Today, we are going to study the film « two lovers » directed by James Gray who is an American director, screenwriter and producer born on April 14, 1969 in New York.

He has directed several films like: “Armageddon Time” and “AD astra” and many more….

The film « two lovers » is a so-called romance film. This film is about a young man with a psychological disorder, he is bipolar. His name is Leonard, and he hesitates between following his destiny and marrying Sandra – the woman his parents chose for him – and rebelling and listening to his feelings for his new neighbor, Michelle, with whom he has fallen in love. During this film we will be given to see how he makes a choice between the two women.

The staging is very neat, and each scene has its importance. Moreover, the magnificent photography and the music, discreet but of a rare beauty, contributes marvelously to the tragic atmosphere which emanates from the film. Despite the slowness of the film, we are not bored for a moment, and we quickly become attached to the main characters, who have complex and ambiguous traits. The first sequence of the film instantly immerses us in the dark atmosphere filled with tragedy that will accompany us until a poignant finale that will make many tears flow. The different processes used, whether tracking or handheld, close-ups or wide shots, all seem to make sense.
