During a Monday’s sunny morning our school trip occurred in boulbinet port, we have learnt a lot of things about sustainable fishing. And we promise, it’s very interesting!

First, we have met an old fisherman who spent his entire life here, since approximately the death of the Guinean president Sékou Touré in 1984. He said that he was forced to do this job because it was his brother’s one. We were asking him if he likes it, he answered yes even if it was his only option to feed his big family (he actually has 8 children and 3 wives!) because his salary is widely enough: about 300.000 GNF per day. Then, he talks to us about the fact that there’s solidarity and generosity between the fishermen around him, they even call him »papa ».

He works the whole day, from 7AM until 6PM; he goes first at sea, in his canoe to fish then he returns to the port knitting the fishing net with his mates until the end of the day.

The fish that they gather is sold to the women in the big market of the port.

Foulematou Camara is one of them. This generous lady sells red carps, and barracudas for 100.000 GNF a fish. Her business is very thriving: she sells 20 fish and wins 200.000 GNF per day. She said that she’s forced to do this job, she has 6 children who are looked after by her sister, and her husband is a driver. The place where she works is free, she actually doesn’t have to pay it.
