« Les Calanques de Marseille »

A « calanque » is a geological formation presenting the particular form of a narrow and deep valley that has step banks, partly submerged by the sea.We find that form around the Mediterranean, and under this name in the Southeast.

Dug from a resistant limestone or granitic rock, these creeks create the many landscapes of the Mediterranean coast.

The calanques de Provencegive the coast a very cut up profile.

The sea water is fresher because many streams flow into the sea, beneath its surface, by an underground network that collects runoff from mountain plateaus.

Thus,a large underground river  flow results in the cove of Port Miou, almost at sea level. It seems to come from the massive rock formation.

The multiplicity of creeks on the coast of massive Marseilleveyre, south of Marseilles, gave the name of this mountain calanques. Hence the name of this often refers to the mass in question, and not just the creeks them selves.
