The Enhanced Human, final task

Mission: Participate in an ethics group

You are going to be part of an ethics discussion group, working on a hot topic of the moment:

1. Bionic humans (cyborgs — implants — brain stimulation — transformation )

2. Gene editing (stem cell research — saviour siblings — transplants)

3. Genetic selection (designer babies — eugenics — perfection)

4. Cloning (genes — doubles — identical — identity)

5. The enhanced human (cyborgs — micro-/nano-chip implants — genetically modified humans — control)

Write a collaborative essay for an ethics discussion group, which you will post to a blog.

Individually, leave comments on topics you will choose.

cloning

What can cloning bring to the society ?

Cloning is a reproduction of human, it’s possible to do that with cells and genes.  The question is : To what extent does cloning bring something to society ? We gonna see an situation with their advantages and disadvantages.

If a woman can’t have a baby with science, it’s possible for her to conceive her baby even on her own.  To do  this project we can use and take cells and genes from woman. This project has advantages, it’s an advance for woman like her because nature doesn’t allow them to give birth to a baby but science can produce a clone of this woman. It is like having her own child.  On the other hand, this project has disadvantage, the baby won’t have a personal identity. It will only be her clone.

Imagine couple had a car accident and they died. The parents of the couple decide to clone their child with their cells and genes. But it’s better for parents because they were very sad of their death. And it’s that very strange because life is a chronology it’s born to live to die.

Cloning is a big step forward in the world of science, but it can cause a lot of disintegration because it does not respect the cycle of life and can shock people. For me us, cloning is really a solution that I will never use because it can bring to the surface many memories that have hurt. So cloning brings to society the means of being imortal bit also of going beyond reality.

Bionic Humans

Bionic human it’s a system to change the faulty parts of the human body to put bionic body parts. People will talk about this today because it’s medical progress and it helps disabled people.

What is the impact on our socity ?

Advantages exist to bionic human,

it’s a big advance for our future. It helps disabled people and it can change their lives. It could help people to continue their activities ( sport and sky… ). For example Amanda Boxtel she transplanted exoskeleton to practice her activities ( running, walk… ). The risk of rejects is reduced and the prosthesis is discreet. More it’s a psychological amelioration.

But drawbacks still are present,

it costs a lot of money. Only rich people can buy bionic body part, they can use that to make money cell it to rich people. It may be dangerous and it’s difficult to use that. The cost of research and development is a also a problem for our society because it’s too expensive. They must change their body every time and that can scare because people are not ready to take off a parts of their body and particularly inside organ such as heart, eyes, kidneys.

This technologies can help a lot of people ( disabled people) but it cots a lot of money so only rich person can buy this.

Gene editing

Gene editing is the insertion of DNA in the genome of an organism or cell. It is usually used for children who have diseases. Their parents decide to give birth to a new child. The child who has diseases can be saved by stem cells transplanted from the umbilical cord of his/her new brother or sister.

We will see together what advantages and drawbacks can have gene editing.

Gene editing can save children who are dying days after days or for children who have diseases. For example, Jayson and Michelle Whitaker got a child who suffered of an extremely rare genetic condition and got a disease. His parents decided to give birth to a new child, borned by IVF specifically to provide a tissue match. This procedure saved the life of the sick children and now he can live like a normal person. This operation will give smile again to the children who suffered from diseases and their parents.

But gene editing is not full of advantages. This process isn’t safe because it is not practiced very much and it is banned in Germany and United Kingdom. It can have some mistakes and it can kill the patient during this procedure. The second baby born could think that he is alive just to save his/her brother or sister sick. He could think that he is less loved than his brother/sister and that he his a savior-sibling. Maybe he will grow with inferiority complex in comparison to the sick children.

To conclude, gene editing have advantages and drawbacks but our group is for this process because it can save the life of sick children and the baby born to save the sick children will be loved by his parents. He is not borned just to be a savior-sibling. If our children got a rare disease and he will die soon cause of his disease, we would at all costs save him even if we had to give birth to an other baby. We will love the newborn like our previous child. Finally our family will be happy, the sick children will be safe without diseases, he will smiling again and he will have a brother/sister to grow with.

Genetic Selection good or bad idea?

Genetic selection enables people to change the genes of the baby before birth, that is to say they can choose superior characteristics to reduce the risk of genetic diseases. It’s topical because in a not too distant future it may be a reality. What are the impacts on society? In a first part, we will see the positive aspects of this practice and in a second part, we will  see the negative aspects.

Genetic selection may be a good idea because if the baby is sick and has infected genes, then these genes may be modified or replaced by other genes, which may allow the baby to be born without disease and not to suffer? In addition, it will prevent parents from giving up the baby if they have the means to save it because it often happens that parents refuse to have a child with a serious illness.

However, this gene modification may not be 100% effective. We don’t really know the result, we don’t know if it will work really. In addition, to call a professional for this operation could be very expensive and some will think that this practice is not natural because it is a modification of the human body. The genes of the real parents are modified so that the body of the baby is not natural. With this practice, we search of the ‘perfect baby’ that would cause the rejection of other sick people.

We can therefore conclude that genetic selection has more negative than positive aspects. We think that this new technology would not be a good idea because there is too much constraint and this can lead to conflict and debate between people.
