So disappointed by Tim Burton!

I’m sorry but if you like Tim Burton and if you think that he’s a genius of the cinema, you probably won’t like this article . The thing is I like less and less Burton’s movies. he has his own world and some interesting ideas but we often find  the same elements :the staging,  the music (often made by Danny Elfman),the characters (always alone, marginal and tortured). Johnny Deep is often present (in 8 films) as Helena Bonham Carter (in 7 films). The only movie that seems to be detached from this scheme is Ed Wood output in 1994 ( a black and white movie which chronicles the life of « the worst Hollywood’s directer »). It’s my favorit film of Mr Burton.

  • I am much less admirative for Alice in wonderland ,output in 2010. Despite a quite well done comic, this movie is a perfect copy of his previous films ( except Ed Wood). We feel that Burton doesn’t try to innovate anymore and merely uses his usual visual and his favorits actors.
  • Moreover, in this movie, the main character isn’t really Alice, but the Mad Hatter played by Johnny Deep again (to believe that Burton has a true « Depp-endance »).In fact ,he is the most accentuated character (always in my opinion), more than Alice. We can also find this in Charlie and the chocolate factory where the character of Willy Wonka (also played by Johnny Deep!) is much more important than Charlie.
  • Burton takes some liberty with the original story of « Alice in wonderland », making it darker (representing « underland » rather than « wonderland »), to better match his world ( which is a good thing).

Even if the story is overrall well done and the visuals are remarkable (especially in 3D), I think this movie stay too little innovative and not equal Tim Burton’s first movies (like Edouard Scissorhands or Sleepy Hollow )

  1. I don’t think that Tim Burton is a  » genius of the cinema », but I think that it’s undeniable to say that these movies please for the greater part, and that the theme of the fantasy is often well showing

  2. We find often the same elements but I will always think that Tim Burton’s movies are great!

  3. When we watch a movie by Tim Burton, we know immediately that it’s one of his movies even if we don’t know the film director and I think it’s the most important thing for an artist, a musician, a film director etc… The singularity and the originality of a work is very important. So, I agree with you, there are always the same actors but a movie with Johnny Depp and an atmosphere very strange and fanciful, belongs to Tim Burton. It’s his world and we can love or hate.

  4. The characteristic of Tim Burton is this crazy world it’s his singularity … When we can see in these movies, we expect to see this universe with these otherness and these similarities. I’m disagree with you about « Alice in Wonderland », Tim Burton was managed to create a other atmosphere and a sequel in his image. It’s my opinion about Tim Burton.

  5. I don’t agree with you : Tim Burton makes us laught and dream with his fantasy. Like Alice in Wonderland, we can see the magnificient landscape, an unrealistic story but special effets are. Some people have pleasure to show Tim Burton’s movies thanks to his modernity. I think Tim Burton is a great director!

  6. I agree with Camille : Tim Burton communicate an other point of view of a story. Thanks to his film sets, he captive the spectator. He has a particular world and it’s her strength.

  8. I think that Tim Burton like others directors have their own world, so in their films we often find again repetitives elements.
But for my part, I have been disapointed by the film Alice in Wonderland.

  9. I agree with, I think that Tim Burton isn’t a genius of the cinema even if his films are eccentric and enjoyable.
