Hi guys!

So today I’ll talk about a movie that I’ve watched recently and who’s stucked in my mind ever since that day: EX_MACHINA.

EX_MACHINA is a psychological, science fiction thriller written and directed by Alex Garland in 2015. This movie won the 88th Academy Award for Best Visual Effects and  has been recognized as one of the ten best independent movies of the year. EX_MACHINA won many awards, overall 20 awards.

This science fiction movie deals with AI, technology progress and their human sides. There’s tree main characters: Ava the AI, Nathan Bateman who is Ava’s creator and the CEO of a successful software compagny (Blue Book) and Caleb Smith, a very skilled Programmer who works for this compagny.

EX_MACHINA is composed of 6 sessions with Ava, which is a very original concept, and every sessions shows us more of Ava’s capacity as a AI and reveals more of her human side too, Ava is really impressive and really looks like a real woman with her facial expressions. The main thing who remind us that she’s a humanoid robot is their robotic parts.

The plot start with Caleb, who won a one-week visit to the isolated but very luxurious home of Nathan. The CEO of Blue Book seems to be very discreet and secretive since he has been working on a futuristic project for few years. At first Caleb thinks he won this contest only for a little break from work, but in fact Nathan tells him that he has been working on a project (Ava) for a long time and needs someone to judge if Ava is genuinely capable of thought and consciousness and if he can relate to it despite the fact that he knows that it’s an artificial robot. More the sessions goes and more Caleb is truly fascinated and attracted to Ava (maybe a bit too much), just like us he’s fooled by Ava’s intelligence.

Nathan’s home is really huge, modern and is based on futuristc houses, every doors are controled by robotic assistances. Nathan gave a card to Caleb which is only able to open his room, nothing else. This element add to Nathan’s mysterious side who can be really nice with his guest when he want to but also very distant…

Ok so I won’t talk more about it because I truly think it’s a great movie and that you guys really should watch it and judge it all by yourself. The thrill is really present and the visual effects are incredibly well made I was amazed by all the work put in it. Normally science fiction movies aren’t my thing, but I think this  movie is an exception. I REALLY advise you to watch it, I think you won’t be desappointed! 😉

Here’s the trailer in case you want to know more about it, but I honestly don’t advise you to watch it entirely if you want to see this movie because I think it spoil the entire story which is really too bad.

The Last Guardian

Hello guys, so today I won’t talk about a book, movie or song but about an incredible video game: The Last Guardian. Yes you heard me well, The Last Guardian is FINALLY out after all the looooooong wait!! 😀

The Last Guardian is a PS4 action-adventure video-game created by Fumito Ueda and developed by the Team Ico, a Japanese video game development team who has also developed the famous video game Shadow of the Colossus. I won’t talk about the whole story because I didn’t had the chance to play it myself, but I’ve watched the beginning on Jacksepticeye‘s channel (who is my favorite youtuber ever by the way ? ) but I still can talk about the plot that I know so far.

The game is based on a fashback narrative told by an old man recounting his experience as a young boy meeting a giant feathered creature named Trico who looks a lot like a griffin. This mystical creature is a mix between a cat/dog (the gesture), a bird (the wings, the feathers and the legs). The name of the creature probably came from the japanese words «  »tori no ko » which means « baby bird » in english or from the words « tori » and « neko » which means « bird » and « cat« . Trico is kind of magical since he can shoot electric lasers from his tail and he also have kind of small turquoise horns which appear to be very special and his eyes change color.

Here are some a sketchs of Trico: ( Thanks to ©2010-2016 SammyTorre)

The game start with a mysterious cinematic in which we can see an artifact half-buried in the ground, we can also hear children’s laughter and then a shadow who seems to be the little boy’s shadow appears on the artifact and it seems that the shadow has noticed the mysterious objet.

Then, the player can control the little boy who don’t speak english and whose name is unknown. The boy has been kidnapped « under mysterious circumstances » and taken to a huge ancient castle (yes there’s many mysterious things in this game, that’s probably why I already love it).

« I awoke to find myself in a strange cave. »

The little boy wakes up next to Trico:

« I noticed with a start I was not alone. Beside me lay a great man-eating beast « Trico. »

He also wakes up to find tatoos on his body that he didn’t have before being kidnapped:

« I did not know how, why or when it had happened, but my skin was covered with peculiar markings.«

There’s a lot of questions left for the player, questions that need to be answered. The gameplay focuses on the relationship between the boy and the mystical creature. At first, Trico is very distrustful and aggressive towards us, but since we feed and help him (Trico is injured because of the spears stuck into his thighs), we end up to tame the creature. The player can also call Trico, it’s a way for the two main protagonists to understand eachother. This is how we gain Trico’s trust through the story.

So far, I really love this video-game, the graphics are gorgeous, the music fits very well with the environment, Trico’s design and gesture are incredibly well made and I also love the connection between the little boy and Trico which are, according to me, a great and unique way of communication.

Here’s the trailer enjoy! 😉

The Shining is an psychological, horror novel wrote by the great american novelist, director and scriptwriter Stephen King and published in 1977. This is his third published novel. This horror novel deals with family issues, alcoholism and the madness that hold the Overlook hotel.

There’s three main characters; Jack Torrance who’s a very complicated man in Family crisis with driking problems. His wife, Wendy Torrance is deeply in love with her husband, she’s blond, pretty and she’s very confident. Their son, Danny aged of five is quite special because he have the Shining gift which is a extremely strong power. Danny isn’t the only one having this power, Dick Hallorann, the cook of the Overlook hotel also possesses it.

However the movie and the novel are different. In the movie, Kubrick added a maze in order to symbolise a parallel with the hotel. There’s two endings, the one from the novel in which the possesses hotel explodes, and the one from the movie where Jack dies frosted in the snowy maze of the Overlook.

The Shining has been adaptated into a horror movie by the famous Stanley Kubrick,  an american director, scenarist and photographer. Kubrick’s adaptation hasn’t been greatly appreciated by Stephen King, according to him this movies doesn’t deal enough with the alcoholism and the breakdown family.

  • Some effect in the pop culture:

–  In the video clip of the song The Kill, the band Twenty Seconds to Mars has   been greatly inspired by the movie The Shining with the hotel, the madness, the twins, the bar, the typewriter…

Afficher l'image d'origine–  In the movie Finding Nemo a Disney movie, when Bruce the shark is chasing Dory and Marin  in the submarine, when Bruce is breaking the door and sticks his head into it he says: « Here’s Brucy! » This scene is a reference to the « Here’s Jhonny! » when Jack is chasing his wife.

– The animated sitcom The Simpsons has done many winks to the movie, one of the most best reference is in the episode entiltled Treehousse of Horror V  the first part « The Shining » is completely a parody of the whole movie. In this episode, Homer try to kill his family in the hotel that he’s guarding for Mr Burns same as Jack who is also trying to his family as well.

– In the episodic video game Life is Strange, when whe enter into the girls dorm of Blackwell academy, whe can see the word « REDRUM » (which means MURDER backwards) wrote on a slate. This is a reference when the little Jhonny write this with a lipstick.

If you haven’t watched this scene yet, I definately advice you to do it now because that’s one of the most cult scene in all the horror movies history.

Oh and of course Happy Halloween!!

The Kid

The kid is an american silent comedy-drama released in 1921, directed, produced and written by Charlie Chaplin. This is the first Charlie Chaplin’s movie, and The Kid is  considered as one of the greatest movies of the silent area.

The story take place in the twenties and deals with poverty during those years. The two main characters are a glazier tramp interpreted by Charlie Chaplin and a kid played by Jackie Coogan.  The story beggin with a woman (interpreted by Edna Purviance) carrying her newborn while she’s leaving a charity hospital. The mother abandon her son and put him in the back of the seat of an expensive car with an note asking to the person who will that note to take care of the baby. Unfortunately, the car is stolen and as soon as the two robbers find the baby since he was crying, they abandon him in the street next to the garbages. By walking the streets, the Tramp (glazier) will find the baby, at first he doesn’t want that responsability, but he changed his mind because he ended up to like this kid as his own son and decided to raise the boy (despite the hard living conditions at that time) and called him John. Five years later, the kid and the Tramp will work as a team with John trowing stones in order to break windows so the Tramp working as glazier can fix them. They will live several short adventures but unfortunately, social services will interrupt them. Then, the mother at the begging who abandoned John becamed rich and will try by all means to find her child.

I really liked because of the link between the two protagonists it shows the solidarity between them which is really well represented.

Zootopia

Image

Hi everyone! 😀
So I’ve recently watched the latest Disney movie which name is Zootopia. I think that it’s now one of my favorite animated movies ? so I’ve decided to write an article about it because I think that it could be interesting.

Zootopia is an excellent animated movie realized by Byron Howard, Rich Moore and Jared Bush There’s a lot of references of our  society (like the technology (the logo of Apple wich is a carrot for exemple 😉 ), racism, the slowness of the administration and so on…) There’s also many famous film references like: « The Godfather » , with the moles (funny moments by the way 😉 ), the « Attack of the 50 Foot Woman« , with Judy at the tiny town… And the thing which is really funny is that animals in this movie look like true humans, which is kinda surprising (in the good way of course.)

So the story is about Judy Hopps which is a rabbit who wish to become the first rabbit officer in the department police of Zootopia city. Judy’s boss underestimate her, so she’ll prove him her value. She’ll meet Nick Wilde, a cunning fox who will help her to solve a kidnapping case (because Judy balckmailed him so he was forced to help her). I really love this duo they’re just Awesome!! 😀

I won’t tell you more about the plot, because I don’t want to spoil you guys.       I really advice you to watch it, it totally worth it trust me 😉 + they’re alot of funny moments like the one with the sloth Flash (whose name is clearly ironic hahaha ) I hope you’ll see it by yourself.

Here’s the trailer, I hope you’ll watch this fantastic movie, ENJOY! 😀

Red Right Hand

Red Right Hand is a song interpreted by Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds, an Australian alternative rock band, in their album « Let Love In » this song was released in 1994. The title is a reference to Paradise Lost, a epic poem written by John Milton, « Red Right Hand » is a quote from this poem it says:

«  In my house he wrote « His red right hand ».«

In the poem, it refers to the vengeful hand of God. The meaning of this song isn’t totally clear, some people will say that it refers to the political life, others say that it refers to a crime and some others to the Devil.                                                                                                                 And you, what do you think about it?

Here’s the lyrics:

Take a little walk to the edge of town
and go across the tracks
Where the viaduct looms,
like a bird of doom
As it shifts and cracks
Where secrets lie in the border fires,
in the humming wires
Hey man, you know
you’re never coming back
Past the square, past the bridge,
past the mills, past the stacks
On a gathering storm comes
a tall handsome man
in a dusty black coat with
a red right hand

He’ll wrap you in his arms,
tell you that you’ve been a good boy
He’ll rekindle all the dreams
it took you a lifetime to destroy
He’ll reach deep into the hole,
heal your shrinking soul,
but there won’t be a single thing
that you can do
He’s a god, he’s a man,
he’s a ghost, he’s a guru
They’re whispering his name
through this disappearing land
But hidden in his coat
is a red right hand

You don’t have no money?
He’ll get you some
You don’t have no car?
He’ll get you one
You don’t have no self-respect,
you feel like an insect
Well don’t you worry buddy,
’cause here he comes
Through the ghettos and the barrio
and the bowery and the slum
A shadow is cast wherever he stands
Stacks of green paper in his
red right hand

You’ll see him in your nightmares,
you’ll see him in your dreams
He’ll appear out of nowhere but
he ain’t what he seems
You’ll see him in your head,
on the TV screen
And hey buddy, I’m warning
you to turn it off
He’s a ghost, he’s a god,
he’s a man, he’s a guru
You’re one microscopic cog
in his catastrophic plan
Designed and directed by
his red right hand

Some facts about this song:
« Red Right Hand » have been used many time in the popular culture:
– In cinema with the movie Peaky Blinders (2013), in Scream 1 & 2 (in fact, Nick Cave recorded another version of as « Red Right Hand 2 » for Scream 3.)
-« Red Right Hand have also been recorded by Arctic Monkeys an English indie rock band , there’s another version covered by PJ Harvey and some others artists.

It’s been not very long that I discovered this song, but the first time that I heard it, I immediatly love it ? it’s maybe because it’s quite mysterious…

Here’s the link of the song, enjoy! 😉

A Christmas Carol

A Christmas Carol is an american movie in 3D released in 2009, realized by Robert Zemeckis & produced by Walt Disney Pictures.
It’s one of the numerous adaptation of A Christmas Carol, a english novela wrote by Charles Dickens in 1843. The history takes place during the Christmas season, the main character is an old man very stingy and misanthrope named Ebenezer Scrooge, who at the beginning of the movie, is an unsympathetic character. Scrooge is the opposite of generosity, he doesn’t know charity, has a heart of stone, and most of all: he HATE Christmas!
To make him aware of his behavior, three ghosts come to visit him during Christmas Eve: the Ghost of Christmas Past, the Ghost of Christmas Present, and the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come. The third Spirit take Scrooge to a gloomy walk to Bob Cratchit’s house (the underpaid clerk of Scrooge, and the symbol of the poor working conditions and especially long working hours. ) where the family cry the little Tiny who just died because the family was too poor. Scrooge realize that the child is dead because of him, but then, the Spirit leads him to a cemetery where he discovered his own grave with, written in large black letters, the name « EBENEZER SCROOGE« .

http://www.marcgabbana.com/upload/img/354_0080-Graveyard-Scrooge.jpg

Scrooge weeps over his own grave, beg the spirit for a chance to change his ways, before Christmas morning. At the end, the old man wakes up on Christmas morning, he changed his behavior and becamed a model of generosity and kindness.

I really love this novela, because it can be creepy & wonderful at the same time, and the moral is just beautiful.

The Extraordinary trip of the fakir who was remained stuck in an Ikea closet

Image

The Extraordinary trip of the fakir who was remained stuck in an Ikea closet is a novel of Romain Puértolas, a French writer. The main character of this novel is a fakir named Ajatashatru Lavash Patel, who, at the beginning of the novel, is a mountebank. The fakir wich is found stuck in a closet (Ikea), travel around the world: First of all in France, in England, in Spain, in Italy, and in Libya. During these many travels (in a short time), he meet many people like African immigrants in a truck, a famous French actress in Italy, or even Marie a woman that he met in the Ikea’s cafeteria (which he fell in love ? ).

I love this novel of Puértolas, because it’s pretty simple to read, it’s recent (the novel was published in 2013), and it’s full of short movies/ TV references like the show « Pékin Express », or even « Harry Potter »… The language may be familiar sometimes, and some passages don’t lack of humor. I strongly advise this book for all those who love amazing stories. 😉

The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde

Image

The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde is a famous novel written by Robert Louis Stevenson in 1886. The story is about Dr Jekyll who is a nice man, very appreciate of everyone, great friend of Mr Utterson (a london notary), and Mr Hyde, a monstrous man, with a scary and repulsive face.
In this novel full of suspense, Mr Hyde is the double personality of Dr Jekyll who created a drug to separate his good side of his bad side. But it didn’t work and night after night it’s Hyde who takes over.

I love the stories with suspense and when a character have a dark side, so I really love the plot!

The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde also been adapted in cinema, in theater, on TV, in comics, in songs and into video games.

Fahrenheit 451 is a science fiction novel written by Ray Bradbury (who is an American writter) and published in 1953. This novel is in fact a dystopian novel. It’s strange because ,here, the firemen doesn’t put out the fire, but they light up. The main character is Guy Montag a firefighter which has books, although it’s forbidden by the Law. In this book, the population is only distracted by watching TV, or driving their cars at full speed. But despite these distractions, we understand that people don’t feel well; they attempt suicide, but they don’t remember it.
