La première guerre mondiale se caractérise par une violence inédite pour les soldats.
Les conditions de vie dans les tranchées sont marquées par le froid, la terrible attente, les poux, les rats, la boue, la faim mais aussi par la solidarité de ceux que l’on nomme les poilus et les tirailleurs sénégalais.
Les nouvelles armes ( obus, gaz, mitraillettes) rendent les batailles terriblement meurtrière, comme à Verdun en 1916, qualifiée de « boucherie ». Les soldats français tentent de dénoncer ces violences par des mutineries.
Près de 10 millions de soldats mourront pendant ces 4 années de guerre laissant de nombreux orphelins et veuves. Les « Gueules cassées » deviendront le symbole de cette violence.
