an average show in New York !  According to her it’s « never-seen in Broadway » !!

Because of several falls, the head of the actors’union is suspending the show until new safety regulations have been found.

I think that further to th efalls, we should be more careful, and try to use protections… If the characters of the show go on falling, there could be a complaint about lack of security and they could completely ban the show.

Floods in north-east Australia

google images

On December 30th, 2010, Australia was the victim of a weather phenomenon, one of the worst natural disasters in its history of climate changes characterized by abnormally low temperatures in some areas of the Pacific. The disaster which hit Australia has devastated many towns and people in the province of Queensland. Some families were immediately evacuated, more than 200,000 of them covering an area as large as France and Germany combined.

« It’s a huge disaster. We had never seen so many cities, communities and regions affected at once. This is a heartbreaking event. » says Bligh who predicted the damages would cost more several billion dollars. The main branches of industry located in Le Bowen Basin have been affected and that region exports large quantities of coal in the world.

« Some mines are flooded. Others do not work long hours because the employees stay at home since they fear for their homes.  » says Jim Devine, the council for resources in Queensland. The mining sector is not the only one to be affected. The agricultural region of Queensland has been devastated too, especially the part that produces cotton, sugar and fruit. People expect  the price of sugar to rise because of this natural disaster in the following weeks.

I think that disaster is catastrophic because a lot of people have lost their homes and their hopes too.

A prodigy film maker

Alfred Hitchcock Presents
Creative Commons License photo credit: twm1340

This article deals with the cinema of Alfred Hitchcock. Alfred Hitchcock was an English film director and made six masterpieces :

- »The manxman » : it is a silent film. Hitchcock could not even choose the script. He was offered the story and had to accept it.

-Following the shooting of « the Manxman », he created a new film called « Blackmail ». The story here takes place in London in a dreary world thanks to pictures and sounds chosen to frighten you. Again, we recognise Hitchcock’s work.

-In 1932, Hitchcock made a new film, a « rich and strange » one. The story is tragic-comedy dealing with a young couple who makes a lot of money and decides to travel around the world. But, unfortunately they sink.

- »Jamaica Inn » was released in 1939 and tells a love story.

-Finally, in 1966 he created a new movie « The Torn Curtain ». it is a thriller which takes place during the cold war.

All these films can be seen at the moment in the « cinémathèque » in Paris Bercy or at the « Institut Lumière » in Lyons.

Paris during the battle

Les halles sous l'occupation par André Zucca

The article deals with the occupation of Paris during the Second World War.

André Zucca, a photographer, has set up an exhibition of photos which has made a debate. It has been criticised as propaganda. In the article we can see pictures of French and german people. We can also read about the radio which was used for propaganda or to tell the truth.  Actually the article shows two opposite sides of Paris : Paris collaborating with the Germans and the other Paris. The one of hunger and poverty. This Paris called Parisians to rebel in a pamphlet against the « traitor » – or the « affameur » : the people who cause you to famish.

Other pictures in the exhibition show the vel d’hiv, and a firing squad « Avenue porte de Sèvres », or even resistance fighters who were shot;

I find this very interesting and we have a duty to remember.

The indignation of the world

Show your indignation !

google images

This article deals with the indignation of five people : Boris CYRULNIK, Jean-marc BORELLO, Serge HEFEZ, Jean-François RIAL and Françoise HERITIER.

But I am going to interest more in Jean-marc BORELLO because he is indignant about the resignation of young people. He explains that the government is not interested in the young community. According to him, the government makes young people’s life difficult. They let the young people manage alone.

This text made me feel indignant because the young people are the future and the government has to help them and not let them down.
