Dans la mythologie grecque, Prométhée est un titan qui, avec son frère Epiméthée, crée l’homme à partir de la boue. Il vole le Feu sacré de l’Olympe pour l’offrir aux hommes, ce qui le fait condamner par Zeus à se faire dévorer le foie, chaque jour, attaché à un rocher (le foie étant un des rares organes à pouvoir se régénérer en cas de lésion).
Il est finalement délivré par Héraclès au cours de ses douze travaux. Cette figure mythique symbolise le progrès, la volonté de dépassement et l’apport de la connaissance.
