Jabberwocky – Lewis Carroll

Jabberwocky- Lewis Carroll from Through the Looking Glass

‘Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

« Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
The frumious Bandersnatch! »

He took his vorpal sword in hand:
Long time the manxome foe he sought–
So rested he by the Tumtum tree,
And stood awhile in thought.

And, as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came wiffling through the tulgey wood,
And burbled as it came!

One, two! One, two! And through and through
The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
He went galumphing back.

« And hast thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay! »
He chortled in his joy.

‘Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

The last lesson, we watched the Tim Burton’s version of Alice in Wonderland and I understood something that I didn’t perceived when I saw the film for the first time. I understood that, as you can see, Tim Burton was also inspired by this poem in order to make his film. It’s Alice who killed the Jabberwocky.

I perceived that there are not an only referenced but the film is composed of a mix of different references to the works of Lewis Carroll.

I found interesting to show you this poem because even in the film the Mad Hatter recites it for Alice. I find it’s a great homage to Lewis Carroll. I think it’s for that I really liked this adaptation. And you ? What did you think about this film? Did you enjoy watching it?
