World Map – Lisa & Eleonoora

The McArthur’s Universal Corrective Map of the World shows the world flipped upside down, at least in our eyes. It is a map that brings out the different perspective to the world. The map is made by an Australian man, and so he has put his own native country in the centre, not Europe as we are normally accustomed to, and so he has created a map that represents more his world-view.

In the map it is possible to see things that are not so visible in the normal world map, for example how close the USA and Russia are to each other, and as well how big the Pacific Ocean really is. These are also the things, which would be interesting to look with the pupils.

The map would be an interesting tool to be used in the classroom because with it, it is possible to challenge the worldview of the pupils. With the help of the map pupils could realize how big the world really is and how small part Europe is. They can also perceive the importance of Asia, especially to the people who live there. It is also possible to talk with the pupils how the centre of the map depends on the person who creates the map.

One interesting exercise to be done with the pupils would be, that they all would draw their own world map. Probably with the youngest they would situate their own country (or city, depending on the age) in the middle, and then draw some parts of Europe and the rest of the world would have only a little importance. Afterwards it would be important to talk with the pupils so that everyone would understand the idea behind the exercise.
