Lion, Garth Davis

Hi everybody !

Today I would like to talk about the movie Lion directed by Garth Davis, and adapted from the novel A long way home written by Saroo Brierley.

Garth Davis is a young australian beginner in the film industry, with only « big » creation : a TV serie name Top of the Lake with Jane Campion. However in realizing Lion Garth Davis is at the top of the great directors. Lion is an autobiographical film from a true story.

It’s the story about Saroo, a young indian boy, who gets lost in India. After days of walking the little boy arrives in Calcutta, capital of West Bengal, city of nearly 4,5 million inhabitants. During few months Saroo wanders and learns to survive alone before being hosted in an orphanage and being adopted by an Australian couple. 20 years later Saroo still lives in Australia but his memories, his biological family, his roots call him to their search.

Lion became one of my favorite movies. The authenticity of the actors and the sets ( the film was shot in the town of Calcutta). The director shows us the reality without embellishing it, notably by denouncing the actual penomenon of children left in the streets ending by disappearing in thousands without the government reacting. Dev Patel (Saroo adult) and Sunny Pawar ( Saroo child), interpret briantly the character with a certain humility what makes the character very endearing. During this film we cry, we smile but on leaving we ask ourselves the right questions about our human condition for example.
