SOUND ON…

Listen to this and read the text below

This is 1A. I’m Jane Wide in Washington and today we celebrate Thanksgiving with a tribute to the sounds of America. For the next hour we’ll listen to the audio preserved for all time in the National Recording Registry, these are recordings chosen by the Library of Congress for their importance to American culture and society, sounds that mean America. It all started in 2002 when Congress recognized that technologies were changing : cylinders were replaced by vinyl records then along came tape cassettes then CDS then MP3s, now thanks to the National Recordings Registry, no matter what the original technology, no matter what the original technology, we’ll always be able to use these audio gems There’s music, ( extract of Minnie the Moocher), (excerpt from Stand by your Man), (excerpt from YMCA),(excerpt from When Doves Cry), (excerpt from a rap tune) and not just music. The Registry preserves comedy, (excerpt from a comedy) (excerpt from an interview), they save famous moments of sports, and protect and preserve the important events of the day : (excerpt from MLK’s I Have A Dream speech), ( excerpt from Neil Armstrong’s declaration during the landing on the Moon). The diversity of the recordings highlight the richness of our nation’s legacy and ensures that this legacy will continue for generations to come.

TOM’S DINER by Susan Vega

Watch the video  and practice the song

I am sitting
In the morning
At the diner
On the cornerI am waiting
At the counter
For the man
To pour the coffeeAnd he fills it
Only halfway
And before
I even argueHe is looking
Out the window
At somebody
Coming in »It is always
Nice to see you »
Says the man
Behind the counterTo the woman
Who has come in
She is shaking
Her umbrella

And I look
The other way
As they are kissing
Their hellos

I’m pretending
Not to see them
Instead
I pour the milk

I open
Up the paper
There’s a story
Of an actor

Who had died
While he was drinking
It was no one
I had heard of

And I’m turning
To the horoscope

And looking
For the funniesWhen I’m feeling
Someone watching me
And so
I raise my headThere’s a woman
On the outside
Looking inside
Does she see me?No she does not
Really see me
Cause she sees
Her own reflectionAnd I’m trying
Not to notice
That she’s hitching
Up her skirtAnd while she’s
Straightening her stockings
Her hair
Has gotten wet

Oh, this rain
It will continue
Through the morning
As I’m listening

To the bells
Of the cathedral
I am thinking
Of your voice…

And of the midnight picnic
Once upon a time
Before the rain began…

I finish up my coffee
It’s time to catch the train
