Rheumatoid arthritis symptoms can be anything from a minor annoyance to a life-altering experience for people with this disease. Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disorder that causes your bodies defense mechanisms to attack otherwise healthy parts of your body; most commonly, your joints. In laymans terms, what basically happens is that you get fluid released into the joint space that causes swelling and discomfort. Most significantly, specific tissues in and around the affected joint become inflamed. As a result, people who have rheumatoid arthritis typically experience extreme pain and discomfort.

Generally speaking, rheumatoid arthritis symptoms initially include overall fatigue, a noticeable loss of appetite, morning stiffness that will usually last well over an hour, muscle soreness, as well as a generalized feeling of weakness. As you can imagine, these symptoms sound a lot like what might happen after spending a lot of time doing exercise or household chores. So, the key to distinguishing these symptoms from ordinary aches and pains is to take note of the persistence of these symptoms over time.

Other symptoms associated with rheumatoid arthritis include things such as anemia. That basically means that your bone marrow is not producing enough new red blood cells. You can sometimes also experience a burning sensation in your eyes as well as itchiness and some amount of discharge. Other symptoms that are more noticeable in late-stage RA is when the hands and feet develop deformities around the affected joints.

Another frequent and common symptom is limited range of motion. This is largely due to the fact that your joints are becoming increasingly swollen and filled with fluid. People may also experience a low-grade fever, and at times lung inflammation can also be present. Numbness and generalized tingling sensations have also been associated with rheumatoid arthritis symptoms.

As you can see, there are a wide variety of symptoms that could potentially alert an individual to the fact that they have this particular illness. It needs to be pointed out that the destruction of ones joints generally begins within two years after symptoms first present themselves. Therefore, it is critical that this disease be diagnosed early so that treatment can begin to help avoid rheumatoid arthritis symptoms and their destructive effects.

Friday Fragments is hosted by Mrs. 4444 at Half Past Kissin Time.

*You have to watch this video from Rheumatoid Arthritis Warrior!

Although David has psoriatic arthritis, not rheumatoid arthritis, I can totally relate to this video. I get tired of people saying, Oh, I have a touch of arthritis in my hands just like you do. The rheumatologists have told us that his psoriatic arthritis could develop into rheumatoid arthritis, so we feel a close kinship to our friends with RA.

*Did you know David doesnt wear a wedding ring? I bought him a white gold band when we got married. He lost it within a few months. We bought a cheap replacement band made of tungsten, but he never wears it. He says it bothers his hands. Its strange to me because he never mentions his hands hurting. The joints that bother him the most are his vertebra, hips, knees and wrists. He does have psoriatic arthritis in every joint in his body, except his shoulders, but his hands are still stronger than mine. He opens jars for me all the time.

*David has done very well lately. We noticed a big difference when David started taking Humira. He stopped having flares that left him bedridden. Weve now noticed another change with the Lyrica. They may not be able to diagnose David with fibromyalgia since he doesnt have any tender spots, but boy does the fibromyalgia medicine help! Dont get me wrong. Davids not going to take up jogging or anything, but we might be able to start going to Sunday School. He can walk Henry a little bit. Im afraid to get used to this new level of comfort. I still worry about him having a flare that will leave him bedridden, even though its been at least a year since hes had a flare like that. I dont want him going to a mens retreat or for training without me. What would happen if he flared? Who would take care of him?

*As of 5 PM Thursday, we still cant use our health insurance. COBRA has cashed our checks, and they show us as active, but they cant seem to tell our health insurance company or the mail order pharmacy. It makes me so mad! I was on the phone with them for an hour today, and they kept putting me on hold to talk with the health insurance company. Health insurance company was sent a fax, but they havent input the information into their computer system. They needed COBRA to give them our plan number, and they didnt like the plan number listed on my card. So guess what I get to do Friday morning? Spend another hour on the phone with COBRA, and then ask them to overnight Davids meds without any surcharge. Im not holding my breath.

Musculo-Skeletal Conditions
Must Be Treated Seriously Because of Financial
Impact

Musculo-skeletal conditions need to be
treated seriously because of the financial impact on New
Zealands economy, says Arthritis New Zealand.

The
Economic Cost of Arthritis in New Zealand
research
confirms the statement made by The Welfare Working Group
that people with musculo- skeletal conditions are more
likely to be on benefits and that the system is not
providing enough support for those on the sickness,
invalid’s and domestic purpose benefits to find work.

The
report states that over 25,000 New Zealanders will not work
this year due to arthritis. This will cost around $1.48
billion in lost productivity in 2010.

The Welfare Working
Group findings confirms these numbers when they identify
that people with musculo-skeletal disorders are driving up
the numbers of people on benefits.

Sandra Kirby, Chief
Executive of Arthritis New Zealand hopes this report will
help highlight how expensive arthritis is and the importance
of treating musculo-skeletal conditions seriously: Half
of the clients that have attended our clinics in the past 11
months were of the working age. This is totally consistent
with the report figures this disease attacks people in
their prime as well as our children and our seniors.

But Ms Kirby warns that helping people with arthritis to
stay in work requires more than wishful thinking:
Experience from overseas such as the European Fit for
Work programme shows us that to support people with
conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, to remain in work
requires investment into health services to ensure early
diagnosis and effective treatment.

All the evidence
shows that keeping people in the workforce is better for
them and the community but does require
investment.

The support services that Arthritis New
Zealand offers are vital in getting more New Zealanders back
to work after being diagnosed with a chronic illness like
arthritis. Employers must compliment these services by
providing a supportive work environment for arthritis
sufferers.

Heres
a guide to keep your bones healthy

Arthritis (joint swelling)
can be of many types. The most common type is osteoarthritis which is seen in
most cases. While some cases fall into the category of inflammatory arthritis,
eg, rheumatoid arthritis, gout etc. Osteoarthritis is primarily due to wear and
tear of the cartilage. Inflammatory arthritis is due to the production of
certain substances in the joint that directly damage the cartilage. The basic
problem with all forms of arthritis is the resultant cartilage destruction. A
cartilage is the cushion of the joint and in its absence the joint becomes
rough, painful and deformed. Irrespective of the cause or type of arthritis, the
final result in all these is end-stage arthritis in which the cartilage is
completely lost and surgeries are the only remedy.

Studies have
shown that osteoarthritis is now starting at an earlier age and younger people
are presenting with end-stage disease. Diseases like rheumatoid arthritis can
occur at any age.

Causes

It is felt that genetic and
environmental factors cause this illness. Changing urban lifestyles, sedentary
living, obesity, lack of exercise, smoking and increasing pollution are some of
the reasons.

Prevention

Due to the genetic element, it is not
possible to totally prevent arthritis but you can delay the onset and reduce its
intensity. A healthy, well-balanced diet, regular stretching and strengthening
exercise, weight control and avoiding smoking are some measures to delay the
onset of osteoarthritis. As regards rheumatoid arthritis, it is very important
that we treat it aggressively with medicines early on. With early diagnosis and
long-term medical management of rheumatoid, surgeries can be
avoided.

Treatment

In the early stages, the symptoms and
progression of arthritis can be controlled with medication, physiotherapy,
low-impact exercise, stretching, diet control, weight reduction, and activity
modification. In end-stage arthritis, the treatment is the same irrespective of
the cause. The affected joint has to be reconstructed with joint replacement and
resurfacing surgery.

Results of a new interesting study prove that it is possible to grow new joints by the use of stem cells

Results of a new interesting study prove that it is possible to grow new joints by the use of stem cells.

Scientists came to this unique finding after performing a series of experiments on rabbits, one that could lead to treatments for people with chronic joint pain caused from arthritis and other debilitating conditions.

For their study the team of scientists removed leg joints from 10 rabits and replaced them with an artificial joint infused with growth factor.

Stem cells within the rabbits bodies were attracted to the growth factor, travelled to the site and grew new cartilage and bone in two separate layers.

The new joints had full range of motion and could hold the weight of normal joints, a major breakthrough in the ongoing stem cell experimental field.

The study is published online in The Lancet.

At some point in his playing career at UCLA from 1998 to 2002, Matt Barnes witnessed Kobe Bryantworking out at Pauley Pavilion andperforming a feat only hecould pull off.

« I remember he had a broken right hand and I was just amazed he did his whole workout left-handed, » Barnes recalled with a laugh Tuesday whenwas introducedat the Lakers’ practice facility in El Segundo as the team’s newest member. « It was kind of crazy. »

That makes two of them.

Bryant and Barnes are nowhere near each other in playing stature. The former has collected five championship rings. The latter agreed to a two-year deal worth $3.6 million, with a player option for his second season, so he could realistically pursue a first title. Bryant continues to fuel conversation on the Lakers’ greatest-all-time players list. Barnes joins his eighth NBA team since leaving UCLAand the Northern California native finally landed in a place that he called a « lifelong dream. » Bryant is arguably bigger than the Lakers’ franchise, as indicated by the admission by Lakers General Manager Mitch Kupchak that Bryant works with his own medical staff at times, and that the GMwasn’t completely sure whether Bryant would have surgery this off-season for his right index finger. Barnes accepted less money to join the Lakers after rejectingthe guaranteed $7 million Cleveland offered, expressed no expectations on minutes and said, « I hope I’m one of those small pieces that helps get that third straight title. »

But as far as the crazy part? Yeah, they’ve both got it. Barnes is crazy enough not to have felt intimidated while testily guarding Bryant, most recently in the Orlando Magic’s 96-94 regular-season victory in March when Barnes pretended to inbound the ball toward Bryant’s face. Bryant’s crazy enough to see that as a sign that Barnes would be a good teammate. Therefore, it’s no coincidence that the two used the word « crazy » when they exchanged text messages this off-season.

« He told me anyone crazy enough to (explicit word) mess with me is crazy enough to play with me, » Barnes recalled. « Lets get it done. Hes one of the best competitors to play the game. I played with a lot of the same fire he does. Finally aftereight years in my career, Im finally done guarding him except in practice. Im glad hes going to be on my side hitting those game winners rather than hitting them on me or see him hit them on my team. »

Arthritis as well as Osteoporosis

Arthritis refers to over 100 ongoing conditions which especially begin mobile joints, articluar cartilage as well as synovial lining. Osteoarthritis is a degenerative condition which affects joints in hands, spine, as well as weight temperament skeleton similar to hips, knees as well as ankles. It breaks a articular cartilage. Osteoporosis is a thinning as well as weakening of skeleton which increases a risk of fractures. Rheumatoid arthritis is a ongoing automobile defence form of arthritis in which enzymes expelled by physique conflict a articular cartilage.

Causes as well as Risk Factors

Risk factors which have been usual to osteoporosis as well as osteoarthritis have been age, family story as well as operate too much of joints. However, in further to that, osteoporosis might additionally be caused due to menopausal reasons, operate of glucocorticoids as well as earthy condition medication, inactivity, smoking, extreme ethanol money coming in as well as anorexia nervosa. Excessive import is well known to means osteoarthritis as well as might not begin osteoporosis. Other factors embody thinness as well as low calcium intake.

Symptoms

Most usual arthritis symptoms for both a conditions have been corner pains, inflammation, low bone density, marked down corner flexibility, hard spurs, rigidity in joints, monster as well as marked down transformation of bones. People with rheumatoid arthritis might additionally uncover symptoms similar to fatigue, fever, weight loss, eye inflammation, anemia, subcutaneous nodules or bumps underneath skin a lung inflammation called pleurisy.

Treatment as well as Medication

The many usual diagnosis methodology used is medication. Various arthritis diagnosis options accessible for osteoporosis have been raloxifene, biophosphates, alendronate, risedronate, ibandronate, zoledronic acid, calcitonin, teriparatide, estrogen, calcium, vitamin D as well as NSAIDs. For osteoarthritis a single might operate weight government as well as NSAIDs. For Rheumatoid Arthritis a diagnosis options have been glucocorticoids, NSAIDs, methotrexate, disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs, biologic reply modifiers as well as growth necrosis cause inhibitors.

Pain government is critical partial of diagnosis of osteoporosis as well as arthritis. Pain remedy similar to NSAIDs, narcotics as well as flesh relaxants, rehabilitation, postural, isometric, isotonic as well as isokinetic exercises, corner splinting, earthy therapy, corner deputy surgeries for pain, monster or marred mobility, feverishness as well as cold therapy, rub a body therapy, acupuncture, ta chi, low highlight yoga as well as mental approaches similar to relaxation, cognisance as well as biofeedback might be used in diagnosis as well as suffering management.

Precautions

Those who fume as well as take complicated ethanol have been expected to locate a diseases. Hence a single should give up or extent a smoking as well as ethanol money coming in to a minimum. Exercise continually to keep your joints mobility as well as make up intact. Consult a alloy as well as begin a diagnosis during a beginning as osteoporosis as well as arthritis have been treated with colour with limit outcome when in primary stages. Include calcium abounding substances in your every day dishes as well as eat lots of fruits.

For example, osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis seem to respond to an increased dietary intake of fish oils, while gout benefits from avoidance of alcohol and offal meats. The supplements glucosamine and chondroitin may help symptoms of osteoarthritis, but not other forms of arthritis.

Always seek the advice of your doctor or dietitian before changing your diet. You may be restricting your food intake unnecessarily or taking too much of products (such as mineral supplements) that may have no impact on your condition at all. Some supplements can also interact with other medications.

General recommendations
General dietary recommendations for a person with arthritis include:

* Eat a well-balanced diet.
* Avoid crash dieting or fasting.
* Increase dietary calcium to reduce the risk of osteoporosis in later life.
* Drink plenty of non-alcoholic fluids.
* Keep your weight within the normal range, by reducing the amount of dietary fats you consume.

Dietary modification for gout
Uric acid is a waste product that is normally excreted from the body in urine. Gout is a type of arthritis characterised by the build-up of uric acid in the joints (such as the big toe), which causes inflammation and pain.

Dietary changes that may help to ease the symptoms of gout include:

* Restrict or avoid alcohol.
* Restrict or avoid offal meats, such as liver, kidneys and brains.
* Restrict or avoid shellfish, such as prawns and scallops.
* Restrict or avoid some seafoods including sardines, herrings, mackerel and anchovies.
* Restrict or avoid products containing yeast, such as beer and Vegemite.
* Drink plenty of non-alcoholic fluids.
* Make sure you dont overeat on a regular basis.
* Take your time when eating.

Rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis
Fish oils that contain omega-3 fatty acids have been found to help reduce the inflammation associated with some forms of arthritis, such as rheumatoid arthritis.

The omega-3 fatty acids seem to work by reducing the number of inflammatory messenger molecules made by the bodys immune system. There may be additional health benefits to eating foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, including a lowered risk of asthma and prostate cancer.

Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids include:

* Oily fish (such as salmon and sardines)
* Linseeds and linseed (flaxseed) oil
* Canola (rapeseed) oil
* Walnuts
* Some fish oil supplements.

Ask your doctor before taking any supplements, to ensure the correct dosage. Fish liver oils (such as cod liver oil) contain high levels of vitamin A and should not be taken in large doses.

Other supplements
The supplements glucosamine and chondroitin are popular. Yet evidence about their success in treating arthritis is limited.

Studies show that glucosamine and chondroitin, taken either separately or in combination, may relieve pain for people with osteoarthritis (OA), where there has been a breakdown of cartilage. There is no evidence that these supplements are effective for any other forms of arthritis.

Glucosamine and chondroitin may interact with other medications, including warfarin, and should only be taken after consultation with your doctor.

Obesity may worsen arthritis symptoms
If you are overweight or obese, the extra load on your joints may be exacerbating your arthritis symptoms, especially if your affected joints include those of the hip, knee or spine. There is also a clear link between being overweight and an increased risk of developing osteoarthritis.

To lose excess weight you must be active, but this can be difficult for people with arthritis due to pain or stiffness. See your doctor, dietitian or health professional for information and advice. Weight reduction strategies may include:

* Switch to a diet that is high in nutrition, while low in kilojoules.
* Experiment with different sorts of activities for example, it may be possible to enjoy swimming or some kinds of low impact exercises.
* Limit your exercise activities to unaffected joints for example, if your hands are affected, you may be able to comfortably ride on a stationary bicycle.

Current evidence for dietary cures is sparse
Gout can be helped by avoiding some foods. However, there is no substantial scientific evidence that other forms of arthritis can be helped by avoiding particular foods, unless that person has specifically shown intolerance to them.

There is no evidence that acidic foods (such as lemons), nightshade foods (such as tomatoes, potatoes and eggplants) or dairy foods trigger arthritis symptoms. These foods all contain important nutrients and avoiding them may be a health risk.

As research reveals more connections between diet and health, it is possible that stronger connections between particular foods and arthritis may emerge.

Tips for managing arthritis and diet
If you think a particular food may aggravate your arthritis, it can help to keep a diary of your food intake and symptoms. After a month, you may have some idea about which food could be provoking symptoms. You could then try removing that food from your diet for two weeks.

Dont cut out a whole food category for example, all dairy products and make sure you are getting the vitamins and minerals that this food provides from other sources. It is important to let your doctor know that you are doing this.

Remember that remission may be coincidental
The symptoms of arthritis, particularly the inflammatory types, can change for no apparent reason. Dont assume any improvement in your symptoms is due to what you eat or avoid. Be guided by your health professional.

Where to get help

* Your doctor
* An Accredited Practising Dietitian, Dietitians Association of Australia
* Arthritis Foundation of Victoria Tel. (03) 8531 8000 or 1800 011 041

Things to remember

* Arthritis is a general term describing over 100 different conditions that cause pain, stiffness and (often) inflammation in one or more joints.
* No special diet or miracle food can cure arthritis, but some conditions may be helped by avoiding or including certain foods.
* Fish oil can ease the symptoms of inflammatory types of arthritis, such as rheumatoid arthritis.
* The symptoms of gout can be eased by avoiding alcohol and offal meats, and by drinking plenty of water.
