For the last article, I’d like to talk about one of my favourite series: Scorpion. I have started it recently, thanks to a good friend (hi Jeanne), but as soon as I watched the first episode I loved it and I immediately hooked on the concept, which seems to be slightly different from what I have seen.

Scorpion is an american serie produced by Nick Santora and released on September, 22, 2014. There are three seasons, and it was renewed for a fourth one ! It is based on Walter O’Brien’s life, a computing expert who founded « Scorpion Computer Services Inc. » and who has one of the biggest IQ in the world (he has hacked NASA when he was only 13).

Now let’s talk about the series. « Scorpion » is the name of a team composed of four genius : Toby Curtis, a behaviorist graduated from Harvard, Sylvester Todd, a human calculator, Happy Quinn, a great mechanic and Walter O’Brien, one of the most intelligent person in the world. But as they’re genius, they don’t really know how to interact with others and express their feelings. So they « hired » Paige Dineen, a former waitress who helped them in the first episode. Her role is simple : she helps them to « translate the real world », as they said. It means that she helps them to interact with « normal » people. In exchange, they help her to understand her son, Ralph, who is also a genuis. Finally, the last (but not least!) member is Cabe Gallo, a Federal Homeland Security Agent. Together, they deal with different problems which require their intellectual capaticies. They always do their best to help Homeland Security, and sometimes to save lives. There are many turnarounds, and they often have to b
reak the law (for instance, they can hack governmental computers).

All along the series, you see the character’s evolution through the cases they have to face. Even if sometimes it seems impossible to solve, Scorpion always make it. Also, the actors perfectly fit their roles. According to me, Toby is the funniest character since he analyses his friends’ behaviors. Moreover, watching them reasoning in such a scientific way makes you want to become a genius…! But unfortunately, our IQs are lower…

I really advice you to start this series. It gathers all the ingredients of a good one : great actors, action, suspense, humor, and even love stories…

The series faced many bad reviews but when you think about it, the idea of presenting the daily life of a team of genius rescuing people can be complicated. Unless a real genius produces it, you can’t have detailled theories or calculations. Nonetheless, I don’t think it removes credibility because their explanations seem relevant. And no one needs to have made long scientific studies to understand their reasoning.

Let me know if you’re a fan, or if you already watched it.

the Spy – Paulo COELHO

Today I would like to talk about Paulo Coehlo’s last novel : the Spy. The novel tells the story of Mata Hari, a woman accused  of spying for the Germans and so betraying her country.  Coelho imagines one of the last letters  that Mata Hari wrote from her prison, a week before her execution , to his lawyer  and the answer of the last one.

Margaretha Geertruida Zelle, also known as Mata Hari, arrived in Paris in the early 20th century. She managed to become a famous dancer and to seduce her public, including affluent and powerful men. But admiration soon gave place to jealousy. Arrested in 1917, she is shot in the courtyard of the fortress of Vincennes at the dawn of October 15. The prosecution is simple : we think Mata Hari  stood with the Germans during the First World War. However, it had appeared during her trial that she never provided the least valuable information, either to the Germans nor to the French. Then, why these accusations?

Through his novel, Paulo Coelho makes Mata’s voice heard. Page after page, we learn more and more about this woman in search of freedom. He makes us think about this improper execution. All along the book, he captures the legend and takes us into the universe of the 1900s and of the First World War. We are absorbed by Mata Hari’s destiny, an innocent woman who was shot. Perhaps she was guilty of being free, of enjoying life, money and men, of becoming one strong woman. According to Coehlo, guilty of being « one of the first feminists ».

I admit that before reading it, I didn’t know who Mata Hari was. If I bought this book, it’s only because I like the writer and the cover looked nice. And honestly, I don’t regret! Coelho’s writing makes the novel easier to read, and in the end you’re just like « wow it is sooooo fascinating! » If you’ve also never heard about Mata Hari’s story, I advice you to read the book. As a huge fan of both history and Coelho, I obviously loved this novel! It is incredibly captivating and interesting. By the way, a few movies about Mata Hari’s life also exist.

I promise it’s worth reading it!

The Color Purple – Alice Walker

I’ve recently read a novel very touching, so I’ve decided to write an article about it. The Color Purple is a novel written by Alice Walker and published in 1982. It faced censorshipduring the 90’s since it was judged as inappropriate and too violent.

With epistolary form, the book tells the story of Celie, a 14 year old afro-american young lady. Deprived of education during her childhood, she lives with Alphonso, the man who took her away from her family. As she isn’t aware of « the good and the bad », she let him rape her and get her pregnant twice. She has a little sister, Nettie, who’s 12 years old. One day, a man comes to ask for Nettie’s hand. Alphonso refuses and proposes to give Celie instead of his younger girl. The man, named Albert, accepts. But he will treat Celie as bad as you can imagine. With him, she has another child : Harpo. After growing up, he falls in love with Sofia, a women with « shapes ». Anyway, Harpo tries to submit her to him, as his father asked. But Sofia resists. Celie first encourages his son to keep trying to submit the girl (the only thing she learnt is the fact that women are inferior to men…) But soon after she realises she was wrong and stands with Sofia. Then, Celie’s husband brings his lover at their house because she has health problems. At first, Shug (his lover), treats Celie as someone less than nothing. But gradually, the two women get to know each other and their friendship begins. Although Shug feels better, she stays to protect Celie from her husband. Both become more and more intimate: they have an ambiguous relationship now. But if Celie thinks that everything will be easier now, she is wrong. Many other difficulties are waiting for her… It’s up to you to discover which ones !

I admit that sometimes it is quite hard to read, but I assure you it’s worth reading it ! And if you’re not especially a fan of books, you can also watch the movie directed by Spielberg.

Café society by Woody Allen

Café Society is a movie directed by Woody Allen and released in 2016.

The plot unfolds in the 30s. The main character, Bobby (Jesse Eisenberg), works in his father’s jewelry but he can’t stand his job anymore. Luckily for him, his uncle (Steve Carell) is a wealthy artistic director in Hollywood. So Bobby decides to leave his peaceful life and to go to the Hollywood conquest. To do so, he asks his uncle to let him work in his agency. First, it is a failure : his uncle refuses because Bobby doesn’t seem to have the required qualities. But, after several attempts, he finally accepts to hire him… but as a  running menial errands ! Even if it isn’t what Bobby excepted, he takes the job. Soon after, he meets Vonnie (Kristen Stewart), his uncle’s assistant. He instantly falls in love with her… Unfortunately the last one is already taken. For all that, he persists because Vonnie is actually the only thing that matter for him since he can’t find any interest to his new life in Hollywood. As a misfortune never happens alone, Bobby will find out that his uncle is the one dating Vonnie. He will have to move forward, but it is without counting the other difficulties which are waiting for him.

All along the movie, we are witnessing each character’s failures. Even if the scenario lasts only a few years, we easily depict their miserable lives. Indeed, they mostly feel remorses and regrets although they belong to the upper class.

As always, Allen managed to captivate us. We all can recognize ourselves into one of the characters. Furthermore, the movie brings together all the « ingredients » necessary to please us : comic scenes, a one-way love story, unexpected elements… But above all : excellent actors. By the way, special mention to Jesse Eisenberg who perfectly fits Bobby’s role.

As you probably understood, I really like this movie. If you never saw it, I advice you to do. Here’s a little foretaste :

Breaking Bad

Hello hello.

Breaking Bad is a series created by Vince Gilligan and broadcasted for the first time on January 20th, 2008. It counts five seasons, that is to say sixty-five episodes.

I started this series one year ago but recently I’ve decided to start it again so here I am , writing an article about it. I have to say that it is the best show I’ve ever seen so far!!
First, let me introduce you the plot. It unfolds in Albuquerque in New Mexico. The show focuses on Walter’s story : a chemistry teacher who figures out that he is affected by cancer, which besides is in terminal phase. Wanting to be sure that his wife and his two children will have a profitable future (without him as he only has two years to live), he becomes a drug dealer. With Jesse Pinkman’s help, a former student, he starts cooking and selling crystal meth. Quickly, both realize that making a name in the drug world is not so easy although their product is almost perfect. They will have to face many competitors and difficulties, at their own risks.

All along the show, we become attached to the characters without being aware of it. We see the characters’ evolution, and we feel connected to them. I don’t know how to explain this but we become absorbed by the story at the point that we try ourselves to work this out. The most important thing is that we don’t expect what’s going to happen. And to conclude about the story, I will say that the end will leave you open-mouthed, with the feeling that you want even more episodes.

As I am not the only one to think that Breaking Bad is one of the best series, if it is not the best! It won many many awards such as fifteen Emmy Awards, twelve Primetime Awards and so on… Also, in many well-known websites we can see several times that the show is in the first three rows in the classification of the best series.

If you’ve never heard about Breaking Bad (if it is the case, shame on you) or if you never watched it because you thought it wasn’t that good, you really should watch it.  And I am pretty sure that you won’t regret it

Harry Potter and the cursed child – Jack Thorne

Being a huge fan of Harry Potter, I couldn’t miss the new book named Harry Potter and the cursed child. And so I’ve decided to write an article about it.

First, let me tell you that this sequel, if we can say so, is the script of the play which has the same title. We can find the same characters, the same universe… But 19 years after the last book. Indeed, Harry is 37 years old now, and has two sons : James Sirius Potter and Albus Severus Potter, and one daughter : Lily Luna Potter. Moreover, Harry is working for the magical law enforcement. About Hermione, she is now the minister of magic. Also, she is married to Ron (who is holding « Weasley’s wizard wheezes ») and has two children : Rose and Hugo Granger-Weasley. To conclude about the characters, Draco is also present, with his son Scorpius Malfoy but without his wife since we learn that she is dead.

Now I will talk a little about the story. The story begins at the King’s cross station and the Hogwarts Express’ arrival. Harry’s son, Albus, and Hermione’s daughter, Rose, are in the train (it reminds us when Harry and Ron took it in the first book). But unlike the original story, Albus is becoming friend with Scorpius. Anyway, both are chose to integrate Slytherin, whereas Rose is going to Gryffindor. Then, and for their time in Hogwarts, we will see the three kids facing many difficulties, and especially for the two boys since Rose will become popular. I won’t tell you more about it, otherwise it will ruin everything because you really should read this book.

Even if the writing is completly different from J.K’s, the magical universe that has rocked my childhood is still here. Nonetheless, some details bothered me  (few dead characters are back, and there are contradictions about the time-turner for instance).  Nevermind, I was so pleased that a new book was published!!

If your a fan, or if you like Harry Potter’s world, I advice you to read it.

Er ist wieder da (He came back) – Timur Vermes

Er ist wieder da is a german novel written by Timur Vermes and released in 2011. The english translation could be He came back.

It is a fictional story in which Hitler, the german despot, wake up sixty-six years after his death. Actually, it is pretty comic since there are many anachronisms especially in the beginning when the Fürher doesn’t realise what happened. For instance, he woke up in a waste ground and got angry when two kids (that he just met) didn’t do the nazi salvation. Moreover he even thinks that the website « Wikipedia » comes from the word « Wikinger » which means viking. And althought everybody recognize him, they think  that he is an actor who was chosen to play Hitler in a movie, some of them even ask what is the name of this movie.  All along the book, he faced numerous situations which will make him understand what happened.Even if Germany has changed (the country no longer shines on the Europe, country which is ruled by a woman), Hitler is dertermined to put back Germany in the straight way (where nazism and antisemitism are the main ideas). Helped by a television team, he will tried to reconquer the country which used to be his. But will he succeed? There is only one way to know : by reading the book.

In addition, the book has been sold £19.33 in reference to the year when Hitler came to power.

The book was, and still is, a success since 1,4 million copies were sold in Germany in 2014. Also, the book has been translated in 17 different languages in 2013.

I advice you this novel. I really enjoyed to read it, being a huge history fan (particularely of the totalitarian regimes) I was so pleased to find this book. It is both funny and interresting. If you don’t like (or want) to read, you can also watch the movie of the same name, released in 2015.

Jared Leto

Hello !

This time, I haven’t chosen to talk about a movie or a book…but about an actor who is also a singer, a producer and a model (that I really really really really like). And this guy is Jared Leto

Jared Joseph Leto was born on December, 26, 1971 in Louisiana. Unfortunately, his parents divorced when he was just a newborn. But shortly after, his mother married Carl Leto who gave his name to Jared and his brother Shannon. But once again, his mother divorced. However, Jared and his brother retained Carl’s last name. Jared also has a half-brother, Robert Greenwood (he filmed one of his video clip and appeared in another one.) Then, a few years later, he went to the University of the Arts in Philadephia and developed an interest for comedy. Finally, he studied cinema in the New York City School of Visual Arts.

Let’s talk about his career:

Speaking of cinema, he became famous for his role in the tv show « My So-Called Life » (which has been canceled after one season). Thereby, he played in a few famous movies like The Thin Red Line directed by Terrence Malick in 1998, in David Fincher’s Fight Club in 1999, also in Requiem for a Dream by Darren Aronofsky and Mr Nobody by Jaco Van Dormael in 2009. Finally, we will also fin him playing the Joker in Suicide Squad, this summer.

To conclude about his cinematographic career, he won many rewards, and particularly an oscar in the Best Actor in a supporting role’s category in 2014.

Now, let’s talk about his group : Thirty Secondsto Mars. It is an alternative rock band formed in 1998.  It is composed of Jared Leto (vocals and guitar), his brother Shannon Leto (drums and percussion) and of Tomo Mili?evi? (guitar). They released four albums : a first one called Thirty Seconds To Mars in 2002, then A Beautiful Lie in 2005, This Is War was the third one in 2009, and finally there was Love, Lust, Faith and Dreams in 2013. They won many rewards such as 8 MTV Europe Music Awards, 1 Billboard Music Awards… for a final result of 85 rewards on 167 nominations.

And you, what do you think about this band, and this guy? Have you ever listened this band? Do not hesitate to react about this article!

See you.

The Chronicles of Narnia, C.S Lewis (article 2)

Hey eveyrone!

So, I wanted to write an article about a novel’s saga which I really enjoyed during my childhood (okay not as much as I loved, and I still do, Harry Potter..). So here I am, presenting you an article about The Chronicles of Narnia !

This saga is made of seven books, all written between 1949 and 1954 by the famous C.S Lewis. There is an interesting fact about the writing of the books. Indeed, no one were written in the right order. For example, The Magician’s Nephew is the first book of the serie, but he was written in 1955 whereas the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, which is the second tome, was written in 1950. To continue, I’ll give you the others novel’s name, in the right order : The Horse and his Boy, Prince Caspian : The return to Narnia, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, The Silver Chair and The Last Battle.

The story takes place in  Narnia : a fictional and magic world were fantasy reigns. That is to say there are many fantastic creatures such as centaurs, witches, nymphs, fauns, giants, dwarfs, unicorns… And last but not least : there is Aslan the Lion. He is this world’s creator. All along the first novel, he will fight against the white witch who is reigning since a hundred years on Narnia. Then he will appear in all the books. Finally in the last one, he will fight against Tash, who’s consider as god for the Calormens. To conclude about Aslan, I will tell you that « Aslan » actually means « Lion » in turkish.

To finish, I will talk about the four brothers and sisters from the Pevensie family, which are kind of the main characters (with a short quotation for each one)

First, there is Peter, the older one :

"It gave him a strange feeling to see Peter as its present appearance : his face was so pale and stern and he looked much older. "( The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe , p.188 )

Then there is Susan :

" Susan could not climb higher than the second big branch . One of his legs dangling , and his foot was only a few centimeters of chattering teeth , ready to devour her... "( The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe , p.139 )

Now there is Edmund, the former villain (you probably know why if you read the books or watched the movies) :

" Aslan and Edmund were walking together in the wet grass dew , away from the rest of the courtyard. It doesn't worth to report you Aslan 's words , but it was a conversation that will Edmund never forget . "( The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe , p.147 )

Finally, there is Lucy the younger and happier one :

"But Lucy was a small very frank girl, and she knew she was right and she really could not bring herself to say that. "( The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe , p.32)

I hope you liked it. See you for the next article !

500 days of summer

Hello hello!

For my third article I’ve chosen to talk about a movie which is definitely my favourite. But I have to warn you : it is a very mushy romance.. that I absolutely enjoyed. No kidding, I’m pretty sure I already watched it at least twenty times… But I digress. It was directed by Marc Webb and released in 2009. The main actors are the gorgeous Zooey Deschanel and the awesome (also handsome…) Joseph Gordon-Levitt. This movie is, as you may have guessed, 500 days of summer. Enough talking, let me summarize it to you. I hope it will make you want to watch it!

« This is a story of boy meets girl, but you should know upfront, this is not a love story. This is a story about love. » Here is how the movie starts. And I would say that it perfectly summarize the entire movie. Indeed, Tom Hansen is a young romantic man who, to his biggest regret, works in a greeting card company. One day, he met Summer Finn, his boss’s assistant. Immediatly, he felt love at first sight. That’s when he will awkwardly try to conquer her. But unfortunately for him, Summer is not confident in love. She always refused to have a boyfriend since her parents divorced. Therefrom we will see (in disorder) the five hundred days after their meeting. Day after day, feelings will appear. Even if Tom is self confident about his own for his beloved, Summer is afraid to engage herself in a serious relation. As a consequence, she will not hesitate to slow down the things. However, Tom will keep doing his best to make Summer falling in love with him. Some days will be full of happiness and love, while others will be dark and empty.

What will happen next? How will those five hundred days end? Well, you will have to watch the movie if you want to know. And I can assure you it is not a waste of time! (only if you’re a sensitive girl? ahah.)

Moreover, I have to say that how the movie was directed (all the flashbacks, the fact that the scenes are in disorder, how we see some scenes, the actor’s play…) make the movie even better.

Please, let me know if you have already watch it or if you are going to!

Gone Girl

Hey everyone.

I’m going to talk about one of the last books I’ve read : Gone Girl. You may have already heard this title, and I think it is because the adaptation was released a few months ago. I really enjoyed to read this book. The story is really taking, and there is so much suspense. Until you have not read the last page, you cannot be sure of what happened.

Here is a little blurb :

Gone Girl is a novel written by Gillain Flynn and released on september ; 22, 2014. It tells the story of a young couple, who seem to have a wonderful and dreamed life. Effectively, Amy and Nick form a model couple. But it is only a facade… Because of Nick’s joblessness and the financial crisis, they had to leave NY. Although Amy choose to follow Nick in Missouri, she had something else behind her head. So, one day after work, Nick found out their home in a miserable state. Indeed, furnitures were overturned, windows and doors were broken, and there was blood in the floor. Moreover, he couldn’t find his wife. What would have happened to her ?

Obviously, police will consider Nick as a potential suspect, and proofs will not clear him. For his part, he will try to discover the truth. But it turned out it is not that easy.

If you also want to find the truth and make justice to Nick, do not hesitate to read the book! It’s incredible addictive, once you started to read you can’t stop, i swear aha. BUT, as much as I loved this story, I hated the end ! It’s completely impossible, this is isane. Nobody would react like that if he had lived this, I think. So yes, the way that the book ends made me really disapointed…

And if you don’t especially like to read, you can watch the movie adaptation with the same name.

But i have to inform you that the book and the movie are quite different. Especially in the end. I won’t spoil you but like i always say, it’s better to read the book first (which is decidely more complete) and then to watch the movie!

Do not hesitate to tell me if you already read the book or watched the movie, or if you’re going to !

Address Unknown by Kressmann Taylor.

I’m going to talk about a book I read and studied in middle school, but who really touched me.

Address Unknown is a novel written by Kathrine Kressmann Taylor and published in 1938. But the french edition was only released in 2002.
It is an epistolary novel who tells the story of Martin Schulze and Max Eisenstein. Both are friends and workmates : they handle an art gallery in San Francisco. One day, Martin decided to come back in Germany. But as he wanted to stay in touch with his friend and his gallery, they started a correspondence by mail. Through those letters, Max will tell Martin that he feels alone without him and Martin will answer that he feels the same, and he will describe what Germany became which he will qualify as a mess. During this time, Germany is assigned a new leader, and not least, Hitler. That’s when their relationship will be gradually deteriorate since Max is jewish unlike Martin. Martin will be more and more influenced by nazism and will not hesitate to tell Max. He will even end by considering him as a « subrace » when he will reach a new rank in Hitler’s army. Furthermore he will put an end to their correspondence and therefor to their friendship. In spite of those warnings, Max will send him a letter within he explains that he is worried because he has sent a letter to his sister, who is currently in germany, but the letter has returned with the mention « adress unknown ». Also he will ask him to make sure his sister, also jewish, is fine. Instead of reassuring him, Martin will tell him that his sister messed up by coming to his place while she was running away from the authority, so he denounced her. He added that she was probably dead at this time. As a consequence, Max will be very angry and will ask for revenge. Conscious of the censure, he will send a lot of letters to Martin, inventing him a jewish family and writting with some kind of codes to make the authority believe that he is not in Hitler’s side.

If you want to know what will happen in the end, do not hesitate to read the book!!!

I consider this book as one of my favorites. Despite a small number of pages, the story is touching and interesting. Moreover, the epistolary form changes from what we are used to read!
