When Charlene Davis was growing up in Durham, she imagined becoming a doctor so she could help her mother, who had rheumatoid arthritis.

When she was offered a scholarship to N.C. Central University in Durham that required going into teaching, she decided to take that route instead. « It was the right thing for me, » Davis, 59, said. « Being in education is probably one of the most rewarding things you can do. »

After she graduated in 1974, she taught in Durham. Her husband, Richard Davis, was a sociology professor, and, nine years after she started teaching in Durham, his career took them to the University of Oklahoma where she finished up the master’s degree she had started at UNC Chapel Hill.

When he was offered a job at Winston-Salem State University, they came to Winston-Salem, and she got a job teaching at Forest Park Elementary School. He later taught at Wake Forest University and High Point University. She earned a certification in educational administration and supervision from UNCG Greensboro.

Davis left Forest Park to become the curriculum coordinator at South Fork Elementary. She went on to become first the assistant principal and, later, principal at Sherwood Forest Elementary. She opened Meadowlark Elementary in 1998, and, in 2001, she went to the school system’s central office as an assistant superintendent for elementary schools.

Six years ago, she reached the 30-year-mark for retirement. Right now, though, she is focused on helping the students at Petree. « I am going to give it all I have because that is the way I am, » she said.

Septic arthritis is the purulent invasion of a joint by an infectious agent. This condition is caused by bacteria which are normally carried by the bloodstream from an infectious source. The bacteria are normally introduced by a skin lesion that penetrates the joint or by extension from an adjacent tissue.

For this infection to occur, the micro-organisms must reach the synovial membrane of the joint. This can happen in several ways. One is via the dissemination of pathogens through the blood from for example an infectious wound. It can also be through dissemination from an infection from an adjacent soft tissue. Entry can also be through a penetrating trauma as well as via iatrogenic means.

There are a number of bacteria that are responsible for this disease. Staphylococcus aureus is the most common cause of septic arthritis in adults while streptococci is the second most common cause. Haemophilus influenzae was the common cause of this disease in children but it is now rare particularly in areas where haemophilus vaccination is in use. Neisseria gonorrhoea causes this disease in young adults while escherichia coli are responsible for this infection in the elderly.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria have been found to infect joints particularly in children who have wounds. This bacteria is also responsible for endocarditis. Diagnosis of this disease is difficult because there is no test that is able to completely rule out the possibility of this disease. Joint pains are normally considered during the diagnosis of this disease. Septic arthritis can be treated using therapy, antibiotics, analgesia as well as by aspiration of the joints to dryness.

The findings helped to explain anecdotal reports of how patients who undergo
bee sting therapy report improvement in their condition.

Dr Suzana Beatriz Verssimo de Mello, an associate professor in rheumatology
who led the research at the University of So Paulo, in Brazil, said bee
venom caused increased levels of anti-inflammatory hormones called
glucocorticoids.

She said: « Bee venom is a complex mixture of substances that are known to
induce immune and allergic responses in humans.

« Nevertheless, bee venom has been used to treat rheumatoid arthritis for
centuries. However, the placebo effect has been described in studies
investigating bee venom anti-inflammatory properties in arthritic patients.

« Our data shows that bee venom prevents the development of induced
arthritis in rabbits through the action of glucocorticoids. »

Bee
Sting Therapy, in which patients endure hundreds of stings by bees in
the hope of getting better, is often used as a form of alternative medicine
to treat a range of conditions such as asthma and multiple sclerosis.

The new research is the first time a scientific explanation has been shown for
the effect.

Professor Alan Silman, medical director of Arthritis
Research UK, warned that it may be some time before any clinical
applications could be found.

He said: « Failure to have an adequate steroid response might allow
rheumatoid arthritis to take hold, so the bee venom is a way of stimulating
the body’s natural steroids to respond to the auto-immune processes that
causes rheumatoid arthritis.

« However, knowing anecdotally that when some people with inflammatory
arthritis are stung by bees their pain goes away for a short while is one
thing; actually turning these early laboratory findings into a practical
clinical application is quite another. »

One new addition to my RA protocol is low-dose Naltrexone, which I would encourage anyone with RA to try. It is inexpensive and non-toxic, and I have a number of physician reports documenting incredible efficacy in getting people off of all their dangerous arthritis medications.

The drugs typically used for rheumatoid arthritis are some of the most dangerous drugs used in medicine. High doses of prednisone are common, as well as immunosuppressants and anti-cancer agents to treat the severe pain and swelling.

Low-dose Naltrexone, however, does not fall into this dangerous category.

Naltrexone (generic name) is a pharmacologically active opioid antagonist, conventionally used to treat drug- and alcohol addiction normally at doses of 50mg to 300mg. As such, it’s been an FDA approved drug for over two decades.

However, researchers have found that at very low dosages (3 to 4.5 mg), naltrexone has immunomodulating properties that may be able to successfully treat a wide range of autoimmune diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis (MS), Parkinson’s, fibromyalgia, and Crohn’s disease, just to name a few.
