Les hommes , parfois très jeunes, sont appelés « les poilus », ce qui montre les très difficiles conditions de vie dans les tranchées. Le froid est particulièrement dur pour les soldats venus des colonies, « les tirailleurs sénégalais ». les lettres des soldats soulignent l’angoisse, la faim, la peur, les conditions d’hygiène médiocres (rats, poux, maladies).
Les combats sont terribles : les nouvelles armes ( obus, gaz, mitraillettes, chars) entraînent des morts nombreuses et de terribles blessures.
Plus de 10 millions de morts seront comptabilisés à la fin de la guerre, laissant de nombreuses veuves et orphelins. Les monuments aux morts seront construits dans toutes les villes de France. Les « gueules cassées » ( les blessés) sont peu à peu exclus et déconsidérés de la société et deviennent le symbole de la violence de cette guerre dont les combats prennent fin le 11 Novembre 1918.
