Let my people go est un Negro spiritual composé au XIXe siècle, l’auteur est inconnu. Son thème est un appel à la libération des esclaves noirs qui travaillaient dans les plantations du sud des États-Unis. Christianisés dès leur introduction aux États-Unis, les Noirs ont pu parler de leur sort au moyen des chants religieux que sont les hymnes et chorals des chrétiens baptistes ou méthodistes, seule musique autorisée par leurs maîtres.
Les paroles sont inspirées d’un passage de la Bible, qui rappelle que les Hébreux étaient esclaves en Égypte: « L’Éternel dit à Moïse ; Va vers Pharaon, et tu lui diras:Ainsi parle l’Éternel:Laisse aller mon peuple, afin qu’il me serve ».
