Carnival in spain
Madrid carnival

The biggest carnival is in Madrid, carnival is the big outdoor celebration that includes parades.
It is in febuary; it’s every year on thursday “jueves ladero” or Greasy or Fat thursday
They dance, sing and enjoy themselves and it takes place the week prior to Ash Wednesday, the start of lent with beautiful costumes
It’s celebrated in many catholic countries; historically, this was the week when Catholics cleaned out the pantry in preparation for lent, called Cuaresma in Spanish. During 40 days of lent, which is up to Easter, Catholics did not eat any meat. So Carnival became a time to eat lots of meat and celebrate before the solemn observance of Lent began.

I saw your “posters” in the hall of our library. I helped Mrs Chatterbox putting themin order. Congratulations for your work !
I didn’t see Venice Carnival but it ’s a famous one. I read about it on books and I had a friend living near this place who explained me how it is. It’s like there is a sort of “flash-back” in the past, people live in the other society. It’s a sort of “historic” carnival. The most important thing is elegance, each one puts on his best “historic” clothes. There aren’t funny things. But it’s a carnival because each one turns into another boy or girl. He or she changes his/her life. In his/her usual life ,he/she is, for example, a simple worker and suddenly he/she is a dukeor duchess ! It’s carnival because the social rules disappear and a worker is as soon as important a duke or a duchess. Who is he or she ? You don’t know because he/she puts on a mask !
