Genetic selection is a technique that allows people to “choose” the genes of baby to make an ideal person. It makes us wonder how genetic selection is an idea of progress in our society. It raises the debate in which some people think that it helps people but others thinks that it brings ethical problems.
On the one hand, genetic selection is an idea of progress. Indeed, it helps parents to have a baby without any illness. Parents feel better to know that their children have a better life. They also can choose different characteristics to make their children look like their ideal children thank to PGD. From example, in the movie “Gattaca”, the main character’s parents used this technique on their second child so he won’t be sick and he is kind of perfect for them. Morever, many celebrities and also unknown people chose some of their child’s genes.
On the other handy, genetic selection raises ethical problems. Some people wonder: what perfection is? And it brings up the topic of eugenics. The eugenic is a set of belief and pratices at improving the genetic quality of a human population by excluding certain genetic groups. For example, when Hitler wanted to create the Aryan race, that was the perfect race for him, it was eugenics. There won’t be any diversity people won’t be unique any more. The movie “Gattaca” deals with eugenics and perfection.
Genetic selection is an idea of progress because it helps people’s or their children health. It also allows to reduce illnesses. However, the easy access genetic selection makes people to abuse of it and it can create eugenics.
For me, the genetic selection is not a good idea of progress because if this processus is use there will be two parts of the population, the “genetically modify” people and the “natural” people. There will be discrimination. People who use this method want a perfect baby but the perfection doesn’t exist and the human species will can’t evolve naturally.
I think that the genetic selection method is a very individual matter. For me, it should be used in a situation independent of us, when the pregnancy is at risk or when parents already have experience with a sick child and don’t want the next one to go through the same. In the future, another healthy child will be able to provide care to sick siblings. However, this method isn’t the best way out of the situation when parents want to interfere in the appearance of their child. A child living with the awareness that he was designed by his parents, may have problems with accepting themselves and constantly asking a question:
how could I really look if it was not my parents decision?
For me, the genetic selection who is a technique to choose the baby it can be a good thing but with some limits. Because with that we can help people to have a baby without illness. So I am agree just for this point and you said that in your article.
After that, after this point, I am on the part of people who think that it brings ethical problems. Because if people can choose the physical of their babies for me it like choose a clothe. If a “type” of baby is in fashion, all people use the genetic selection to have this baby. And then, we see people with different way when they don’t want or they can’t use genetic selection.
Genetic selection is for me a method to use wisely, because if she fall in wrong hands it can badly turn.
This method can make people create a group of person who have exactly same perfect genes (they look like clones) and turn them into weapons of war. This could create a lot of conflicts in the world maybe.
I’m mitigated for this technology, because some people will be very happy because they will be able to chose how their baby will look like. But like in every new and old technology bad people want to use it illegally. So for me this technology is a good thing but not necessary for the humanity. I think it’s better to focus on another technology that can help people and advance the science.
For my part, I think that genetic selection is not a good thing. This technique makes it possible to choose the genes of the baby to make it an ideal person is not a good thing because it could surely create dissatisfactions. The world today is trying to find perfection, but I think that perfection does not exist. By doing this technique, parents might be afraid of having an imperfect child. Genetic selection announces that it would be useful to have children without disease, but I think that making this selection is not a good thing but that this technique called progress technique would create new diseases that we should always try to counter. I do not agree with this idea of progress because we would not have our own genes anymore. Nature is not enough to satisfy the happiness of a new family.
I think the genetic selection is a very very bad idea. It’s like a version of the natural selection. It’s no ethical to change the gene of babies. But if it’s for cure the illness, I understand we need it.
I am against genetic selection. I think that when we expect a child we should accept it as it is and not want perfection. For me perfection is the fact that a child is a flaw. I think parents should love their child as he came into the world with his own characteristics rather than the characteristics they chose.
