Feet with wings

He is so fast with his special shoes…

His sandals, called pédila by the Greeks  were made of  branches, but were described as beautiful, golden and immortal, and enabled him  to take the roads with the speed of wind. Originally they had no wings, but late in the artistic representations, they are depicted with them. In certain images, the wings spring directly from the ankles. He has also been depicted with a purse or a bag in his hands, and wearing a robe or cloak, which had the power to confer invisibility. His weapon was a sword of gold, which killed Argos.

Over the years “St. Peter” has evolved into a stock character that is now widely used in jokescartoonscomediesdramas, and plays. Such caricatures almost all play upon Peter’s role as the “keeper of the keys of the kingdom of heaven” inMatthew 16:19, on the basis of which he is often depicted as an elderly, bearded man who sits at the pearly gates that serve as heaven’s main entrance, often portrayed as a sort of hotel-style doorman / bouncer who personally interviews prospective entrants into Heaven, often seated behind a desk, or standing at a lectern. He usually has a big book in which the names of the saved are written.
