Document 1 & 2: extracts from Idiocracy, directed by Mike Judge (2006)

Recap

Idiocracy is a movie based on the premise (= postulat/hypothèse) that, in a distant future, the earth will only be inhabited by people with low IQs.

Extract 2 introduces a man who took part in a military experiment and wakes up in the future. The world has turned into a giant garbage dump (= décharge) as people stopped recycling and their lives revolve around TV, junk food….

Technology has made life so easy for people that they rely too much on it and have become lazy. They have stopped using their brains and the human race has regressed: they are selfish, aggressive and have no manners whatsoever.

How to express cause and effect (=consequence)

  • Expressing cause

because / since / as / for + Clause (= proposition)

e.g: The world has turned into a giant garbage dump as people stopped recycling

because of / owing to / due to + Noun

e.g: Due to the advance in technology, people have become lazy

  • Expressing consequence

consequently / as a consequence / as a result / that’s why / therefore (=for that reason) / thus / so / hence (d’où)

e.g : People stopped recycling, hence the ground littered (= covered) with garbage/trash (= déchets)

so……..that

e.g : Technology has made life so easy for people that they rely too much on it

You can also use the following verbs to express cause and effect:

lead to = mener à

trigger = déclencher

cause / provovoke = causer, provoquer

 

You can also use IF-Clauses type 1:

If we stop recycling, the planet will turn into a giant garbage dump

Activity 2: Idiocracy, follow-up

1/ How can you account for (= explain) the evolution of the human race in those documents?

a. Think of SPECIFIC reasons why, according to the documents, the human race has been regressing.. You can also watch the video clip of the song Evolution, by Korn which supports the same theory as Idiocracy.

b. React to the documents. Do you agree with the message conveyed in Idiocracy and Evolution? Why? Why not? (Try to vary the expressions to express opinion/ agreement/disagreement)
