Cooking Class

During this trip we were able to taste some typical regional and American dishes. Indeed, after visiting the university we were able to take an active part in the American cooking class. One of these famous dishes was cornbread. This typical American dish is not very famous in France which allowed us to discover quite a different taste from the typical French bread. Then we learnt to cook the White Lightning Chicken Chili. This fantastic spicy soup is amazingly simple and extremely fast to make. This preparation was probably the most appreciated one, along with the last dish. The last preparation is a famous chocolate brownie. This rather widespread dish is a delight for everyone, young and old alike and did not have time to cool down……to be eaten .

But one of the parts that everyone has probably enjoyed the most was tasting. The soup and corn bread mixed quite well and because the brownie was still hot and melting, it was quite a delight to our taste buds. Unfortunately, after eating our filling we moved on to the less popular part of any cook, cleaning, and storage.

To conclude we can say that this activity led by fantastic people was very interesting to discover new dishes unknown in France and the atmosphere was so pleasant that we could share a good laugh during the preparation of these different dishes.

Flying of Saturday 8th February 2020

After several months of efforts to make our trip to the United States a reality, the big day had arrived.

We all got together in the castle parking at 3 : 45 a.m and we left Saumur by bus at 4 a.m.

We arrived at Paris Roissy Charles de Gaulle Airport at 8 : 30 a.m. We started to check in luggage. It was a pretty stressful moment.

We boarded the plane at 11 a.m (french hour of course) and after that we took off and we left France.

The flight was veryyy long, it was 8 hours long. We went over Greenland, it was so beautiful !

Then, we landed at Chicago at 2 p.m (local hour). And we had a five-hour stepover. So we waited, did little exercices that the teachers had prepared for us and we played cards.

The 5 hours were also very long, we were eager to arrive, we were very excited to meet our host families.

But the second domestic flight that we took was smaller. And it was a mechanical problem that made us a little late.

I think we all slept during this flight it was a long and exhausting day !

And then we landed in Asheville at 10.30 p.m ! We arrived in the airport and we met finally our host families, it was so emotional to discover them.

They were waiting for us with signs and our name writting on it, it touched us a lot. We felt confortable and waited. We were very well received.

Then we got our bags and we all separated and we left with our families.

Attending an American high school: Franklin School of Innovation

Monday 10th February,

On my first day in an American high school with my penpal Rayna we studied American sign langage. It was really nice to learn this subject beceause we don’t have this in France. After , we attended in her sport class and we played to the « ladder ball » , it was a little boring for me ! In this sport you have balls with a rope and you need to throw it on little « ladder » and if the ball stays on the floor, you lose points. And if the ball with the rope stay on the ladder you win some points.

From my point of view American schools are so different than french school. They had less students in their class room. And they go to an other room but with different students beceause all of them don’t have the same subjects.

Most of the time ; they were working in teams and they were on their laptops. And during the class sometimes they could eat or use their phone. Sometimes (it depended on their teachers) they could go to the bathroom without permission.

On the one hand i think that sometimes it’s not really «  a part of the cake » ! For me, it’s often noisy in their class room ! But on the other hand i appreciated the freedom they had eating during classes !

American FAST FOOD

Sunday 16th February ,

In the morning my family and i went to the Dock Donust. It’s like a little restaurant and they sell only donut’s. They bake their donut’s in front of you. So, you can see people put the circular shaped donuts in boiling oil to fry them. After you need to choose what you want on it.

For exemple , i asked for vanilla and nutella frosting. My penpal took donuts with becon on it. You can choose from 20 different flavors.

Later on , at 3 pm , we went in an american local fast food restaurant . It was called FRAMER BURGER. Rachel, my penpal’s mother’s told me that in Asheville they try to develop the local fast food to support the local producters.

In FARMER BURGER they support the meat farmer. And it’s to give a better quality of food for people and beceause the animals leave in better conditions than the big fast food chaines like. In Asheville they have big places .

Around you have so many farmers to produce the tomato sauce and cows farmer for the steak in the hamburger.

I believe that’s really great for the USA to produce organic food and to help small producters.

And you what do you think about this development ?

Biltmore Estate : Afternoon

The Biltmore House is one of the largest privately owned house in America. It was built forGeorge and Edith Vanderbilt between 1889 and 1895. The architecture was inspired by theFrench Renaissance Châteaux as Château de Blois, Chenonceau and Chambord. Andnowadays it has become a major tourist attraction in North Carolina, with 1.4million visitors each year. During our exchange trip we had the opportunity to visit this amazing historical estate-turned-into-a-museum

After lunch, we took a bus to move around the estate and get to the Biltmore house. All of us were really impressed by the size of the estate which is spreading out over several miles.

When we arrived, we were surprised by this giant house which strongly looked like our castle of the Loire Valley but in a more modern way. It is a beautiful house which looks more like a castle than a house. We first arrived in the hall of the house where there was an angel statue, surrounded by lot of plants under a glass roof. It was so pretty. Then, we visited the dining room with its big chimney and some tapestries on the wall, even if it is a big room, it is still darker than the other rooms. We couldn’t believe that only a family lived there because it is as big as a reception room.
The library is an impressive room because the walls are full of books, these are old books with a leather blanket. In the middle of the room, you can’t miss the numerous sofas and chairs to sit on and read a book. If we looked up, we could admire a replica of a renaissance painting on the roof, which was beautiful. There were also countless bedrooms (35) and George Vanderbilt’s gilded room was designed by Richard Morris Hunt and is connected to his wife’s room.
In the hall we also had access to the music room where a magnificent piano was standing, surrounded with art pieces. The lightning was incredible and the sun was shining through the whole room.

In the basement we visited many rooms. The ones that struck us the most were the indoor swimming pool, the bowling room and the gymnasium. There was also a room where they kept firearms and where they smoked. we could also admire the pool room, and even if it was really dark in there, the atmosphere made us feel like we were in the 1890’s. An other room that was striking was a room with strange paintings on the wall, there was a film being
shown and a sport to take pictures. The drawings on the walls were quite abstract and really strange but it made the room more interesting.

When we arrived to the kitchen and pantry area, we met an old man who started talking to us in french when he heard us speaking french. He was very nice and he told us a lot about the Biltmore House and asked where we were from in France. Apparently he knew our region thanks to the wine, and he had been a teacher in Angers, which is quite a coincidence since it’s really near Saumur. It was a really fun encounter!

When we finished the visit of the house we headed towards the garden and the greenhouse.
For that we crossed all the garden but because of the season everything was dead … However we had an incredible view of the landscape ; we could see the Blue Ridge Mountains and a beautiful view on Asheville’s valley. All we could see was the property of G.Vanderbilt.
Then we arrived in front of a big alley which led us to the greenhouse and we went inside. The climate was hotter and more wet because of the diversity of the plants to conserve. The greenhouse was divided in differents sections, we began by the « westerns plants » we saw some beautiful orchids and poppy and many other flowers. Then we continued in the exotic area and we saw bamboos, ferns, hibiscus and to finish we went in the desert section
and we saw a lot of differents kind of cactus.
The greenhouse was so huge we took a lot of time to visit it and also a lot of pictures and sometimes we met other french people. It was the occasion to warm up a bit because this friday was the coldest of our trip.

After finishing the tour of the house, the garden and the greenhouse, we went to the gift shops, we tried on funny hats, tasted some dressings with pretzels, and we chatted with the cashier in one of the shops, she tried speaking french and we taught her how to say hello and how to introduce herself. She was super nice like everyone that we came across at the estate.

Before leaving the estate we took a group picture with the house in the background, Jessica had to go all the way up the stairs to take the shot but the result is worth it!

It was a very great day and I think we all had a lot of fun and learned a lot of things. Moreover the weather was amazing, it allowed us to take beautiful pictures.
We are glad that we could visit the estate because at first we were not sure we could make it!

Asheville High School

After watching several tv shows featuring a high school student as the main character, you can imagine how excited I was to attend an American high school! Watching it on screen is way more different from reality. Let’s figure it out!

I was lucky enough to be part of the four students out of thirty to go to Asheville High School. Since Lana, my host, was studying there, I followed her through her school days. The building is amazing! To see old red bricks was surprising but in a very good way. Waking up at 7 am, a quick breakfast, driving to school and there we go! Every day was the same way. Each lesson lasted between 30 minutes and 1 hour and a half hour and were called period. School days were made of 5. When I opened the door, what struke me the most were the desks. Each student had his own desk. No defined places, people could sit wherever they wanted to. Teachers were already waiting for them. No time to waste, the lesson started. All of them wrote down what the teacher was saying on their computers, covered up with stickers, just for fun or in order to spread messages as a piece of work, a little part of themselves that they shared with their classmates. The room’s friendly atmosphere helps to focus. What a pleasure to hear speaking English all day long. I miss it so much.

French classes were the funniest and the most exciting hours of the day. How interesting it was to see how foreigners learned and saw your language. It was a pleasure to help them do exercises. Sometimes, I couldn’t even be helpful since I wasn’t able to explain how something worked as. Then you can understand the struggles and the little tricky parts of your mother tongue.

What a shock I had when I realized students only had 20 minutes for lunch and that they just ate a sandwich. The first day, I was starving but I think I could have get used to.

Even if I only spent few days there, I can say that movies always emphasize the reality. People just come as they are, do their stuff and live their own life. I felt comfortable, I wasn’t afraid of being judged because of my clothes or my haircut. Of course, it is true that school’s corridors are lined with lockers on each side, and that the school’s emblems are everywhere and cheerleaders do exist but don’t always trust what you see on screen. Try to build your own opinion and to get your point of view.

I really enjoyed attending school in another country. To see how it worked has helped me taking steps back and opening my mind to other school system. I feel so lucky to have lived such an experience and be sure, i’ll try again !

Blue Ridge Moutains walk

On Sunday 16th, we went on a hike in the Blue Ridge Mountains with our host families. We met at 10:00 am in a parking. The ascent was very nice but also very hard. During this ascent, we found a tree with a hole in which we could enter as you can see in this picture.

There were many dead tree trunks which were black inside because they were burned by the sun. Once up, the view was spectacular and Mael’s host father served us hot chocolate, it helped us to be hotter and to give us energy to go down. When we returned, we saw a lot of streams in the rocks wich formed stalactites. After this walk, which lasted more than two hours, we went in a restaurant where we ate an hamburger and some oinon rings. It was a great and exhausted day where we discovered a beautiful place. Moreover, it allowed us to get to know an other american family. We both really apreciated this special moment.

BBQ Dinner

Farewell BBQ Dinner

Before going to France, every family was invited to a BBQ Dinner in the Franklin School of Innovation. The goal was to share a last meal and especially a great moment together.
Some organizers from the UNCA were present, to thank everybody for our exchange which had been a success. Besides, some of us could talk in front of all the parents and 2 or 3 students were interviewed, and they finally wrote an article.
This article was published and emphasizes the link between Saumur and Asheville. It underlines the will of theses cities to repeat this cultural exchange for the next years.
Concerning the food, we had the opportunity to taste lots of meals with meats. We also tasted a huge variety of desserts.
There was a great mood because all the different meals were brought by the guests, so everything was homemade cooked.
Following this friendly moment, we got some gifts like T-shirts , caps, scarfs and other clothes from Asheville or the UNCA.
Thus, we made the most of this time to take pictures and thank everybody with the promise that Saumur and Asheville will keep this mentality of sharing experiences and continue to develop international bonds.
