New year’s day !!

14 12 2014

In France, new year’s day is an important celebration, I can’t wait for it because I enjoy the parties we do for it. It’s a break in our daily life. Here the 1st of January is a bank holiday because people have to rest after the party they do for this celebration. For students, it’s during the christmas holidays. We have a good time, with our friends or family because it’s just like a new beginning. We take wishes for new year’s (« bonnes résolutions » in french) for this new year to improve our life style like to do a diet, stop smoking etc… But personally I never respect my wishes because I forget what there were at the end of January. In the night between the 31st of December and the 1st of January, when it is midnight we all do the countdown and when it’s midnight we all kiss each other.

That’s new year’s day in France !!

Et chez vous ? Comment se passe le nouvel an ? Vous avez des traditions particulières ?

Celebration in France: 14 July

11 12 2014

The french national day or « 14 Juillet » takes place on July 14th every year.  During this day noone works in the country.

The day of the french national day was chosen in 1880. That day refers to two events.

On  July 14th 1789, the citizens of Paris, who were angry about the government and starving after two horrible summers seasons for the crops, took La Bastille, a fortress which was also a prison and a symbol of the royal autority. It’s how the french revolution began. During that attack of La Bastille, the commander of the fortress order to defend the place against the rabid citizens but when the national guard came to repress the revolutionary, the soldiers joined the citizens and with their help, citizens took the fortress. All the defenders and the commander were killed and the fortress was destroyed, rocks by rocks and those rocks were sold to the people of Paris.

The second reference is on July 14th 1790, the « Fête de la fédération » (Federation day), the first anniversary of « La prise de La Bastille) and of the Revolution. The difference between the two is symbolic, the « Fête de la Fédération » is a day of national union, during that day the king Louis XVI, the citizens of Paris and the deputies of the 83 departements of France were here (at that date, France was still a monarchy).

« Les gras «

11 12 2014

I’m going to speak to you about something really famous in our city which is called  » les gras » .  It’s a party which began in 1835, at that time it was a day when everybody dressed-up and walked on streets or places and it’s still the same things ! Our city is a big port as you already know and that created a really special atmosphere ,very friendly and welcoming where everybody loved having parties, especially when fish-men came back , there was really a lot of animation in this town; it was well-known for this. Our love for this party still exists years after years , people who come from douarnenez really love their country for many details like that . In fact it lasts during 3 days dusk till dawn , it is very cool because  streets are always on the move , there is music , brass bands , merry go rounds , children,  adults, parades , place where you can eat some sweets , it’s very euphoric, strange and offbeat if you haven’t seen it before. People begin to create their costums many weeks before the day , it’s  even good fun to prepare it , you make it with your friends and it’s always an hilarous moment , lots of people don’t  say in what they are dressed-up to keep the surprise , so when everybody meets up at the place it is pretty cool ! Everybody plays his role and it looks like an enormous theater ! The first day a puppet called « Den-Paolig » which must represent a famous person of the city is hung above the place , it’s several meters high, and the last day we burn it.783675_6875013-photogras-m141aAffiche gras1222233_9206768-gras-r127d

Christmas in France :)

8 12 2014

Christmas is firstly the occasion to be with one’s family. People spend their night in the house of their grand parents, parents or friends… The 24th is the day called the christmas eve , it’s the moment when children wait for father christmas and to have their gifts. The moment of the gifts is different in each family: some have it during the night of the 24th and others  it’s the 25th morning :).

Moreover in each town there are decorations of lights in order to celebrate christmas and the new year. It’s quite pretty!! for example in our  region there is a town which is  famous thanks to its light decorations. Rochefort en terre attracts a lot of people from different places… and yes it’s simply amazing to see that during the christmas season ;).. All the towns are amazing !

At school the children who are quite eager to see father christmas sing the song of Christmas  » petit papa noël ». It’s a song known by everyone and really common to hear it when you are with a child or close to an elementary school. The song is like :

Petit papa Noel
Quand tu descendras du ciel
Avec des jouets par milliers
N’oublie pas mon petit soulier.
Mais avant de partir
Il faudra bien te couvrir
Dehors tu vas avoir si froid
C’est un peu à cause de moi.

Le marchand de sable est passé
Les enfants vont faire dodo
Et tu vas pouvoir commencer
Avec ta hotte sur le dos
Au son des cloches des églises
Ta distribution de surprises.

Petit papa Noel

Pour voir si tu m’as apporte
Tous les beaux joujoux que je vois en reve
Et que je t’ai commandes

Petit papa Noel
Quand tu descendras du ciel
Avec des jouets par milliers
N’oublie pas mon petit soulier.
Mais avant de partir
Il faudra bien te couvrir
Dehors tu vas avoir si froid
C’est un peu à cause de moi.

Of course there are several other songs like « vive le vent d’hiver » but the first is the most popular 🙂 !!

have a nice day bye !! 🙂 Illuminations-Rochefort
