Gene editing

Gene Editing is a type of genetic engineering in which DNA is inserted, deleted, modified or replaced in the genome of a living organism. Gene Editing is debated a lot. Indeed, some people think it is a great chance for humanity to eradicate illness. But others may be afraid of the risks. How far can gene Editing go ?  What are the risks ?

On the one hand, gene Editing can help to cure people and  eradicate illness. But on the other hand, people may abuse of this technology. Gene Editing is getting more and more concrete day after day and thanks to it some people were already saved. For example, Charlie Whitaker was born with DBA, a debilitating genetic condition. His parents wanted to cure him by giving Birth to another child. Jamie, his brother, was born in 2003. He was clear of the disease. The doctors transplanted Jamie’s gene into Charlie. Since that Charlie has no more traces of DBA in his bone marrow. In this case, the saviour sibling is loved by his family and was ok to help his brother.

As we said, some people may abuse of gene Editing. Maybe this technology will allow us to customise our children. For example, we can imagine that we might be able to choose the IQ, the hair color etc. By changing the genome it can create new diseases. In the worse case, it can lead to an eugenic society in which only “perfect human” are able to live.

Gene Editing can be a great chance for humanity to cure diseases and save people but not at any costs. But we can’t avoid the risk that people might make a bad use of it.

  1. This method for me isn’t the better one. Because if we create a baby only for that, it seems cruel for the child when we think about it. Also, we don’t know if the parents after giving birth to the saviour sibling, will leave him ?

  2. It might a good idea to have the choice to eradicate illness even if it means to “change” the children. But we have to keep in mind that those illnesses make us what we are and it is not necessary to eradicate them. If people think that it is good, we shouldn’t judge them and same for people who don’t agree with it.

    1. I think that everyone decides what he wants to do, whether he wants to change his child or anything else. Personally I am not for this idea because we must accept our child as he is, the perfect child does not exist and it is not by changing it that he will become it.

  3. Eradicating an illness can be a very useful method. However, we must not forget that it is a test to overcome and a choice we can make. Indeed, some people choose to give birth to another child in order to heal the one who has an illness. This is the case of Charlie Whitaker and his brother. I think it’s always difficult to know that we are created just to save someone. Indeed, being born for that gives the impression that he is not really part of his family. So, I think that this method must be realized intelligently and in case of real necessity.

  4. I don’t agree with this technology because I think it’s not very useful. It’s not accessible for everyone because it’s quite expensive.
Moreover, it create a “perfect” society and more selective access to for exemple the world of work who reshearch intelligents employees.
We must accept our faults. It could also be misused by choosing all the characters of the futur baby.
However in some cases of illness as in the case of Charlie this can be very useful.

  5. I think that it is a good idea, but if we eradicate illness other illness can appear. Gene Editing helps families and children to have a better life. I agree when it is written it some people may abuse of gene editing. There won’t be any diversity people won’t be unique anymore

  6. Making use of the modification of genes is not a good idea. Indeed, many people abuse this technique to choose their children. Children would not be made by nature but by technology. We could attend a genetically modified society if people continue to abuse the use of gene modification. Even if gene editing helps to treat sick people, there is no reason to abuse them to get the child of our dreams.

  8. I don’t think gene editing is a good solution. Human diversity is its strength and is very important for the well being of humanity. Diseases are a part of life, and manipulating genes can be very dangerous. for example, it is easy to imagine huge gaps between “perfect” populations and those who cannot afford or do not have safe and healthy access to this technology. Finaly, to manipulate genes it is necessary to review our relations to ourselves because this technology considers us as imperfect objects.

  9. I think that allowing people to use gene editing to cure or eradicate illness can be a good thing because it can save a lot of life and that good. The fact , like you said, it’s that it can also be used to try to created the “perfect human”, that i think can’t exist because we can’t define what is perfection.

  10. I’m agree with the article and I think that in some cases like Charles Whitaker’s normal since. Today we have the opportunity to treat his cases but I think that Gene Editing must be limited and secure by laws to avoid some risks
