A famous Irish song
The ballad Molly Malone also known as Cockles and Mussels tells the story of a Dublin woman named Molly Malone, an attractive fishmonger who sold cockles and mussels from her barrow which she wheeled through the streets of Dublin city. The ballad tells how the woman died of a fever and now her ghost haunts the city streets. The popular song is a sort of unofficial anthem of Dublin city. The song’s tragic heroine Molly Malone and her barrow is today one of the most familiar symbols of the capital.
The statue of Molly Malone stands on Suffolk Street, next to the famous Grafton Street. Molly Malone worked as a fishmonger. She died of Cholera, a diseaes that regularly struck the city of Dublin. There is no evidence to suggest that Molly was a real person. Countless people, including academics and genealogists, tried to find proof of her existence. But they didn’t find anything…
