But she becomes a phantom and she attends the visit of her family at her bedside. She learns that her parents are died in the accident. This story takes place in 24 hours. And in this day she must choose if live or dead. She sees her memories again and again and we discover her ordinary life with music, family and her boyfriend. Her memories are simple like everyone, we can identify with her live. She confronts with a horrible situation. Her life breaks under our eyes.

This story is beautiful, and with a great sensibility. I was affected until the end. But I don’t understand very well the end.

La Passe-miroir : Les Fiancés de l’hiver

La Passe-miroir is written by Christelle Dabos, a not very well-know French writer. This novel is a French fantasy novels who is in four volumes. In my article, I am going to talk about the first volume Les Fiancés de l’hiver. It won the first edition of the contest of the first novel youth organized by Gallimard Jeunesse.

La Passe-miroir is about a fantasy world, because the world is destroyed and there are only small islands called “arches”. In ark reigns a « family spirit », they are immortal beings who are the common ancestor of the inhabitants of the arches to whom they have transmitted powers. And the main character of this story is a young woman, her name is Ophelie, she lives in “Anima ark” and she is a “reader”, this means that she can read into objects, and thanks to that, she can know the past of these objects and to whom the objects belonged. She feels emotions and feelings. This power is rare but she has got another power that is rarer; she can cross into the mirrors. She works in a museum, where she loves work, because she likes use her “reader” power. She is an awkward, lonely and reserved character, and she lives only for her work.

But one day, her life changes, because she must marry a man whom her family has chosen for her, his name is Thorne, he comes from “The ark of the pole”. He is a cold, gruff and wicked man like his “ark”.And Ophélie must live in “ark of the pole”. She will have to adapt in a country where betrayal, wickedness and assassination attempts reigns, she must follow and obey without necessarily accepting it. And she has no family to help and no one she trusted. She can count on her powers to help herself.

I loved this novel, because it is a fantasy world that the author presents us. This is a world that is truly innovative, and there are many characters with different behaviors (whether you like them or not). It is a rich world! And the characters of Thorne and Ophelie are endearing!

The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel : The Alchemyst

The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel written by Irish author Michael  Scott. It is a specialist Mythology and folklore, he wrote a lot of science fiction, fantasy and horror books and in Ireland, he was called the « king of fantasy ». I am going to talk about the first book in this series:  The Alchemyst .

The story begins with two siblings, they are twins, the first; her name is Sophie Newman , who she works in a tearoom  and the second  his name is Josh Newman, who works in the book store, where the owner is  Nick Fleming and his wife Perry Fleming. One day while Sophie is on the phone with her friend, she sees a black limousine which stops in front of the book store where his brother works. And several men in black come out of the car to attack the owner of the bookstore. The two twins witness a supernatural power fighting between Nick Fleming and the men in black who are golems controlled by John Dee. After the fighting, Josh and Sophie discover that Nick Fleming is Nicholas Flamel the famous and historical French alchemist:

Nicolas Flamel has a reputation of an alchemist who search the philosopher’s stone and the immortality. And John went in the book store to steal  Codex, where there is Final Evocation but Josh ripped off the two pages that explains the final Evocation, so the two twins are in danger, because John Dee would like to recover them.

Along their journey the twins will discover the existence of some sort of gods call “The Elders”. Some are nice but other who are called “Dark Elder” are cruel and John Dee wants to wake up them for they control the world. Nicholas Flamel will find help with an Elder who she is the Celtic goddess of the war; Scathach and Hecate the goddess with three faces and together they will help the twins to wake up their power, because Josh and Sophie are the twins of an old legend.

I love this book because it mixes a lot of heroes or gods in different legends in the world, like Celtic or some Gods of Egypt or Prometheus and Shakespeare appears like an immortal human and he helps twins in their quest.

The Old Man and the Sea

The Old Man and the Sea is written by Ernest Hemingway, a famous American writer. He was born in 1899 and he died in 1961. At the beginning of his career he was a journalist, it is in Paris that he learns the profession of writer and after that he wrote novels. It is his second novel: The Sun also Rises that gives him success and fame. Thanks to success, he can travel and he travels a lot : in the United States, Africa, Spain, Italy and also in Cuba where is the action of his novel. The Old Man and the Sea was published in 1953 and also in 1953, The Old Man and the Sea was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.

The Old Man and the Sea is about an old man, his name is Santiago, he is a fisherman and a poor Cuban and with him, there is a young boy who accompagnies him to fishing. And this boy calls Manolin. But fishing has long been bad, and they have taken nothing for 84 days. The parents of Manolin decide that their son will embark on another boat, because they think that Santiago is too old for fishing. But Manolin will join nevertheless the old man in his shack at night to help him repair his fillets and bring him sardines for fishing. One night, the old man tells to young boy that he wants to go fishing alone and he wants to leave far in Gulf Stream, to find fish and end his bad fishing. On the 85th day, he goes fishing and he meets a giant marlin. The old man fought against the marlin for 3 days and he won. https://beamingnotes.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/Old_man_and_the_sea_Jan_Hrebicek_2013-11-1200x900.jpg

But the marlin is too big to embark in his boat and he lets it tied beside his boat in the water. Attracted by the smell of fish, sharks begins to arrive and they devour the marlin. Santiago attends the scene without being able to do anything, because he is exhausted of his fight with marlin. Finally, he returns to the port, but only with the head and the bone of the fish.

This book shows us a fighting of human against Nature, because the marlin refers to Nature. But I think that Hemingway wanted to show us that human never truly triumphs against nature, but, here, we have a entire failure but also a personal triumph, because the old man knows what it is worth. I find that story realist but at the same time it is like an epic story.

We were liars

We were liars written by E.Lockhart . She is an American writer. She writes for children’s book and young-adult novels  and adult novels. She is known for Ruby Oliver series , she begins with The Boyfriend list  and We were liars, so i’m going to do my article on this book.

The story begins with a respectable and rich family. This family is described like : ‘’ Sinclair are beautiful, blond, slender and extremely rich. Square chin, always head up and smile facade’’. The book’s protagonist is Cadence, and is her family. In this book, she talks about her summers, because her grandparents are owned a pivate island: Beechwood, where they built four houses for their three daughters and their children. One house for everyone:

She talks about before Summer Fifteen, She goes to the private island with her mother : Penny and she finds her two aunts with their children, and their cousins Mirren, Johnny, Taft, Will, Bonnie and Liberty. And Gat an Indian boy, the best friend of Johnny. Mirren, Johnny, Gat  and Cadence named  ‘’The liars’’, They’re inseparable and accomplices.

In Summer Fifteen ( Fifteen refers to Cadence’s age in the island) She falls in love with Gat, but one night Cadence is found near the beach,in water, with only underwear, and with a serious injure… Now she suffers terrible migraines and she is not able to remember much of Summer Fifteen except details of her accident…

Her mother doesn’t want to talk about Cadence’s accident and the Summer Fifteen… Cadence becomes a different person. She waits the Summer Sixteen with impatience but her father wants to go to Europe with Cadence. And she accepts, because she also fears to return to the island and see ‘’ The liars’’ who she doesn’t talk with since her accident…

But the next Summer, Summer Seventeen, She found courage to go in Beechwood ! For a month. And she wants know more about the Summer Fifteen and the cause of her accident…

This gives a very successful novel that is hard to let go once we started, because we are caught in this atmosphere a bit strange and we want to know what happens!  I like the book with mysteries and secrets and this book brings together two. And I waited impatiently the fifth part, entitled: The Truth!

Cards on the Table

Cards on the Table is a detective novel by Agatha Christie, and it was published in United Kingdom on 2 November 1936. Agatha Christie was a famous English writer and she wrote many detective novels. She created two famous characteres : Hercule Poirot a Belgian detective and Jane Marple. Agatha Christie published 66 novles, 154 short stories and 20 plays. Agatha Christie is one of the most  famous writers in the world and she is considered the most widely read author in history among the English. She is one of the innovative writers.
One of the famous characteres is Hercule Poirot, a Belgian detective, he appeared for the first time in The Mysterious Affair at Styles (1920) and it was the first novel of Agatha Christie. Hercule Poirot is conceited, full of himself and loves to be complimented. He is very careful in his investigations and respects his moral values: Justice and Truth. His favorite sentence is” my little gray cells“. His last apparition is in Curtain: Poirot’s Last Case (1975).
Cards on the Table is related the story of one of Hercule Poirot’s investigations. Mr. Shaitana, a rich man, invites eight people for diner, but he chose his guests with the precise reasons; four of their guests are crime experts including Hercule Poirot. And the others are suspected to commit a crime unpunished. But Mr. Shaitana knows the entire story and it cost him his life. During the evening they begin to play bridge, the four experts of crime in a room and the four suspecting criminals in another room with Mr. Shaitana who sits in a armchair near the fireplace. But the guests discovered Mr.Shaitana with dagger in his chest…Here how to begin the investigation for Hercule Poirot and “his little gray cells”.

This story has many film adaptions. I discovered Hercule Poirot with the TV series by ITV with David Suchet in the role of Hercule Poirot. They respect the book with some change, an example in the book we have three victims but in the serie we have two victims. I read the book after see the serie. I like the character of Hercule Poirot the conceited detective and his method to reveal the criminal:  he invites all the suspects in a room and he explains step by step his findings in his investigation and at the end, he denounces the guilty.

Cards on the Table is one of the stories of Hercule Poirot that I like, with Murder on the Orient Express but I don’t read the book, I just see the serie.

Waiting for Godot

Waiting for Godot by Samuel Beckett and was published in 1952. Samuel Beckett is an Irish author, poet and playwright.  He was a main character in the theatre called « Theatre of the Absurd ». He was born in 1906 and he died in 1989. His  literary movement is the Modernism and Nonsense. Waiting for Godot is a play of Nonsense. It is composed two acts and the original text is a translation to French, because Beckett wrote in english and in french. The first representation was in the theater of Babylone in Paris.

In Waiting for Godot, we have two mains characters : Estragon and Vladimir. They are in the countryside, near a tree. In the play, we have probably a poor stage set. The two characters are alone. They are surely longtime friends. Vladimir is the smartest than Estragon but he is too a little naive and  there is Estragon who is stupid and he is  strange. Both are Tramps. Both waited  for someone who called Godot but we understand to the end of the first act that Gadot never come and we don’t know if he exist really. There are two others characters : Pozzo and Lucky. Their relation is like master and slave. Pozzo is the master and Lucky is the slave but he is treated like an animal, because Pozzo holds him with a rope and he gives him orders like a dog. It is a strange relation between these two characters. Te four characters meet and speak but their coversation are not really logic.

For me, this play is difficult to understand, because it is Nonsense and i don’t really like that, there are no real plot or purpose. But this play is funny and the book reads quickly. I read Waiting for Godot, because we studied this book in French literature.

Johnny Got His Gun

Dalton Trumbo is an american writer, a screenwriter and a director. He wrote Johnny Got His Gun is a novel in 1939 and he made the film in 1971. This novel is the anti-militarist literature. It probably the violent, the most gross of denunciations of war.

During, a mission he was injured a serious injure by bombshell and he lost his eyes, his ears, his mouth, his nose and he was amputated , he lost his two arms and two legs. But he found a way for communicated with other people, and he tried to guess the world who round him by the alone possibility : the sensibility of his skin .

I discovered this book because we chose it with my group in TPE. I think that is a good book in the First World war. I don’t real like the theme about war, because it is always horrible and sad . And this book is horrible and sad but I know just point of view of french people but I don’t know about german people or american people or other. But I don’t read this book again but we must know it.

Romeo and Juliet

Romeo and Juliet is undoubtedly one of the most famous works of English literature, written by playwright William Shakespeare in 16th century. Romeo and Juliet were already two characters that existed; they are appeared with Luigi da Porta, Masuccio of Novellino and Matteo Bandello. But it’s the play of Shakespeare that made Romeo and Juliet two famous characteres in all over the world. Romeo and Juliet appeared in 1597. It’s a romantic-tragedy, a drama in five acts.
The story takes places in Verona, it’s an old town in Italy. The story relates about two feuding families in Verona : Montague and Capulet. They were always in conflicts for the distant and forgotten reasons. Their conflicts In this famillies, they’re two young people : Romeo, a young man of 16 years old, he naive man, he is describ like night , solitary and cold. On the other side : Juliet, a young woman of 14 years old, she is too naive and pure woman, she is describ by Romeo like day, like a sun, bright and wonderful. The two characters fall in love and they brave their famillies and they loved until the death.
It’s a beautiful story of love and tragedy. They are naive, because they are young and they believe in  their love until the death and this love is so pure. But we feel all along the story, the presence of the death who turn around of the couple and we know the end from the beginning.
It’s a universal story about love, death and about human nature.
