I recently watched this movie (yesterday) and I’m still shocked by the incredible plot !
Don’t worry I’ll not spoil the story but I’ll try to explain in the better way…
The narrator and main character (Edward Norton) is a man who live alone, sleep alone in spite of his numerous insomnia, who work alone, eat alone just like a lot of people in the world. After participating in several anonymous meeting to help peolple who suffre from a cancer, a tuberculosis or others serious diseases, he finally meets Tyler (Brad Pitt): a handsome man, clever, beautiful, nonconformist and rebel. Thanks to him he will learn to live instead of just exist as a pawn of the society. They will creat the « Fitgh Club » an illegal club of boxing.
But at a moment, this odd association will turn into a kind of terrorist activities…
Until which point this story will ended ?
I really advise you to watch this movie, the film technics are just incredibly amazing and the actors play in a way I never seen before. David Fincher is definitly a God of cinema for my opinion !
As we are studying the notion of Travelling, Initiatory Journey and Exile in class, I decided to talk about a book I read recently.
It’s a book entitled Galveston, written by Nic Pizzolatto (famous writer and scriptwriter, in particular for the serie True Detective). The book deals with a man, called Roy Cady, a texan « gangster » who kills people on the request of his boss. One day he felt in a trap with a fellow and he succeed to stay alive. Unfortunately a girl was on the crime scene, so he has to keep her with him and they decided to go away from the town and hit the road until Galveston, Roy’s hometown. On the road, the girl, called Rocky wants to take with them her little sister, Tiffany. They finally arrive at Galveston, but the story isn’t ended.
It’s an interested book because the story is told by a past point of view and also by a present one. In that way it emphasizes the suspence of the plot and it gives a deep dimension to the story. During this road-trip we discover Lousiana and Texas, two wonderful states, amazing landscapes and interesting way of life, so different from ours.
I advise you to read it because the writing style is almost easy and descriptions of landscapes make me dream a lots.
Good reading !
PS: The serie is also amazing and I really advise you to watch it right now, it permits to stpe back about our society and our way of life. The actors are just perfect and the plot is so suspenceful ! 😀 Enjoy
On saturday night I went to the cinema, I watched ’71 by Yann Demande. It deals with the war between Ireland and England. I didn’t know a thing about this war, except that it was hard (like any wars in fact …) So I asked Nicolas M and now I know a lot of things, but what ever, it’s not the subject.
So the story takes place in Belfast in 1971. The main character, Gary Hook, a young english soldier is send to the front on Belfast. Attacks and violence spread terror in the city and children waged war too. During a mission, Gary is abandonned by his team and he was alone and without any help. He will have to come back in his military base.
I was attracted by this movie because there were a lot of good press critics, they said that the movie switched into a thriller. In that way, I was amazed by several shoot: When Gary is chase by Irish man throughtout houses, we follow him as if we were running with him. Morevover the lights are very present and use in differents way: the sunset, the risesun, the lights of the city, the fire… It symbolises a kind of hope in the middle of war. I also noticed esthetism and I found that the director shoots well and actors play with such credibility whici is very rare at that time !
I advise you to watch it, except if you have a sensitive soul !
There are several adaptations of the famous adventures of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, written by Arthur Conan Doyle and first appeared in 1854. A movie directed by Guy Ritchie with Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law in 2009, the second film by the same director and with the same actors en 2011. But there are also two TV show I know: « Sherlock » and « Elementary ».
I’m going to talk about the last one, which the season 2 begins tonight (05/12/14).
First the story takes place in New York. Sherlock arrives in the city after being hospitalized in a rehab facility. In fact, Sherlock Holmes is an english inspector who worked for Scottland Yard and who has overcame a hard obstacle during in career in London… His girlfrien has been killed by a famous serial killer called « Moriarty ». So he’s in reintegration into society and he quickly becomes consultant for the NYPD. He has a « sober companion », Joan Watson who helps him to fight against alcoholism and his drug addiction. The duet have to live together because of some reasons of security and they start to be an efficient detective couple !
I ‘m crazy about this serie because I really like the characters: they don’t fit with the stereotype of detective such as « The Expert », they are more human and real but they have a kind of attraction which makes the audience more fascinated. Moreover, the atmosphere is dark thanks to the setting: the house of Sherlock is just wonderful and looks like an old house of the 19th century ! And the insvestigations are very complex, I try each time to solve it before Sherlock… but I fail.
I advice you to watch it, it’s a different atmosphere than the other us series that you could know. (But if I can give you an advice, watch the season 1 before begining the season 2, otherwise you will be completely lost !!)
I would like to talk about a suject I’m crazy about. The journey. The journey is a way to escape from reality and discover a new way of life. We can just go for a while, such as during our holidays, or all year long. It’s a mean to search oneself and to learn more about our society and other isolated society. I particularly apreciate the road-trip because I hit the road all day and stop when I want, eat where I want and sleep in my car, meet people and talk with them, in fact it’s the perfection of freedom. One day I would like to make a road-trip, with my friend, during a year, through the USA.
Maybe I’m inspired by the famous writer of 50’s, Jack Kerouac. He wrote the book « On The Road » and some others like « The Dharma Bums », « Big Sur », « The Town and the City »… He made part of the Beat Generation which is an artistic movement of the 1950’s. They all travelled around the USA and in Mexico too. They were born during the age of the rock’n’roll and also listened a lot of jazz music. All their works of art are rythmed by music and journeys. In fact they all created some books, poems, musics to share their point of view of the begining of the consumer society. Moreover, Jack Kerouac has travelled to search himself and make his own vision of life, love, freindship and family.
I advise you to read « On the Road » and to read also Allen Ginsberg, a famous poet and friend of Jack Kerouac. There is an adaptation of On the Road by Walter Salles, it’s a good movie, enjoy it ! 🙂
I read this novel in original version. It’s very interesting to read in english and I advise you to do it. First because you understand much more than you can think and secondly because you learn other grammatical structure or words and it’s very enriching.
This is the story of Benjamin Button who was born old. Instead of growing old with the time he rejuvenizes. So it’s difficult for him to have a normal life with friends of his age or love story with a younger girl than him. He is ahead of his age and he doesn’t have the same ideas than his close friends. This story is very strange because when he is a young boy, he looks like a old one and he has the attitude of an adult and when he become an adult, he looks more and more young and he is also younger in his mind. It’s very paradoxal !
So I advise you to read it and also to watch the adaptation of David Fincher with (the wonderful) Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett. It’s a good movie to question ourselves about the time which spend very fast and our evolution through time.
The Great Gatsby directed by Baz Luhrmann in 2013 is one of my favourite movie. With Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Carey Mulligan, Joel Edgerton and Isla Fisher.
It's the story of a rich man living on West Egg during the Roaring Twenties. The movie is punctuated of excessive parties, secrets about the past and a love relation between Gatsby and Daisy. All the movie is told by Nick Carraway, Gatsby's neightbour and friend.
I'm crazy about this movie because it shows a different way of life than ours, like the Speakeasies, the Flappers, Prohibition, Golden Age of Jazz etc... The setting and the costume design are amazing, actors' playing are wonderful and my fascination about the Roaring Twenties increased after I watched this movie ( in fact I think I watched five times... ) Moreover the aestheticism and the film technics are great and numerous.
I advise you to watch it !!!
Yesterday I went to the cinema and I watched Divergente directed by Neil Burger. It’s an adaptation from the teen’s saga Divergent written by Veronica Roth.
The movie takes place in a post-apocalyptic Chicago. After a devastating war, the Government divided the society in five factions: Abnegation (Altruistes) for the selfless; Amity (Fraternels) for the peaceful; Candor (Sincères) for the honest; Dauntless (Audacieux) for the brave and Erudites (Érudits) for the intelligent. Each years, all the teenagers who’s got sixteen have an aptitude test which determined the faction which they are best suited. After that, they decide to stay in their family’s faction or to transfer to anoter faction. This choice is definitive.
Beatrice Prior, a sixteen-year-old Abnegation has her test, it reveals that Beatrice is indicated for three factions: Abnegation, Erudites and Dauntless. In fact, she is a rare person called Divergent. Unfortunatelly this kind of people are pursued by the Government because they are uncontrollables. Beatrice chose Dauntless and changed her name for Tris. How will she do to hide her secret and moreover, to stay in life ?
The movie is amazing. It fits greatly with the novel, every characters are respected and every actors plays perfectly. There are a lots of enlighted shots and a beautiful atmosphere based on lights and shadows. Moreover, it is a good critic of the tomorrow society.
I advise you to watch it realy fast !!
Yesterday, I saw Shutter Island, even if it doesn’t correspond to a unit of our lessons, I want to talk about it.
First the story: In 1954, Teddy Daniels, a marshall of Boston, and his new partner, Chuck Aule, travel to Ashecliff Hospital for the criminally insane. They were investigated for the disapearance of a patien, Rachel Solando who had drowning her three children. Teddy and Chuck will be dragged in a strange plot and they will break the law of Ashecliff Hospital. But all along the story, Teddy turns into insane and he loses his partner… I don’t want to tell you the end, it’s so incredible !
Then my opinion: It’s amazing the way Martin Scorsese shake you. Since the begening until the end you are attrated by the atmosphere and above all, the play of Leonardo DiCaprio. All seems to be a secret or a clue. You are trapped into a vicious circle where everything appear as a lie but also as the truth. The end lets you in a feeling of incomprehension, you don’t realy know if the story is real or not.
It’s definitly one of the best thriller I have seen, I advise you to watch it !
I have read a saga, during 4 years entitled Beautiful Creatures (16 Lunes in french).
This saga belongs to the southern gothic genre. This genre was born in United States of America, more exactly in the south. It’s another genre of fantasy but with some elements of gothic genre. In fact there is a plot all along the novel, punctated by supernatural, oniric or unusual events. Grotesque situations, places or characters are present a lots.
Beautiful Creatures written by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl and published in 2010, tell the story of Ethan, a teenager who lives in Gatlin, a little village of South Carolina. One day a new young girl, called Lena, settles in this village and Ethan falls in love with her. But Lena hides a terrible secrets, and her family too, there are Casters (Enchanteresse) and they have special powers. Ethan, Lena and lots of other characters are dragged in a war between Light Casters and Dark Casters, but humans can be hurt too !
I adore this saga and I read all the four books, I advise you to read it if you like fantasy !
But don’t watch the adaptation, there is very bad and doesn’t look like the novel !
I would talk about a movie that I particularly adore. This is Snow White and the Hunstman directed by Rupert Sanders, with Kirsten Stewart (Twilight), Chris Hemsworth (Thor) and Charlize Theron (Dior). It is the adaptation from the tail Snow White written by Grimm brother. I find this movie well directed, there are a dark atmosphere all along and some touch of poesy when the Snow White is close to the nature. The dwarves bring a humorous side and the love story between the Hunstman and Snow White stay subjective so it break the stereotype of the Prince Charming.
As Kristen Stewart said in an interview of the magazine Première « …we took the tail and we underlined from black the line that Disney had colored before… » I am agree with this, the Queen appears realy vicious and horrible, Snow White seems to be more emancipated and robust and on the opposite of the tail, the Hunstman has a heart and feelings.
The film technics made by computer are still necesary to see what the director has in his head. It permits again to enter in the kingdom of Rupert Sanders and to settle the story in a faraway area and in an dark atmosphere.
I advise you to watch this movie !!!
The Beauty and the Beast, released recently, is a french movie, directed by Christophe Gans. The story is faithful to the tail written by Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont in 1755. It is directed with lots of poesy and lyrisism.
The naration sat between: a woman telling the story to her children, the love story of the Beauty and the Beast and Belle’s dreams when she was emprisoned in Beatst’s castle.
The movie is also punctuated of wonderful elements and of divine interventions. Several times, the Beast uses magic powers and all around the castle, the presence of fairies (which look like fireflies) and of goddesses of the wood, give a fabulous and imaginary sides to the movie.
Something that suprised me a lot in this film: to create a complet entry in the story, the director had chosen to shoot lots of scene on green sets and to use modern technics on computer.
Even if many people consider this technic as a cheating. I find it used with ingenuity and it permits to travel in another faraway area and also in another universe, more poetic and wonderful than our universe.
The result is mind-boggling, equally thanks to the acting of the two main actors, Lea Seydoux (La vie d’Adèle chap.1&2) and Vincent Cassel (Le parrain). In spite of a silly story and a elevated language of the 16th century, they success to carry us away in this beautiful love story betwenn a young woman and a monster.
In all the work we saw in class, I prefer The Hobbit, written by Tolkien. I appreciate fantasy and
the world he created for his story is in rich in magic places, surnatural characters and incredible events.
In my opinion it’s a great representation of fantasy, as Harry Potter, written by J.K. Rowling, or The Lord of the Ring, written by Tolkien too. The descriptions of the differents places are complete and we see the scene as if we were.
I’m interested in the way he decribes Bilbo. I like the idea that an anti-hero becomes with the time an hero.
The epic story is ones style of writting I adore, and I would like to read all the book.
