IMPRESSIONISM

Impressionism developed during the late 19th century in France. The name was created after Claude Monet’s Impressions : soleil levant.

Impressionist painters wanted to concentrate on the effect of light and colour over nature. Their techniques included the use of colours and their relations to each other with light strokes to imitate the effect of changing light.

Monet, Manet, Degas, Renoie, Pissarro, Degas and Cézanne are some of the major artists of the movement.

English painters Constable and Turner had started to study the effect of changing light and of the masses created by colour earlier.
