Pancake Day

Pancake Day

Shrove Tuesday, translated as Mardi Gras in French, comes from the verb to shrive, which means « to obtain absolution for one’s sins by going to confession ».

Shrove Tuesday is now better known as Pancake Day, for the delicious little golden pancakes we are used to bake.

The Origin of Pancake Day

The festival of religious origin, therefore, seems today to be more particularly a gourmet festival.

Pancake day” takes place the day before the start of Lent.

It was traditionally the day when all Christians had to go to confession and when they ate all the rich foods forbidden during LentThe eggs, butter and fat that remained in the house were used to make pancakes, hence the name “Pancake Day”.

Where is it celebrated?

This day is celebrated in the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and parts of the United States.

When is it celebrated?

This celebration, therefore, has a religious character and the date of it varies according to the lunar calendar. But this year Pancake Day will be celebrated on Tuesday, March 1st.

How is it celebrated?

On this day, families and friends gather to prepare and eat sweet or savory pancakes.

During Pancake Day, the British organize pancake races, during which a large number of people dress up and run with a pancake in their pan. The goal of the race is to be the first to arrive at the finish line with the pancake in your pan by throwing the pancake while running. This tradition is said to have its origins in the 15th century when a British housewife busy making her pancakes, lost track of time, and when she heard the church bells she ran to the church with his pan and his pancakes.

Saint Patrick’s Day is celebrated on March 17 for more than 1500 years, because it is the death of Saint Patrick, in the year 461.

Since 1903, this day has been a public holiday in Ireland.

WHERE IS IT CELEBRATED ?

Originally, Saint Patrick was celebrated in Ireland.

Now, it’s celebrated around the world, people come together to celebrate.

WHY IS IT CELEBRATED ?

Saint Patrick’s Day is celebrated because St Patrick, after being kidnapped at the age of 16 by pirates and sold as a slave to a druid who made him a shepherd, became a priest.

He brought Christianity to Ireland and he explained the principle of the Trinity thanks to the shamrock, each of the leaves represents the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

After that, the shamrock became the new symbol of Ireland, because before it was the harp.

We also celebrate the beginning of spring.illustrations, cliparts, dessins animés et icônes de illustration vectorielle de la saint-patrick. modèle de conception plate de vecteur de jour de rue heureuse - saint patrick

HOW IS IT CELEBRATED ?

During the feast of Saint Patrick, people drink beer, they dance and they sing.

They parade in the streets dressed in green, like Leprechauns who wear a green hat, a clover and who have a red beard.

The legend tells if you catch one, he is bound to offer you his treasure at the end of a rainbow.

The Thames and the Chicago river are also colored in green.

Green is the emblematic color because in 1921, after the British occupation, Ireland naturally decided to adopt green as the symbol of the nation, but it is also the color of spring.

Other legends tell that the color green refers to the nickname given to Ireland, namely « the Emerald Isle », because of its green landscapes.

The story of Bonfire night

The story started in England in 1603 with a man called Guy Fawkes.

A little group of 13 catholics was created by Robert Catesby.

At that period the catholics were persecuted in England. The group had a plan: it was to blow up the Houses of Parliament and kill the king.

So, they rented a cellar under the house of Lords in the Parliament and they put 36 barrels  of gunpowder in this cellar.

On the day of the State Opening of Parliament in 1605 (a day when the king/queen comes to the Parliement to know about the new laws and make a speech), Guy Fawkes had the mission to go in the cellar and to crack the match to blow up the Parliament. But, a few days before, Lord Monteagle received an anonymous letter who said « don’t go to the parliament on the day of the opening because the Parliament will be blown up, say it also to the king ».

So, in 1605, on that day, Guy Fawkes was captured in the cellar and he was taken the the Tower of London where he was tortured.

And on January 31st, 1606 he was executed in front of the Parliament.

Christmas is celebrated every year during the season of Winter on December 25th.

Bonhomme De Neige, Neige, Noël, Hiver

On this year, it falls on a Saturday and the Christmas Eve falls on Friday, December 24th.

This celebration is comemorated almost everywhere in the World, on all the continents.

This celebration is an event where we are gathered around a big meal often composed of turkey served in the most beautiful dishes like Thanksgiving. As well as the traditionnal yule log and also obviously the hot Chocolate with chantilly cream and the gingerbread house, of course !

The principal Christmas’s character is Santa Claus but before we knew him with the name of Saint Nicholas.

Then, Saint Nicholas became Santa Claus. However, before, he was green and he was transformed in red by Coca Cola, which has created the design for an advertisment and it still looks like this since then.

This fantastic character does a world trip during the night of December 24th. When he arrives in a house, he goes down the fireplace or opens the door with the famous magic key. He drops off lots of presents at the bottom of the christmas tree, that we decorate with plenty of bulbs and tinsels or other decorations in the shape of Christmas symbols.

And don’t forget to do your Christmas list to send to Santa Claus to have lots of presents on Christmas morning or during Christmas Eve.

By L and J, who wish you a merry christmas !
