Parmi les contes que l’on peut rapprocher de Coraline, s’impose Hansel et Gretel des frères Grimm (1812), parfois cité en référence par Selick. On peut relever comme éléments communs: enfants abandonnés des parents, découverte d’un lieu tentateur, méchante aux pouvoirs surnaturels, emprisonnement, héroïne féminine qui s’échappe en sauvant l’un des siens…
On peut également trouver une parenté avec certains chapitres des Aventures de Pinocchio de Carlo Collodi (1881), comme au pays des jouets qui est un monde trompeur où les enfants sont transformé en ânes.
