If I stay – Gayle Forman

During the last holiday I took the train back to Nevers and bought a small book that look pretty! IF I STAY written by Gayle Forman.

She writes for New York Times Magazine, Elle, and Glamour, and she was born in 1970
His first novel is  » If I stay.  »

I haven’t had time to read it all, but the style is pretty simple but nice, I was especially attracted by the story.
Mia, 17 years old cello prodigy, rock star father’s daughter, drummer’s sister and girlfriend of a rock star, will have a car accident and will become an orphan. She’ll be in a coma and have a choice to make, which depends only on herself. She can stay or die. We will see that the music will have a very important place in history.

The book was made into a film, I’ll probably watch it tonight, at least it’s a nice story!

Shirley- Charlotte Bronte

After studying Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte for my « TPE »(cross curricular project) which passionate me, I was interested in all the novels of Charlottes Bronte. I liked his novel called « Shirley ».
« Shirley » was published in 1849 and its popularity allowed to « Shirley » to become a woman’s name.
The story is set in Yorkshire during the last years of the Napoleonic Wars. Times are hard for the English, either for industrial or for the workers. In addition to the financial consequences of the war on trade, industry must deal with riots against their factories. Indeed, workers are worried about the arrival of new machinery. The main characters are Robert Moore, an industrialist and his brother Louis humble tutor. Caroline Helstone, pastor Helstone niece and cousin of Robert is in love with it. But Robert, with financial troubles and riots of the workers don’t want marriage. Fortunately for Carolina, comes to town the young heiress Keldar Shirley and his companion Mrs Prior.

http://hnstbkrvws.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/shirley.jpg
Charlotte Bronte was more proud of that novel that of « Jane Eyre » and I understand why. It’s more dense, it deals with politics, women’s issues, social classes, barriers of marriage and religion in general.
In this novel, Charlotte Bronte leaves an interesting evocation of life in England of the early nineteenth, customs, fears, the worker’s world face the bosse’s world, poverty and charity.
The novelist tackles the description of an entire city and is very frank to criticize the industrial and commercial class.

If you like Charlotte Bronte, I highly recommend you to read this novel. I really liked.

Did you know that Kim Jong-Un loves Katy Perry ?

Today, I decided to talk about an american film called The Interview. Directed by Seth Rogen in 2014, starring himself, James Franco and Randall Park, The Interview is a comedy in which the host of the talk show Skylark Tonight and his producer have to kill the famous Korean dictator Kim Jong-Un. In fact, The Interview isn’t a cinema masterpiece, but I found it interesting because It is a topicality.

Kim Jong-Un, born in 1983, son of Kim Jong-Il is the leader of North Korea (since december 2011). Officially, his government is not considered as a dictatorship, but unofficially, it is. At only 28, he became the « Supreme Leader of North Korea ». Some people said that he’d even tried to kill his step brother, to show who is « the boss » in North Korea. Like the previous leader of North Korea, he’s against South Korea, United States, and every country which agreed with it.

Moreover, even if the people of North Korea are starving, the « Supreme Leader of North Korea » is very fond of good food and luxury. Like his father and grand father, Kim Jong-Un use propaganda in an excessive way. The Interview shows it really well, because, when Aaron Rapaport and Dave Skylark enters in North Korea, they meet Sook-yin Park (minister of propaganda).
Kim Jong-Un is also known for the high number of executions, and for the concentration camps.

The Interview‘s release was very debated. In fact, after the release of the trailer, Kim Jong-Un asked the ONU to punished Rogen and Franco. He started to boycott the film. Sony (owner of Columbia) was victim of cyber attacks, and threatened by (probably) the North Korean government.

Insurgent

Hi everybody ! Today, i decided to talk about Insurgent (wich is the sequel of Divergent). First, i know that you will probably hate me, but Divergent bored me a lot, i fell asleep in front of this film.. I think this is because of the same long action. BUT one day my friends propose me to go to cinema for watching the second part, i couldn’t say no. So, I went. And here.. I just loved Insurgent ! I found every characters more and more interesting than we understand the clue of the movie. Shailene Woodley’s playing is just wonderful, i lived her emotions, her fear, sadness.. With her.

I was so surprised by this ! Actions and events of this movie are really really fascinating, i didn’t expect that, for being honest with you. So, please, don’t hit me.

I think you should watch Insurgent, even if you didn’t like Divergent. I did the experience, Insurgent is really really nice !

Bonnie and Clyde

Image

Bonnie and Clyde were two famous criminals during the twenties…..

Bonnie Parker was born in 1910 in Texas, after the father’s death when she was four years old, she went in Dallas. She was a good pupil, she won a writing price and Bonnie write lot of poems like « the story of Bonnie and Clyde ». she was married to a criminal and she has not seen since 1929. Bonnie meets Clyde in 1930.

Clyde Barrow was born in 1910 in West Dallas, in a caravan then when his father earn more money, he lives in tent with his five brothers and sisters. when his young, he already a wrongdoer with his little brother Marvin  « Buck » who died in 1933 shot by a policeman. Clyde was arrest in 1926, 1928, 1929.

Bonnie and Clyde met in 1930 at friend’s home. Clyde go to jail a few time after this meeting and he commit his first murder on his co-prisoner who commit sexual aggression on Clyde. In 1932 he found a criminal organisation. After the death Two young policeman, shot by Clyde in 1934 the FBI  of five states increase their search. The officer find a road where clyde must pass, and they ambush the Clyde’s car and kill the couple in May 23rd 1934

The people saw Bonnie and Clyde as heroes, no as a criminal because during the twenties it’s a depression, and people in US hasn’t got a job or money. they are seen as « Robin hood » because, for people, they fight against the power of money. For Bonnie and Clyde there is the love which make it famous.

Bonnie poem : « the story of Bonnie and Clyde »

I’m sure you all have read

How they rob and steal

And those who squeal
Are usually found dying or dead.There’s lots of untruths to these write-ups;
They’re not so ruthless as that;
Their nature is raw;
They hate all the law
The stool pigeons, spotters, and rats.They call them cold-blooded killers;
They say they are heartless and mean;
But I say this with pride,
That I once knew Clyde
When he was honest and upright and clean. But the laws fooled around,
Kept taking him down
And locking him up in a cell,
Till he said to me,
« I’ll never be free,
So I’ll meet a few of them in hell. »The road was so dimly lighted;
There were no highway signs to guide;
But they made up their minds
If all roads were blind,
They wouldn’t give up till they died.The road gets dimmer and dimmer;
Sometimes you can hardly see;
But it’s fight, man to man,
And do all you can,
For they know they can never be free.From heart-break some people have suffered;
From weariness some people have died;
But take it all in all,
Our troubles are small
Till we get like Bonnie and Clyde. If a policeman is killed in Dallas,
And they have no clue or guide;
If they can’t find a fiend,
They just wipe their slate clean
And hand it on Bonnie and Clyde. There’s two crimes committed in America
Not accredited to the Barrow mob;
They had no hand
In the kidnap demand,
Nor the Kansas City depot job.A newsboy once said to his buddy;
« I wish old Clyde would get jumped;
In these awful hard times
We’d make a few dimes
If five or six cops would get bumped. »The police haven’t got the report yet,
But Clyde called me up today;
He said, « Don’t start any fights
We aren’t working nights
We’re joining the NRA. »From Irving to West Dallas viaduct
Is known as the Great Divide,
Where the women are kin,
And the men are men,
And they won’t « stool » on Bonnie and Clyde. If they try to act like citizens
And rent them a nice little flat,
About the third night
They’re invited to fight
By a sub-gun’s rat-tat-tat.They don’t think they’re too tough or desperate,
They know that the law always wins;
They’ve been shot at before,
But they do not ignore
That death is the wages of sin.Some day they’ll go down together;
And they’ll bury them side by side;
To few it’ll be grief
To the law a relief
But it’s death for Bonnie and Clyde.

Bowling for Columbine

Last year, I published an article about the book « Hate List » which deals with a killing in a school.

Now I want to speak about « Bowling for Columbine », a movie directed by Michael Moore in 2002, which deals with the same subject as the book : the shooting (here) in Columbine school.

Students of TL1 know this film director because we watched « Fahrenheit 9/11 » with our Philosophy teacher.

This movie is a documentary which criticizes american society. In fact, it denounces the fact that if there are many homicides by firearm in America, it’s because we can own one easily. Michael Moore plays the role of a kind of Candide, who pretends interview people innocently.

This movie is a good denunciation of the ease of obtaining arms in America, you should watch it !

Orange Is The New Black

« Orange Is The New Black » is a TV show directed by Jenji Kohan since 2013. There are 2 seasons and it’s « dramatic comedy ». Recently I’ve learnt this series is based on the autobiography « Orange Is The New Black : My Year in a Women’s Prison » written by Piper Kerman.
This series tells the story of Piper Chapman who is for 15 months in a women’s prison because 10 years earlier she had been carrying a drug case.  In this series the homosexuality and the place of women in society are present with humor and irony.

I love this series. I recommend it ! Moreover I’m going to read the autobiography written by P. Kerman. So I would like write an other article about this book and « Je de l’écrivain et jeu de l’écriture ».

The Peaky Blinders

The Peaky Blinders is a TV serie (directed by Steven Knight) which represents as much as possible, for me, the attractive and very British atmosphere in the small villages of  19th century. In my opinion, this mixture of darkness, rain, and dust is a great background for a serie.

This one is based upon the story of a criminal group named « The Peaky Blinders » and living in Small Heath in the 19th century. They were very violent and numerous. They had scars and frightened their enemies with razor blades hidden in their cap…This story offered a good beginning.

This universe, with its poverty, underlined violence of the gang in the serie but also the poetry and the beauty which can be hidden in every place, even in the dark streets of a miserable village, cold and dirty. Here, you can see how the pictures are incredibly well brought under control :

I can’t help being fond of this serie, it’s a real treasure, and you should see it if you’re attracted by British culture and history : here is a wonderful mix of real facts and poetry.

Mr Nobody

It’s a drama movie, about a science fiction and chronicles of the life, written and directed by Jaco Van Dormael in 2009. The story of the movie is about Nemo Nobody, playing by Jared Leto, aged to 118 years old. He’s the last mortal human in a world where the immortality is possible for humans. Throughout the movie we discovered the differents life of Nemo. Moreover it’s a biographic movie of Jaco Van Darmael and he has received a prix for that.

With differents flashback, we discover his life but Nemo has confus remembrances. Also if he doesn’t like his life , he can changed her with a come back in the past. It’s the butterfly effect. This movie wants us to think about the importance of our choices and their consequences. « If you never make a choice, everything is possible »

I recommend this film for these actors and mainly for his psychological impact.

Anecdote about Jared Leto : This actor likes transformations, for Mr Nobody, he is turns into old person, also in Chapter 27 where he’s the murderer of John Lennon. He had to take 28kg for this role.

T. Gainsborough

Hello everyone!  Today, I’m going to speak about a famous British painter, Thomas Gainsborough. He’s propably one of the most famous portraitist in England of the 18th century., after Reynolds.

He began his life as a simple landscape painter, then as an unknown and low-paid portraitist of region’s merchants. But, he managed to become a close friend of noble people and even, the Royal Family. Indeed, the whole Family considered him the greatest painter of this time. Unfortunetly, they are forced to choose Reynolds as the court official painter.

Obviously, we realize that Gainsborough has been more famous as a portraitist whereas it represents a minor part of his work. In fact, he likes above all painting landscapes which is quite, because of the Academy, a rejected genre. Besides, his landscape works of art have been consider too natural : Gainsborough didn’t use the painting rules of his time.

This painting, nicknamed The Blue Boy, is representative of the Gainsborough’s retraining from landscape paintings to portraits. He needed to earn more money. Probably, we can say that Gainsborough inspired himself with Van Dyck’s masterpieces.

Tristessa

Hello everybody !

Today here I am to give you a short reading advice about a Kerouac’s short book since we studied his work in Initiatory and Exile stories notion. It’s named Tristessa, it was published in 1960. This book relates the author’s life between 1955 and 1956 while he was living in Mexico with his friends. This book is also a meditation about love and it’s meaning because the author fell in love with a Mexican prostitute he named Tristessa.

Now let’s focus on the writing style ; we quickly notice that Kerouac’s style is really singular and that we have to get used to it to appreciate the book. In deed, Kerouac has the manner to write down everything without stopping : that’s why we have few full marks and a lot of dashes as he didn’t finish his sentences. I don’t know if it already happened to you but when I read it I get used to the rythm and sometimes at the end of a page I have to stop because my breath follows the rythm of the text so I feel like I’m choking haha it’s quite weird. We also notice that there are no chapters except that the book is composed of two parts to indicate that time has passed. I also realized that the action is very consdensed because we follow the author’s routine but sometimes he stops on details that take one or two pages and it goes back to the main action, I admit that it’s quite confusing sometimes.

I don’t want to spoil you the book but I really liked the main plot because Kerouac is really comitted in the approach of displaying each feelings and each thoughts inside his head but it’s embarassing because he is able to write very nice things and put next to it terrible comparisons haha. I also have to mention the presence of drugs at each page and again I admit that it can be annoying sometimes but in a way we understand that every characters are addicted to drugs so we couldn’t avoid it. But the meditative’s aspect of the book is really well built because you can see the characters and his feelings evolving through the times and I noticed that the Beat Generation has a real gift in the way that the things they wrote have a real impact on the reader ; I mean that you can pratically feel what the author wrote because you undserstand that it’s something really personal and that he puts his real feelings on it.

By the way, I’m still convinced that Kerouac is one of my favourite author with the whole Beat Generation because they have a very specific style that create a whole different atmosphere from books that we know.

Sherlock Holmes

Sherlock Holmes  made his first appearance in the novel « A Study in Scarlet » written by the author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and appeared in 1887.

The character of Sherlock Holmes still gives nowadays an iconic interest in the genre of English literature, thanks to his tactical sense and his logical reasoning that makes him unique in its kind. Plus, the Sherlock Holmes’s universe has also made famous John Watson, the assistant of Sherlock with a cult phrase pronounced, or rather « would have been » pronounced by Sherlock Holmes : « Elementary, my dear Watson« . It’s important to notice that this phrase, known by all, is not really true in itself. To say, one of the closest novel written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle‘s « The Adventure of the Crooked Man », presents this sentence in the following dialog quoted directly from the book :

“Excellent!” I cried.

Elementary,”

Then, we can say that the character of Sherlock Holmes was so successful that allowed it to be transcribed through time, in various books, films and cartoons. (for example, the « Detective Conan« )

Tom Sawyer in the japanese culture

You know Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain ? Here I’m going to talk about Le nouveau Tom Sawyer , a recent manga published in 2014 , by the editor KOMMIKU in France.

I’ve discovered this adaptation one month ago, and some references can be seen. But for me, it’s a bad adaptation. Why ?
Save for the character and the fact he is resourceful and adventurous , the similarity stops here. There aren’t enough mystery and adventures to be a good adaptation from the work of Mark Twain. There isn’t a real main theme.

My point of view about this work is that I can’t call this an adaptation. It’s better to say that the manga is inspired by the novel of Mark Twain.
Nevertheless, connoisseur of manga can be interested by this !

« Bridget Jones’s Diary » by Helen Fielding

I would  like to speak to you about the novel « Bridget Jones’s Diary » writing by Helen Fielding in 1996. Helen Fielding is a famous novelist in England which is especially known for the novel that I will speak to you. This novel is rather ironic, it tells the story of an unmarried young woman who works in a company newsletter. The main character, Bridget Jones, tells his story as if she wrote a diary. She seeks the prince charming who will change his life, his vision on itself and on the world.
This novel was adapted out of film by the English director Beeban Kidron who made film comic.

« The Chimney Sweeper », William Blake

« The Chimney Sweeper » is the title of two poems by William Blake. « Songs of innocence » was published in 1789 and « Songs of Experience » in 1794.
Its theme is a period around the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th century during which boys from 4 to 5 years old were sold to clean chimneys because of their small smize. These children were oppressed and had shortened existence but it used to be accepted troughout the society.
In his poems Blake denounces the horror of such working and living conditions which often lead to death.

When my mother died I was very young,
And my father sold me while yet my tongue
Could scarcely cry  » ‘weep! ‘weep! ‘weep! ‘weep! »
So your chimneys I sweep & in soot I sleep.

There’s little Tom Dacre, who cried when his head
That curled like a lamb’s back, was shaved, so I said,
« Hush, Tom! never mind it, for when your head’s bare,
You know that the soot cannot spoil your white hair. »

And so he was quiet, & that very night,
As Tom was a-sleeping he had such a sight!
That thousands of sweepers, Dick, Joe, Ned, & Jack,
Were all of them locked up in coffins of black;

And by came an Angel who had a bright key,
And he opened the coffins & set them all free;
Then down a green plain, leaping, laughing they run,
And wash in a river and shine in the Sun.

Then naked & white, all their bags left behind,
They rise upon clouds, and sport in the wind.
And the Angel told Tom, if he’d be a good boy,
He’d have God for his father & never want joy.

And so Tom awoke; and we rose in the dark
And got with our bags & our brushes to work.
Though the morning was cold, Tom was happy & warm;
So if all do their duty, they need not fear harm.

« Songs of innocence », 1789

In this first poem, especially in the three last stanzas the atmosphere is one surrounded by pleasant visions. (« green plain », « Shine in the Sun », « They rise upon clouds » … etc) despite the atual seriousness of the situation the kids found themselves into. Although it becomes understandable if you make the hypothesis that in this poem the narrator is a child whose naivety makes him believe there is hope. This guess seems even more obvious when you look carefully at the two first stanzas in which the way of expression is the one of a child.

A little black thing among the snow,
Crying « weep! ‘weep! » in notes of woe!
« Where are thy father and mother? say? »
« They are both gone up to the church to pray.

Because I was happy upon the heath,
And smil’d among the winter’s snow,
They clothed me in the clothes of death,
And taught me to sing the notes of woe.

And because I am happy and dance and sing,
They think they have done me no injury,
And are gone to praise God and his Priest and King,
Who make up a heaven of our misery. »

« Songs of experience », 1794

However in this second poem, the tone is very different. Now the narrator is an adult who has understood the hopelessness of the situation and thinks about his parents and their attitude towards the situation. According to him, they think they didn’t hurt him because he seems to be alright but for him what they did lead him to certain death (« They clothes me in the clothes of death ») which might be the only path to escape. (« God and his priest and king, Who make up a heaven of our misery »).

The Unabridged Journal of Sylvia Plath

In class we worked on The Unabriged Journal of Sylvia Plath, it’s an autobiography. At the beginning of the extract the author is in Benidorm, in Spain, during her honeymoon with her husband. Her husband is also a writer, so writing is the center of their relationship, we can see that Sylvia admires her husband and they seems to leave in a perfect harmony. It gives to Sylvia much energy and she has many projects. Her life seems to be perfect now she is married. Then it’s very strange because just a few hours after, we feel that something has happened, she seems to be lost and there is no more harmony. It’s very surprising because suddenly it’s as if everything around her has changed. We can see that the author souffers probably from psychological instability and we know that she commited suicide. I found this extract very interesting and I like autobiographies because we learn lot of things about authors, but in this case I think it’s different because the journal was published after Sylvia Plath’s death and we don’t know if she would have agreed to publish it. And you, what do you think about autobiographical novel ?

San-Antonio

San-Antonio is is both a character invented by Fréderic Dard and one of the numerous pseudonyms of him. He wrote 175 novel under this name as if his charater, who speak at the first person narrativ, had written his own history.

San-Antonio is supposed to be a police commissioner who investigates strage cases, often with is coarse acolyte Bérurier. Written as if the commissioner have been telling oraly his adventures, those novels are full of humor, in the typical way of Frédéric Dard: rude, full of contrepetrie, anglisism, catachresis and neologism. The author even said that he made his entire career like a writter with only 300 words and he invented all the others.

I would like to give you my favorite extract and, as Dard is a french writter, everybody will understand: it’s in french :

San-Antonio; Tout le plaisir est pour moi

With this particular sense of humor, the series of San-Antonio please to a large public by mitigate the usual darkness that reign in the atmophere of thrillers. All the plots are more fussy than the one before but it is really easy to read and so fun that it is always a pleasure!

Personaly, I think that the two best are Tout le plaisir est pour moi and Salut, mon pope! .

You should give it a look, I am pretty sure that you will like it, even if reading is absolutly not your cup of tea!

Cast Away

Today i’m going to speak about Cast Away who is a adventure drama film directed by Robert Zemeckis. In this film, Chuck Noland (Tom Hanks) a FedEx employee, is stranded on an uninhabited island and tries to survive after his plane crashed in the South Pacific. This film is very interesting because we really share the routine of the character on the island, as his deceptions, his daily problems… Despite those negatives points, there is funny moments as when Chuck talks to Wilson a volley-ball. Wilson is Chuck Noland’s personified friend. In my opinion « Cast Away » is a really good film, because we can seen the character’s evolution all along the story: at the beginning we have a poor, lonely characters who is overtaken by the events he lives. And at the end we have a little bit foolish character (who has a volley-ball as partner of island’s escape). And to finish I think this story is a readaptation of « Robinson Crusoe », indeed Tom Hanks reminds us a modern version of Robinson. I advice this film !

The diary of a young girl, Anne Frank

This book was written by Anne Frank, a thirteen years old Jewish girl.                             In 1942, Anne and her family ran their home in Holland to go to hide, during the Nazi occupation.                                                                                                                            For the next two years, they lived in an old building, more specifically in a « Secret Annexe », and Anne started a diary on 12 June 1942 and she stopped writing it on August 1st 1944. She died of typhoid at Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in March 1945.                                                                                                                                            His father, Otto Frank, the only survivor, decided to publish the diary of his daughter.

This diary tells about their impressions, their experiences during this difficult period.     It’s a testament of human spirit.                                                                                          It is important to say that this book was translated in 70 languages, published all around the world because this testimony is the most moving about the everyday life of a Jewish family during the Nazi occupation.

Steamboat Willie by Disney

Walt Disney is the famous american cartoonist well-known for his famous character Mickey Mouse. And do you know one of the first animated short films where appears Mickey Mouse ?

It’s a matter of Steamboat Willie. Thus, it’s on the first short animated by Disney. It was produced in black and white by Walt Disney Studios in 1928. It was the third of Mickey’s films to be produced. This cartoon is considered as the begining of Mickey Mouse and her girlfriend Minnie.

This animated short film was considered as the film marking the Mickey’s Mouse birth and also the first cartoon with synchronized sound. We must know that at this time it was still the first beginnings of cartoon.

Disney was also knew for his others animated short films like Alice Comedies, Osawald the Lucky Rabbit, Silly Symphonies and of course his animated full-length movies whose the first was Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs in 1937, Pinocchio, ect…

The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz by L.Frank Baum

Lyman Frank Baum is an amercian writer of the 20’s century mostly known for his children’s books. He had writen in 1900 a novel intitled The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz which tells the story of Dorothee a young girl who lives in Kansas and who is taken away with is house by a tornado and arrived in a wonderful country called Oz. She have to find a wizard to come back home in Kansas. It’s quiet an initiatory journey in a way because the character, Dorothee, is taken to an unknown place and she have to face many dificulties in the aim of returning home.

This story has been adapted on screen in 1939 into a musical directed by Victor Fleming staring with Judy Garland, Ray Bolger, Bert Lahr… This movie had totally take inspiration into the novel.

There is also a new adaptation of it that had been done quiet recently and which is a prequel of the first movie and novel. It’s intitled Oz, the Great and Powerful and had been directed by Sam Raimi. The four principal characters are interpreted by James Franco, Michelle Williams, Mila Kunis and Rachelle Weisz.

I have seen both of those movies and I like both of them because they are actually very different, the first is a singing movie and it looks to be especially made for a children’s audience but in the second the director has played on the special effects to give a beautiful image.

The possession

The film  is a Canadian-American horror film directed by Ole Bornedal, released in 2012.

Clyde and Stephanie Brenek see no reason to worry when their youngest daughter Emily becomes strangely obsessed with a small wooden box purchased at a garage sale. But soon, his behavior becomes more aggressive and suspicious father the presence of a malevolent force around him. He then discovers that the box was created to contain a dybbuk, a spirit that inhabits and ultimately devours its human host.

The film is pulled on a « real- true story »…                                                                             This wooden chest gave him the name « dybbuk ». It was for a Polish family and after giving from hand to hand, it was won at auction by Kewin Mannis in 2003. The trunk contained a lot of personal items. According Mannis, it would have taken violent nightmares like the former owners of the dybbuk, each of which also reported that they felt a cat urine odor or jasmine flower near the trunk. Iosif Neitzke was the last person has won this auction mysterious wooden box. The dybbuk was the cause of his health problems (unexplained hair loss, hives, cough with bleeding welts from head to foot). Neitzke kept a blog where he told all his misadventures, a blog to it by a certain Jason Haxton who decided one day to help Neitzke by using a rabbi to re-seal the evil spirit in the trunk. Apparently successful, Haxton has decided to hide the dybbuk we never find him.
The story is not insane, we stay on the beaten track . It’s a pleasant film that will appreciate as well at home to pass the time I think the big screen bringing nothing here. We are far from the level of intensity of classic adjusted to the millimeter. A feature that works on the Paranormal activity series of flower beds with a small budget ($ 14 million) for a very good return on investment.
The film is good and meets our expectations, because you risk to feel uncomfortable in front of some scenes.

Sylvia by Christine Jeffs (2003)

This movie shows the story of the famous writer : Sylvia Plath and her husband Ted Hugues. It begins when the author meets her husband and it finish by the Sylvia’s suicide. It’s a beautiful movie I have seen it and I recommend it (in particular to understand our text in class).

Fight Club by David Fincher

I recently watched this movie (yesterday) and I’m still shocked by the incredible plot !

Don’t worry I’ll not spoil the story but I’ll try to explain in the better way…

The narrator and main character (Edward Norton) is a man who live alone, sleep alone in spite of his numerous insomnia, who work alone, eat alone just like a lot of people in the world. After participating in several anonymous meeting to help peolple who suffre from a cancer, a tuberculosis or others serious diseases, he finally meets Tyler (Brad Pitt): a handsome man, clever, beautiful, nonconformist and rebel. Thanks to him he will learn to live instead of just exist as a pawn of the society. They will creat the « Fitgh Club » an illegal club of boxing.

But at a moment, this odd association will turn into a kind of terrorist activities…

Until which point this story will ended ?

Suspense…

I really advise you to watch this movie, the film technics are just incredibly amazing and the actors play in a way I never seen before. David Fincher is definitly a God of cinema for my opinion !

Jane Eyre

Jane Eyre is a novel writed by Charlotte Bronte, an english writter. This novel is considered as a biography thank to many elements of Jane’life are similar to life’s author (for example presence of boarding-school fairly strict and cold that’s shows hardness life’s author etc…). Indeed , this novel is at « half-fictive » but Jane Eyre (even if she embody as it were Charlotte Bronte) is an interesting character who the reader can clearly observed the progression according to the reading. She leave her family to live her own life without imprisonment , fall in love and make her own choice.

Pre-Raphaelite and Fading away by Henry Peach Robinson

The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood was a group of poets, painters and critics founded in 1848. This artistic movement was created in United Kingdom and his members had a moral goal through their work. Thus they wanted to influence the morals of their society particularly in the XIXth century with the industrial revolution. The characteristics of the Pre-Raphaelite works is the realism with many details and for paintings the bright colours. The Pre-Raphaelites are inspired by the Italian work of the XVth century and their favourite subjects are the Middle Age, the biblical themes, the nature, literature and poetry.

Henry Peach Robinson (1830-1901) was an English photographer. He used combination printing (a kind of photomontage) and his work is pictorialist. He debated about the legitimacy of art photography and was a member of the Royal Photographic Society. Robinson had a strong relation with the painting: many times he employed painted background in front of which he placed his models. « Fading Away » is one of his most popular picture, created in 1858 during his Pre-Raphaelite phase. This work was linked to an other work « She never told her love » which hint at Shakespeare; and because it’s represented the same young died woman, we can supposed that she dying of tuberculosis or of a broken heart. The technique used for « fading away » by Robinson  is the combination of five negatives. The image is built and represented the reality of death. The composition is simple but it permitted to mark better the spectator. This work is a family tragedy, we are into the intimate of this family and we are focused on the died body so it has a morbid aspect too. It’s why when Robinson published this photography, he scandalized the press.

Driven To Tears

Hello !

I was listening music and I discovered a good song ! It’s « Driven To Tears », the first protest song of The Police. Indeed, at the beginning this music was created by the group, and then Sting sang the song again. This song is about the famine in the Biafra*, in which many children died. The theme of the song is the gap between rich and poor.

Description de cette image, également commentée ci-après

The Biafra is here 🙂

Lyrics:

How can you say that you’re not responsible?
What does it have to do with me?
What is my reaction, what should it be?
Confronted by this latest atrocity

Driven to tears

Hide my face in my hands, shame wells in my throat
My comfortable existance is reduced to a shallow meaningless party
Seems that when some innocent die
All we can offer them is a page in a some magazine
Too many cameras and not enough food
‘Cos this is what we’ve seen

Driven to tears

Protest is futile, nothing seems to get through
What’s to become of our world, who knows what to do

Driven to tears

The Iron Lady

The Iron Lady

The Iron Lady is a British-French biopic directed by Phyllida Lloyd dedicated to Margaret Thatcher and released in the United Kingdom on 16 December 2011.

Throughout the film, we have Margaret Thatcher’s point of view. With Alzheimer’s disease, she is confused and remembers moments of her life. There is a cross editing between the present, where she is eighty years old and memories from her youth to her resignation as Prime Minister. This film is interesting because it gives us a different perspective on it, enough staff, which allows us to approach this controversial figure in a more human way and understand why one gives her the nickname Iron Lady (symbol of firmness). However, this film also enables us to know her intimate life and not stop at the image she gave as Prime Minister. Through her point of view, we understand the nature of her struggle: the daughter of a grocer (from a popular middle), she fought all her life to climb the social ladder and engage in politics. She is the only woman on the head of the Conservative Party and who has been Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, making it the longest uninterrupted term. The film reveals the origin of her conservative convictions, which came in part from her father. Margaret Thatcher is often represented as an authoritarian political figure, which doesn’t take into account public opinion, whereas this film presents this woman as a mother, wife, having weaknesses. For example, we can notice that she may be too ambitious and she was not really present for her children and her hustband. Finally, early in the film, we see a book she signs, which is her autobiography.

It would be interesting to compare her vision of her career in her autobiography with the vision offered by this film. I suggest you to watch it!

Lord of the flies an allegory of natural condition of mankind imagined by Hobbes?

https://encyclopedieonline.files.wordpress.com/2012/05/captura-de-tela-2012-05-13-c3a0s-14-03-051.png?w=620

Thomas Hobbes was an English philosopher of the 17th century. Nowadays, he is especially known for his works on political philosophy. Indeed, he thought about a state of nature which shows the natural condition of mankind to understand human nature. I don’t know if it’s also your case, but, when I read Lord of the flies, written by Golding, I thought that it is a great illustration of the Hobbes’s idea, developed in the Leviathan, published in 1651. In this work, Hobbes asserts that humans are naturally equal but they wants to assert their power on the other humans. Thus, in this state, there is “a war of all against all.” For Hobbes, this state is unlivable: there is an permanent insecurity.  Well, when it became too much to bear, humans accede to a social contract. They give their powers to one person in exchange for their security. For Hobbes, it’s the way chose civil society was established.

In Lord of the flies, written by Golding and published in 1954, some children were obliged to live in a deserted island where they must pull through by themselves and return to the “natural condition of mankind”.  At the beginning, they managed to stay civilized. Then, the things go wrong and they have a war, which result in two deaths. In this story, the author wanted to show the true face of human and the primitive signs that can come back at any time. Even they had enough education to know how they must have acted, they didn’t act as civilized children. As we have seen in the extract we have studied, they are rescued by the arrival of the officer which symbolizes authority and civilized world. I think, but it’s my personal interpretation, that William Golding should have read the Leviathan by Hobbes and wanted to show that the dreadful human nature must be avoided only by the presence of authority. However, it can come back at any time, above all when there are not political authorities or a civilized structure. Well, I think that Lord of the flies is a good illustration of the Hobbes’s idea concerning human nature. However, the existence of a state of nature has interested a lot of philosophers of the 17th century such as Rousseau or Locke who had not the same idea of human nature and were not really agree with Hobbes. Aristotle said that “man is a political animal.” Well, are men obliged to live in society? If they are left alone in a deserted island, are they capable of pulling through?

It’s in watching TV it falls on the presentation of Professor Leduc, in which he recognizes Mr. Gougne. Nicolas understands that there was a relationship between this encyclopedia and the vanishing of his parents, and has the intuition that they are still alive; So he ran away from the orphanage to join them. He returns to his house and resolves the riddle about the triangle and the matches. Late, we discover all people who are down into the cellar are alive. They are in this room..jained, which is actually a former Protestant hidden, buried underground. We discover that the device preventing the return was set up by Jonathan, under the direction of Edmond Wells, who also developed a machine to understand and communicate with ants, in the form of a mini robot ant, and with the surname of Dr. Livingstone. A colony of eighteen millions of ants lives above them, the city of Bel-o-kan, with which they communicate used this gadget.

The other side, I mean about the ants, we discover how they do to protect their anthill.  Ants finally reached the world of « guardians of the end of the world »(Their living dreaming place) seems to them as exotic. It’s really difficult to sum up beacause, there are many and many adventures as Ants wars, nuptial flights, beetle attack and the main adventure: the secret weapon of the enemy ants armies (that decimated an numerous group of ants in less than 2 seconds)

I advise you this book.. In fact, this trilogy.

Into the Woods is an american musical movie directed by Rob Marshall in 2014. It is an adaptation of a 1986 homonymous musical by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine.

All these components are used for doing a magic potion which returns beauty and youth’s witch.

All these characters have a dream : Cinderella wants to go to ball, Rapunzel hopes for going out of her tower, Jack wants to keep his cow and discover the world, the Red Riding Hood desires to see her grandmother, the baker wants to have a child.

Wishes are granted but there are consequences…

This movie received the American Film Institute Awards 2014.

Have you ever seen this film?

American Sniper

American Sniper is an American war film directed by Clint Eastwood and released in 2015. It is the adaptation of the homonymous autobiography US sniper and former member of the SEALs Chris Kyle.

That’s the story of man named Chris Kyle, Sniper Navy SEAL who is sent to Iraq for one purpose: to protect his comrades. His art fire saves countless lives on the battlefield, while the tales of his exploits multiply, he earned the nickname « The Legend ». However, his reputation spreads beyond enemy lines, so that his head is a price and it becomes a prime target for insurgents. Despite the danger, and anxiety in which his family lives, Chris participates in four decisive battles of the most terrible war in Iraq, winning as well as the living embodiment of the motto of the SEAL: « No quarter! « But returning home, Chris realizes that he can not return to normal life.

For me, this is a beautiful movie which create a lot of emotions to the spectator. This movie really touched me. Clint Eastwood is primarily based its mastery of staging. I really recommended this movie for everyone! it is very touching but also very rewarding.

The Long Walk By Stephen King

Stephen King published this novel in 1979 under the pseudonym Richard Bachman wich is a pseudonym that he used frequently.

In this novel we follow the main character called Garraty. He participates to a competition called « The Walk » where the competitors, named « Walkers », must walk as long as possible and they must maintain their speed above four miles per hour, after three warnings a Walker who doesn’t follow the rules is killed.

So we follow the Walkers in an adventure full of actions and suspense where the main characters are surrounded by mysterious Walkers that readers will discover throughout the novel. We also follow the evolutions of the health, physical or mental of Walkers that leads to a lot of drama because lives are at stakes.

This a very good novel very well written, the story never became boring and always keeps the focus of the reader with a writing very effective. According to the American Library Association, it is one of the best book for teenage readers published between 1966 and 2000. I liked it and I recommend you this novel.

Seuls

It’s a comic written by Fabien Vehlmann and draw by Bruno Gazzotti. It’s published since 2006 and today there are eight volumes we can buy.

The story is about five children who woke up a day and they are alone in their town : Fortville.

-The first character we discovered is Yvan who is 9 years old. He is intelligent, a little crazy (sometimes he thinks he is God) and he is a little coward and at the same time courageous.

-The second character is Leïla, she is 11 years old. She is a tomboy because she loves mechanic but she is very energical and optimist. She never panic and is always realistic.

-The third is Camille who is 8 years old. She is the perfect little girl who works hard for school, very wise, she understand directly the situation but sometimes she is naive.

-There is after, Terry who is the younger (5 years old) he is attachant but also naive and extrem in his reactions and feelings. He just lives to play with his toys, but he is also very courageous.

-The last one is the older (15 years old) Dodji. He is the « leader » at the beginning because of his age. He is ingenious and he is never afraid by anything, but he is also nervous.

So this is the band of five.

During these eight volumes, there happening a lot of adventures of these five kids, like fight again monkeys or meet other children. But during this time there are a lot of mysteries without answers like why them, what happens in this town and the adults.

It’s really difficult to admit these kids do all that like fight and struggle alone or drive a bus because they are just children. And we watch them grow up. But I really like this comic because mysteries are very interresting. And more there are volumes, more we understand with them what it is happening and what happens. The most difficult to admit is that they are very young but they do everything with a lot of realism, they think a lot and do choices sometimes hard. I forgot sometimes they’re children because they knew where they’re gone and give the impression to be tennagers, they’re really mature.

The fifth first volumes gone to be adapted on movie, I really want to know if it’s gone to be great as the comic.

It’s the only comic I read and I advise you to do the same if you like fantastic.

There is also a website and I found it funny :http://www.seuls-labd.com/

Dr. Moreau’s island

Edward Prendick is the only survivor of a shipwreck, rescued by Montgomery, who’s a passenger on a ship carrying animals. Montgomery is the assistant of Dr. Moreau, a crazy scientist. Prendick discovers that during the past ten years, the two men are experimenting on animals, performing transplants and surgery to make them act like humain being (talk & walk). The « beast-men » live in a village & obey to « the Law » which forbidden animal behavior & is forcing the animals to look up at Moreau, who they call  » Master « .

Rules : -Do not walk on fours.

            -Do not lick to drink.

-Do not eat meat or fish.

            -Do not scratch trees.

            -Do not chase other men.

But Prendick discovers that some creatures don’t respect it & are eating rabbits. The murder of Dr. Moreau is done by a beast, a man half puma. Montgomery is then killed and Prendick, now alone with the creatures, will manage to gain respect. He finally manages to escape on a boat & return to England. But traumatized by the experience, he continues to see the « ghost » of Moreau’s monsters in the cities.

I read this book about 3 years ago & loved it; I can’t say why, it’s probably my psycopathe side’s talking. But it’s also probably because it’s an extraordinary story that brings admiration & a little bit of fear & disgust. Now with the evolution of science & medicine, why would it be not possible to do the same thing?

Book of Haïkus, by Jack Kerouac

Book of Haïkus is a collection of Haïkus poetry by Jack Kerouac.

Arrow

« Arrow » is a American serie, created in 2012 by Andrew Kreisberg,Greg Berlanti and Marc Guggenheim and diffused on TF1 in 2014.

In this serie, we can follow the adventures of a billionaire called Oliver Queen, allias «The Arrow». This character is based on the DC Comics’s Super Hero Green Arrow.

Oliver Queen a billionaire, playboy and selfish man. He’s living in Starling City. (a ficticious city created by DC Comics)

But one day, when he was on a boat with his father and his lover, the sister of his fiancée, he was shipwrecked. On a lifeboat, his father told to him that he have failed their city and gave to him a notebook, then he suicides.

After that Oliver arrived on an island and spend 5 years alone. During this time, he learn how to fight and how to use a bow.

He fand a way to go home, and he have only one goal, to « save his city ».

To do this he «became someone else, something else». He became the arrow and armed with a bow, he tracks all the bad peoples who makes illegual money and he gives their fortune to poor, like a modern Robin Hood.

Because this serie is created by DC Comics we can see many many other super heroes too.

DC Comics created many other interesting series like « Constantine » « Gotham » , « The Flash » or films like « Man Of Steal »

Arrow respects the spirit of the comic book, I advise this serie that is a good mix between action, romance and adventure.

Da Vinci Code

The Da Vinci Code is a science fiction novel written by Dan Brown in 2003.  This is a best seller so the book has sold 86 million copies all over the world. A film adaptation was released in 2006 by Ron Howard.

This is the story of Robert Langdon an american who is involved in the murder of Jacques Sauniere against (who worked at the Louvre) his will. Langdon is accused because before dying Sauniere wrote on the ground « P.S find Robert Langdon ». The only personn who belienves in Langdon’s innocence is Sophie Neveu (granddaughter of Sauniere). She thinks that her grandfather message is intended for her and Langdon can help her to understand it. In return she helps him to escape the police comissioner Fache.
The central theme of the story is the secret struggle between the leadership of the Roman Catholic Church and the Priory of Sion (the object of this struggle is the parternity of Christ).

This is an interesting story where the plot is well constructed and it si true that it is difficult to discern the historical and truethful either from fiction

Looking Backward

Looking Backward is an utopian science fiction novel by Edward Bellamy published in 1888. It is translated into french as « 100 ans après ou l’an 2000  »

The novel tells the story of Julian West (a young American)  in Boston in 2000. He says that he was born in 1857. He wakes up in M.Leete’s house (who find it under his house) because he falls into a deep, hypnosis-induced sleep in1887 because of the fire in Julian’s house. So he wakes up one hundred and thirteen years later. But M.Leete learn him that the labor problem disappeared and the nation proposed a socialist solution of a nationalisation of all industry, the use of an « industrial army » to organize production (people have to work from 21 to 45 years).

Money doesn’t exist anymore and the state supplies people : the goods of society are equally distributed to thecitizens. Everyone has the same income even invalid and prisons have become hospitals.

The bulk of the novel is a dialogue between Julian and M.Leete.

This book is more a comparison between actual economic and technological developments.

Why not some poetry?

Hi everybody!

Yesterday I was looking for a new idea to make an article and… I was not very inspired. So, to change with books or movies, I would like to talk about the poetry, which is a similar field but not totally the same as literature.
I was surfing on the net when I fell on a site with only english poems. Of course, you can improve your english language thanks to videos on the net, poadcasts [..] which are less pain than the reading ahah!

If some of you are courageous, you could try to read these poems, which are very useful to bring us some new words (yes, words which are employed on the poetry field are quiet different!)

Well, if i should recommand you someone, it would be John Milton, who is the creator of many epic poems!

The Book of Joe by Jonathan Tropper

The Book of Joe is a book wrote by Jonathan Tropper and it was published in 2006. I am going to make you a little summary of this novel :

On the first hand, Joe Goffman has everything he wants : a perfect flat in the best Manhattan districts, a lot of sentimental adventures, a beautiful car and to much dollars. This young author found succes very fast with his first best seller, Bush Falls.

For write this novel he was directly inspired by his teen is a city in the Connecticut and his best seller ridicules the mores of province of his former citizens. In this book, he denounces their hypocrisy, their narrow-mindedness and their depravities. But one day, he must come back to Bush Falls because of his hill father. He is confronted face to his memories… On his own against all the city and his past, Joe will be obliged to find his place…

This work is the Joe’s return story in his teen city after 17 years of absence…

I’ve read this book and I really found it interesting ! If I can give you a tip, you should read it ! And you ? Do you know this writer or this novel ?

The Long walk by Stephen King

Today I would like to tell you what The Long Walk is. It’s a novel by Stephen King published in 1979 which shows a near future where there is a Selective Service each year : one hundred of young men (18 years old or less) must go from the State of Maine to the South. The Long Walk’s winner will receive what he wants from this day to his death. The long walk’s rules are easy : no contact with the others walkers, don’t deflect of the planned road and you can’t stop. The walkers who stop once receive an advertissement. The walkers can receive three advertissements and after, they are killed.

100 walkers, 1 winner and 99 losers… That is the hard law of the Long Walk, a perverse entertainment. In his novel, Stephen King denounce the possible reality TV drifts with a lot of ferocity. What has marked me the most is the fact that the author lets us identify us to the characters : we can see all the complexity of the characters psychology. Then, every character’s reactions about the walk and facing death.

In his novel, there are a lot of suspens, horror and anxiety. Moreover, dialogues are reals and sometimes they are comics.

This novel is, in my opinion, a real masterpiece. And you ? Have you already read this novel ? What do you think about it ?

Broken Arrow

I would like you to see the film Broken Arrow directed by Delmer Daves in 1950 because it’s really a beautiful film on a black period in the USA History.
It is inspired from a novel written by Elliott Arnold, moreover this is a true story that occurred in 1870.
In 1870, Jeffords, after a demobilization, was called to Tucson to be the superintendent of a mail line that later became a part of the famous Pony Express system. After some of his mail riders were killed by Apaches, he rode alone  into the camp of Cochise to parley, without arms and a white flag in his hand . This bravery  impressed the chief so much that he became friend and blood brother to Jeffords, accepting that his mail riders crossed the area safely.
James Stewart embodied Tom Jeffords and Jeff Chandler Cochise. The film was shot in Sedona, the famous area in Arizona where numerous Hollywood’s films were shot because of the beauty of its red rocks.
But the true story took place further south in the Dragoon mountains where Cochise, the famous Apache war chief lived.
 Broken arrow
James Stewart’s voice over introduces the film. He explains that he was prospecting for gold when suddenly some buzzards circling in the sky suggested him that there was some trouble in store.
These first shots are very interesting. Let’s go and compare the 4th  and the 8th :
in the 4th one, Tom Jeffords on his horse in the foreground is placed over the Native who is seen as a victim. This is a high angle shot, whereas in the 8th one the Native is over Tom Jeffords and is seen through a low angle shot. Paradoxically Tom Jeffords doesn’t take advantage of his superiority in the 4th shot and decides to attend the young Native who is wounded on his back (that underlines how cowardly those who tried to kill him were…) .
Paradoxically the young Native American doesn’t take advantage of his superiority in the 8th shot and decides to give Tom Jeffords a gift gratefully and to protect him against his own tribe.
It illustrates very well how the film is going to deal with the birth of an incredible friendship between Tom Jeffords and the Apaches.
Tom Jeffords noticed that the Native Americans were generous, grateful, loyal, that they had the sense of honor,  that they indeed shared very important values with Tom Jeffords
Unfortunately all American people were not like Tom Jeffords at that time, and Delmer Daves definitely wanted to pay  tribute to this man who tried to understand Native Americans.

Lord of the Flies

In class we saw the film Lord of the Flies, it was the first time I saw it and I loved it.

It tells the story of boys who survived a plane crash. They are on an island and they try to survive but one of the boys, Jack, decide to going it alone and create a rival camp. Then there is a terrible battle between Jack’s camp and Ralph’s camp, two children are killed. I found this film very interesting, because for me it shows us that we keep in us a strong survival instinct, and I think we have now idea how we would react in such a situation. Gradually in the film the children find their primitive instinct, they just want to survive. I think that even if some scenes may « shock » us, it is very realistic and it reminds us that we are « animals » and we could probably do a lot of things to survive. It is, for me, a very good movie !

LOST

I want to talk about Lost, an american TV series.

Flight 815 of Oceania crashes on a tropical island in the Pacific. We follow the story of the survivors who discovered that this island was the scene of a scientific project named Dharma. On this Island there are unknown monsters, hostile savages and intense magnetic activity, etc … The survivors will then organize and live together in peace.

I chose to talk about Lost because I think it would be interresting to compare with Lord of the Flies. I have seen some part of the series and I will finish it and I recommend it!

Movies of january!

In january, I love discovering new movies mainly influenced by the nominations of ceremonies like the Oscars or the Golden Globes. Even if i was extremely disappointed by the Cesars’ nominations in France this year, a lots of films teased my curiosity in this begining of the year. I choose to talk about my two main crushes at the moment:

  • When I heard that the new movie with Benedict Cumberbatch received numerous nominations at the Oscars, I was even more excited to see The Imitation Game. Mr Cumberbatch play the role of Alan Turing, the mathematician who enabled the Allies to defeat the Nazis during the second world war by decrypting a lots of messages written by the Germans. In addition to this incredible story, we can see the position of a man like Alan Turing (who is homosexual) in the english’s society after the war. I’m a huge fan of Benedict Cumberbatch and i have to say that his performance in this film is brilliant, as much as Keira Knightley ( however I am not very impressed by her usual performances).

  • An another movie which is more confidential but also stunning: Whiplash, directed by Damien Chazelle, tells the story of a nineteen-year-old boy who wants to become an icon of Jazz as a drummer. I think it’s the movie to see for jazz fans or just for people who love music and who actually play an instrument because Whiplash is a beautiful illustration of the musician’s work. For now, this movie is my favorite in the race for the award for best picture.

These are just quick reviews of two movies which really Worth the view: I share with you the trailers, in case you want to see what it looks like, and if you have already seen one of these movies are both, don’t hesitate to give your opinion.

The Leftovers

The Leftovers is an American novel published in 2013 by Tom Perrotta and which knows a TV adaptation in Canada on HBO.

The story begins in Mapleton, in october 14th, a little American town three years after the the « Rapture ». The « Rapturet » the disappearance of people on the earth, about two percent. And the title of this novel shows the interest for « the leftovers », those still present.

The novel are focused on the Garvey’s, who are spared by the « Rapture,  and follow their reaction about the « Ravissement ». All have a different reaction, the mother, Laurie, adheres to a sect « Guilty Survivors » who fight against the forget and who doing a vow of silence. Tom, the son, leave his college to rejoin a mystical sect for « save the world ». Jill , his sister, go astray from High School and sink alcohol and drugs. Kevin, the father, search a means to have a normal life, he become mayor and he must to manage the problems of « Rapture ».

All seek to understand and question on the reason of the ‘Rapture ». how survive with the guilt of being a survivor ? Why them and not me ? How continue to live ? The psychological novel show the human mechanism to fight against the unacceptable. we follow the characters with their personality and how they face up to these events.

The atmosphere of the novel is heavy and oppressive, the psychology of the characters are very realistic, even if this novel there aren’t much action, it’s a good psychological novel.

The TV adaptation are co-written by Tom Perrotta, the main character is Justin Theroux (The Father) and Amy Brenneman (the mother). The adaptation is a success, and loyal to the novel.

Terrorist – John Updike

I recently discovered a book by an American author about terrorism.

About the auhor : John Updike was born in 1932 in Pennsylvania. Author of fifty-four books, he has stopped seeing his works awarded since the publication of his first novel in 1958

»Terrorist » is one of many novel following the attacks of 11 September 2001.

The story takes place un New Prospect, a poo suburb close to Manhattan. Ahmad Mulloy, a young talented high school, son of an Aymeric-Irish and abandoned by his Egyptian’s father, becomes a fanatic Islamist under the influence of the local imam.
His guidance conselor will try to away from it and to enroll in University. But other characters will try to handle him. What will be the choice of Ahmad ?

John Updike, with his distaste of our time and his misanthropy, give us a portrait of a distraught america faced with fundamentalist Islam.

I haven’t read this book yet but it’s interresting. I recommend it !

Millenium

Millenium is a « swedo-danish » thriller movie directed by Niels Arden Oplev and released in 2009. That’s an adaptation from the Millenium trilogy of Stieg Larsson.

Mikael Blomkvist is the redactor of Millenium an investigation and social paper news. One day a man contact him about an inquire given up 40 years ago. With Lisbeth Salander a young rebel orphan woman but clever and brilliant, he tries to figure out the inquire and stop the murderer.

That’s a very good thriller full of suspense with originals characters.

The Red Violin

The Red Violin is an italian-english-canadian drama film directed by François Girard. The story talks about a violinmaker called Nicolo Busotti who finished a violin in 1681. He intends to give this violin to his son who will be born. Unfortunately, his wife Anna dies with the baby during labour. Nicolo falls into a deep sadness and  decides  to varnish his violin with the blood of his dead wife. Thus, the soul of his wife will accompany the destiny of this instrument. During all the film, the violin travels through time from hand to hand to various musicians. Thereafter, in 1997, the violin will be to put up for auction in a company in Montréal. I find it’s a great film with an interesting story and good musical pièces.

Animal Farm – Animation !

Last year I’saw the movie entitled « Animal Farm », adaptation from the novel with the same name, by George Orwell. Here, I’m going to talk about the animation adapted from this novel.

It’s a full-lenght film directed by John Halas and Joy Batchelor, released in 1954. It’s a British animation known to be the first full-lenght film released. Even if it’s an adaptation, it’s not the children who are targeted, because of the serious and the ethical of the story. This one talks about the denounciation of the totalitarium regim, using animals, like in fables of Jean de La Fontaine.

Personally, I haven’t seen this adaptation, but I’ll try to watch it ! And you, have you seen it ?

The 100

The 100 is a TV show directed by Jason Rothenberg last year. This series tells the story of around 300 people who survived after a third world war. They took refuge in a space shuttle for years since the Earth was uninhabitable because of radiation from nuclear bombs used. However, due to lack of oxygen in the shuttle, residents must come back down to Earth by turning off onto the risk of dying just arrived. They survived, but meet the inhabitants of the Earth returned to almost wild. They are trying to kill them because they feel threatened. In each episode they face many dangers and difficult choices to successfully have peace with the people of the earth.

I think this TV show matches perfectly with the concept of travel, as they discover gradually a new place they do not know.
The first season is not great because they are not enormously actions or twists, I think it’s because it took time to develop the story. But the second season is exciting because there are a lot of actions in a short time.

A room with a view

Hi everybody!!

I don’t know if some of you know who is Edward Forster? Well, he is a british author who comes from london, and more than everything, he is the author of « A room with a view », which is one of his most famous novel.
The principal subject of the novel is about the critic of the english society.
They are also many romantic things in the story (well, globally, the principal character is a woman, and she must choose between two persons) so if you don’t like it I don’t recommand you to read it haha!

What else? If you don’t like reading, good news for you, this novel has got an adaptation in movie, directed by James Ivory (who is also british) and released in 1985.
Perhaps you’ve already saw the film, or read the book!
What are your impressions?

The Woman in Black.

Hi everyone ! Today, i would like speak about the last movie i saw in cinema : The Woman In Black : Angel Of Death.
This is the second part of The Woman In Black with the famous Harry Potter’s actor : Daniel Radcliffe. (He is a very interessant character in this first film).
The Woman In Black 2 is a supernatural thriller and drama directed by Tom Harper.
The story takes place in the same place than the first movie : in a big mansion in a desert place, surrounded by marshes in the north west of England. This is during the second world war, few orphans are send with two women for leave this environment of chaos and take some rest and education. But, of course, they don’t expect that this cold and (really really) scary mansion is inhabited by an other person. And this isn’t nobody : the woman in black. She is a kind of terrifying dark ghost without clear face. In the first film, we understand finally that she steals children from people who see her and so kill them in terrible conditions. This is very horrible, they are burn or hanged or strangled, things like that. She does this because of her difficult past, someone take her child off her and she assists at his horrible death (he drowned) by a window of the mansion, without can doing anything, then she hanged her and since this moment she’s back for doing the same horror to other people for they lived what she lived with the same fright.
So, personally, i really like watching horror movies (but never alone, of course). And i really enjoyed the first one, and the second is really interessant too, but more scarying than the first ! And this horror movie is really interessant too, thanks to the suspension and the story that we understand not easyly and not quickly. People must use their brain, and this is very cool than an other horror movie with just scream and blood.
Finally, i advised you a lot to watching this movie, but, i warn you.. Even if i watched a lot of horror movies, this one scared me a lot. (I hate you screamers).
And if you saw it, did you enjoy it ? Or are you too funky to do this ?

Scrubs, Toubib or not toubib.

Scrubs is a serie TV, created by Bill Lawrence and broadcasted on NBC (an american chanel) between 2001 and 2008. Afterwards, on the ABC channel between 2009 and 2010.

This serie tells us, the adventures of the staff’s Hospital named « Sacred Heart » and more preciselly that of John Dorian surnamed J.D and played Zach Braff. In spite of his Job: doctor, he is a big kid who lose himself in his thought  rebroadcast by his off voice. He always imagines zany scenes inspired  by the reality which it’s shows on the screen sometimes in the middle of a talk between the characters.

Early in the serie, JD is a young resident who enters the Sacred Heart Hospital, as his best friend and roommate, the apprentice surgeon Christopher Turk. They are accompanied in their first steps in their comrade Elliot Reid, a young brilliant but neurotic woman charm which JD succumbs immediately by Carla Espinosa, a nurse with a strong character who does not leave indifferent Turk. On his first day, JD quickly became the main scapegoat of special concierge hospital. At the same time, he quickly finds a mentor in Dr. Perry Cox, whose perpetual bad mood and work addiction hide its inability to manage his personal life; it is the main bulwark of patients and internal against cynicism director of the Sacred Heart, tyrannical Dr. Robert « Bob » Kelso.

Emblem of the Hospital

The series features a narration in the first person, realy talkative characters, subplots that intertwine, waterfalls, and surreal scenes that represent the daydreams of the characters. Those comic aspects are correct by poignant scenes on the challenges for doctors to manage death and problems in their personal lives. This combination of comic and dramatic elements distinguishes it from other medical dramas such Urgences or Grey’s Anatomy, which is often seen as a pastiche. At the end of most episodes, JD summarizes the moral or the theme of the episode which took place in a series of plans that generally shows how this has affected each character. The series has many references to American popular culture, including movies, books, and other television series. Many are parodied through the many thoughts JD.

From Left to Right: Carla Espinosa, Perry Cox, Elliot Reid, John Dorian, Robert Kelso, Christopher Turk

I find this serie really amusing, funny and sometimes embarassing. So if like this king of series I advise you « Scrubs ».

Imitation game by Morten Tyldum

Last week at the cinema I had the chance to see «  Imitation Game ».
The film takes place during the Second World War.
Alan Turing, mathematician is charged by the British government to discover the secret of the Enigma encryption machine, known like inviolable.  He is at the head of  researchers and linguists. Turing works on the complexity of the machine. He will have decrypt to be able actually decrypt German messages. This machine can lead to the victory of the war.
The film then tells the impressive life of a man who is willing to do anything to change the course of the Second World War and History.
It is also the portrait of a man who found himself condemned by the society of the time because of his homosexuality.
Today the society has changed (and thankfully) but it is a very touching movie, and we go not unscathed.

I found it really touching and really gripping. I was sad when I finished it. We don’t expect the end of the film. It makes feel like living. It is a good lesson of life.

The film was nominated for best film, best actor (Benedict Cumberbatch), best actress in a Supporting Role (Keira Knightley) and  best director for Oscar’s prise.

Thus, the film works well due to the genius of Benedict Cumberbatch and the way he has inhabited Alan Turing’s persona. This is why I advise you, it is currently at the cinema :

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer: Moral and Humor

The moral is presented in numrous way in the novel, usually negative. With the character of Huck and the fact that Tom is involved in an association to ban tobacco and alcohol, we shows the desire of the forbidden, which shows that Twain morality is the main source of immorality. In test like What Is Man? Twain developp this idea, considering that it is the moral freedom given to the man that makes man capable of do evil. At the Church is hypocrisy and vanity of the Reverend Twain ridiculed throughout the episode good point shared by Tom with his friends. This hypocrisy is also directly criticized by Twain when he evoques the responsability of the girls, and the absurd moralistic constraint they are required to applied. lines or moral feelings that are not the subject of irony or it’s critical are these from the feeling of the characters: Aunt Polly is an old generous woman, which prevents punishing Tom: this defect is a nice trait of character.

Twain uses forms of humor. A typical example is the practical joke, which involves placing a person in a situation of  victim, like when Tom pretends to be dead, and all of the village cry him. This kind of humor is not without cruelty, like Twain shows with Tom back to his village, hesitating to prevent his aunt that he is alive to saved him from her grief before giving it to not spoil the surprise effect of this kind of jokes.

Galveston by Nic Pizzolatto

As we are studying the notion of Travelling, Initiatory Journey and Exile in class, I decided to talk about a book I read recently.

It’s a book entitled Galveston, written by Nic Pizzolatto (famous writer and scriptwriter, in particular for the serie True Detective). The book deals with a man, called Roy Cady, a texan « gangster » who kills people on the request of his boss. One day he felt in a trap with a fellow and he succeed to stay alive. Unfortunately a girl was on the crime scene, so he has to keep her with him and they decided to go away from the town and hit the road until Galveston, Roy’s hometown. On the road, the girl, called Rocky wants to take with them her little sister, Tiffany. They finally arrive at Galveston, but the story isn’t ended.

Galveston de Nic Pizzolatto

It’s an interested book because the story is told by a past point of view and also by a present one. In that way it emphasizes the suspence of the plot and it gives a deep dimension to the story. During this road-trip we discover Lousiana and Texas, two wonderful states, amazing landscapes and interesting way of life, so different from ours.

I advise you to read it because the writing style is almost easy and descriptions of landscapes make me dream a lots.

Good reading !

PS: The serie is also amazing and I really advise you to watch it right now, it permits to stpe back about our society and our way of life. The actors are just perfect and the plot is so suspenceful ! 😀 Enjoy

Lord of the Flies : from the book to the movie

After the first cinematographic adaptation of the famous novel by William Golding, Harry Hook, an english director, decided to direct a new cinematographic adaptation of Golding’s novel, in 1990. Even though I never watched the first one, I can say that the adaptation by Hook (we saw in class) is really close to the book. They tried to recreate the universe and the atmosphere of the book and they completly succeed. Some actors are not really close to the characters physical description of the book (like Ralph or Jack), but it is not a problem.

The atmosphere, like in the novel, is really oppresive and increase more and more through the action.

I know that this movie does not pleased everyone, because of the violence reign between these young boys, but personnaly It didn’t bother or disturb me, In fact, I was really concentrated in the way they would retranscribe the book into a movie, and I wasn’t disappointed.

The good news is that, if you want to watch this movie , you can find it on youtube, in english, of course, with english subtitles !

Chocolat

Who don’t we  like  chocolate ? For chocolate addicts I recommend this book, Chocolat. It was published in 2000, written by Jeanne Harris, a british writer.

The story begin in 1959, with the arrival in french village of Viviane and her daughter. The village’s context is complicated, ti is traditional and religious. Viviane decided to restart the confectionery during The Carême (The Lent in English,  a religious celebration  where everyone should fast during 40 days). The village see her as a danger because her chocolate quickly begins to change the lives of people. The Town’s leaders even will accused her to be a witch. On this point it is possible that they were right ?

This book has an adaptation by Lasse Hallström,  a canadian director, in 2001. With famous actors like Juliette Binoche, Johnny Depp, Judi Dench and Alfred Molina. This movie received many awards for the Best ActressSoundtrack Composer of the Year and other.

I recommend this book and this film for the pleasure of senses. So enjoy your meal !

The Ark of the Kerguelen

Today I will talk about my latest reading, « The Ark of the Kerguelen » written by Jean-Pierre Kauffmann in 1993. In this travelogue the author recounts his journey in the Kerguelen Islands with soldiers. His main activities are to visit this very remote archipelago of the France. Through this journey, the author travels to various locations on the islands. He tells the history of these places and gives us interesting anecdotes on these isolated lands and ignored by many people. I recommend this book for those who want to improve their knowledges in geography. This story has for main theme, the loneliness which is very present on the Kerguelen.

Matilda the film

Matilda is a fantasy film. The film was directed by Dani Devito based on the novel from Roald Dahl and released in 1996. The plot is about a young girl who is extremely smart and loves reading, but she has to face a lot of difficulties, her parents Harry and Zinna mistreat her. Harry enrollees Matilda in a school in whitch the headmistress Agatha Trunchbull severly punishes the students. Matilda’s teachers name is Jennifer Honey and she is the only one who see’s matilda’s talents. The young girl soon finds out that she has telekinetic powers, she can control things with her mind.

« Lord of the Flies » by The Simpson!

The episode 14 of season 9 of Simpson is inspired by the book “Lord of the Flies” of William Golding. The children find themselves abandoned on an island, Bart represents Ralph, Nelson represents Jack and Milhouse represents Piggy.

I leave you with an extract of the episode! If you are curious to see the episode, will know that it’s really quite carried out!!

The Book Thief

Last week I read a new book and I found it great.

The Book Thief is a novel written by Markus Zusak and published in 2005. The story takes place during World Ward II. It’s about Liesel Meminger who is the main character. She is a little German and she is separated from her mother because she can’t keep her safe. So, she arrived in the house of Hans and Rosa Huberman. Their neighbours are the Steiner and Rudy Steiner became Liesel’s best friend. All this important characters live in a poor street called « Traumen » and this would say « dream », this is important for the story and a little ironical. The last important character is Max Vandenburg and he is Jewish, this is really important. So many adventures happening to Liesel and all these characters and I found it very interesting and touching. The last points I have very appriciated  in this book is that the story takes place in the German camp and that the narrator is the death, and it’s a point of view new to me so this make the story more interesting to me. And of course the story talks about a book thief, but I don’t want to spoil any person who is interesting by this story.

I have already watched the film of The Book Thief. And it’s a good adaptation and this talk about the same subject of course. But I found it less interesting and touching than the book (like every book’s adaptation I’ve seen). And there are scene which have changed and I found it too bad.

So if you are interested by this story I advise you to read the book because it’s really more touching, moving and I found it really well written. So, make your choice, but choose the book.

« How sleeps the beast », Don Tracy

Anyone who was in my class in 10th grade is probably going to be like « Again ? » but I have to admit we read pretty good books that year so after « The island of Dr. Moreau » here is an article on « How sleeps the beast » by Don Tracy which was released in 1938 ine the USA and 1951 in France.
I’m pretty sure this book could fit  the notion « The writer in his time ». It tells us the story of a young african-american whose name is Jim, one night drunk and lonely he gives into violence and end up murdering a white woman. A crime, yes but that’s not what the author denounces even though he never decreases the guilt and responsibilty of Jim in what happened. But for any crime in a democratic country a criminal has the right to have a trial before the sentence is pronounced.
Jim never got a trial. Why ? Because this period was filled with racism and people turned this event into a reason to let out their anger, to feed the beast and its thirst for blood. How ? By taking Jim out of prison and lead him to lynching.
You probably understood by now this book is nothing like a gentle novel, it’s tough, rough, brutal and it contains scenes of an incredible violence even if their sometimes unexplicit. But even considering this I loved this novel obviously not because of the story line which is quite disturbing but because of every societal problem the novel deals with. Racism, savagery with group violence, cowardice with our submission to the common behaviour to garantee our own safety. « The writer in his time » maybe but those problems have no time, and maybe if more people read novels such as this one they could understand that looking away is our biggest problem, because every time you do so you let it happen again.
On the whole, I fiercely recommand this book, because the beast is truly sleeping in each of us and it’s not alone our humanity is in there with it and maybe its time for it to come the surface and keep the beast in its cage before it’s too late.

The Walking Dead from comics to TV

Before becoming the well known TV serie staring with Andrew Lincoln, The Walking Dead was a comic books serie created by Robert Kirkman and Tony Moore.

These comic books had been first published in 2003 and was at first initled Dead Planet ; it tells the story of a group lead by Rick Grimes, the main character, who tries to survive in an apocalyptic world invaded by zombies.

Warmly acclaim by the critics the comics had finally been adapted to screen into a TV serie directed by Franck Darabont

The Road

The Road is a novel written by Cormac McCarthy and published in 2006. There is a cinematographic adaptation directed by John Hillcoat in 2009, sometimes faithful to the novel, sometimes distant.

The story takes place in a post-apocalyptic world. It was devastated by a cataclysm. Giant fires have ravaged cities and countryside whereas wildlife has disappeared. The sun doesn’t appear behind the ash clouds. Many of the remaining human survivors have resorted to cannibalism, scavenging the detritus of city and country alike for flesh. A father and his young son wander in this setting, their scarce possessions collected in a supermarket trolley and backpacks. They are in search of a paradise and humanity, unfortunately, lost forever. Now, barbarism and violence dominate.

This initiatory journey focuses on the transmission and the subjectivity of values. The relationship between the father and his son (named in this way all the time in the novel) is really moving; they are bound by duty of survival and the desire to perpetuate the memory and culture in an age of darkness and despair. We can established a link with the myth of Sisyphus, the king of Corinth, in Greek mythology, who was punished for chronic deceitfulness by being compelled to roll an immense boulder up a hill, only to watch it roll back down, and to repeat this action forever. In The Road, we don’t know why the protagonists are here and they ignore themselves the future, perfect comparison with human condition.

It’s a very touching novel, haunting and heartbreaking at the same time. According to Michael Chabon (The New York Review of Books), ‘it is as a lyrical epic of horror’. The novel was awarded the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for Fiction in 2006.

The Principal characters of Lord Of The Flies

Lord Of The Flies was written by William Golding and published in 1954. As you know because we studied an extract and watched the film, it tells the story of a plane carrying british boys from high society that crashed on a desert Island where all the adults died. The kids must survive by themselves.

The group must build an organized society to survive. Each kid on the Island has a signification.

Ralph is the smartest, he is almost a teenager and he became the leader of the group by being elected, he symbolizes the republic and the reason in the group.

Jack takes gradually the control of the group by being brutal, he represent the warrior power. He is charismatic and adventurous contrary to the Ralph’s reason.

Roger is the right arm of Jack, he represent the disturbing and violent cruelty, the pleasure of hurting and killing

Piggy is the fragile obese kid, he represent knowledge but also dependence and weakness, his glasses can makes fire that is the most usefull thing on the island. He is despised by the warrior power but he needs him to make fire, so his glasses were stole by Jack and Piggy died, pushed off a cliff.

Simon represent wisdom and positivity, he loves the nature of the island. He was the first kid who died in the group in a bloody sacrifice on the altar of superstition when he went to destroy it by bringing the truth. So his death represent the loss of truth. He also represent the Christ figure in this novel because he has the capacity to see beyond the wrong ideas and what he lived in this novel can be compared to the life of Jesus Christ.

Lord Of The Flies is sometimes considered like a novel for children, but it’s clear that William Golding created those characters to raise dark and deep thoughts about great ideas and subjects about society.

Fish Tank, a film directed by Andrea Arnold

I would like to speak about Fish Tank, a film directed by Andrea Arnold in 2009. This is the story of Mia, a rebel teenager who lives in a poor area. Her only passion is dance, more precisely hip hop. One day, the arrival of her mother’s boyfriend will change her life. Mia doesn’t know her father, so it’s difficult for her to accept this new man. She is a sad and nervous girl who has a strange link with femininity. She wants to lead a better life and find friendship or love. Through this film, we follow the main character’s evolution.

The subject is presented without so much artifice and the main charater is considered as an “anti-heroe”. The Here, Andrea Arnold uses some elements that belong to the social realism. Indeed, her main character lives in poor suburbs surrounded with waste grounds. Violence, poverty and youth are the themes developed during this film. Framings are clamped, the camera is often carried over the shoulder, we have many subjective points of view which create a proximity with the characters and the environment. With this proximity, the audience can ear Mia’s heart beating and also her respiration. This strengthen the realism. Long shots are only used to show urban landscapes. The depth of field is low so the image is often blurred and also jerky. The camera is in perpetual movement to show that Mia is disturbed and also to translate her feelings. Over framings show that the young girl is really ill-at-ease and she is trapped.

In this film, the main character is often nervous and she is as a fish in his aquarium: she is shut up in her hard destiny and this explain the title of the film. At the beginning, her universe is restricted but when she is more self-confident and when there are interesting opportunities, the space becomes more open and there is an evolution of Mia’s character. The place where the young girl dances symbolize her isolation. Settings seems to be real. More over, much of the actors aren’t professional. All this elements strengthen the realism of the film and the audience believes more in the story.

I advise you to watch this film if you like realistic film!

The adaptations of the novel Richard Matheson’s  » I am Legend «

The novel I’m going to present is a novel whose adaptations are multiple and that was a great success.
« I am legend » is a science fiction novel by the American author Richard Matheson published in 1954. Richard Matheson tells the tragic story of a man who is the only survivor of an epidemic that has transformed all the inhabitants of the planette into horrible monsters that look like a mix between zombies and vampires. Humanity is reached by an evil and that man is immune but despite that it was the world to him, fear and loneliness gnaws him. Richard Matheson establishes in his novel a new society in which the hero of the story is not in his place.

Among all the novels of Richard Matheson, it’s « I am legend » that will generate the most interest of filmmakers. Between 1964 and 2007, four adaptations of this novel have emerged.
« The last man on earth » is the original adaptation of the novel directed by Ubaldo Ragona in 1964, the second adaptationt is that of Boris Sagal realised in 1971 called « The Omega Man » who adapts to the historical backdrop of the Cold War and civil wars. Then, Griff Sagal adaptation called « I am omega » released in 2007 is a Low cost adaptation released one month before the adaptation of Francis Lawrence. It’s this last adaptation called « i am legend » who has that most caught my attention.

It is for me a great post-apocalyptic film that plunges us into a dark and oppressive atmosphere with specatculaire view of New York completely empty. The hero is played by Will Smith who is a epoustouflant actor, and he succeeds to send us all the emotions of a man who is alone on earth. The film could be criticized for its lack of fidelity of the Richard Matheson’s novel, but it’s this modernity that I loved because it passed a society or the hero is not in his place in a society or the hero is the savior of humanity.

Mommy

Mommy is a Canadian film directed by Xavier Dolan and released in 2014. It’s a drama film and it was presented at the Cannes Film Festival in 2014 and won the Jury Award. This movie is a great success.

That’s the story of a mother and his son. In Canada, a new law appears and allows distressed parents to abandon their troubled children to the hospital system. Diane “Die” Despres, a single mother, must pick her teenage son Steve from the institution where he lives, because he causes several problems and this time, he hurts a little boy who were in the same hospital that him. Steve, who has ADHD, is wild and violent, yet charismatic. At the heart of their problems, they try to make ends meet, thanks to unexpected help from the opposite neighbor, Kyla. All three begin to find an equilibrium shape, and soon hope.

For me, this is a beautiful movie which create a lot of emotions to the spectator. All of this film is great; the story, the various plans, the actors, the music etc… everything is perfectly synchronized. It became one of my favorite movies and I recommend to watch this perfect film!! Xavier Dolan has a real talent and he has also his own style.

]
The work of the director is exceptional but also in other realisations like the clip written and executed by Xavier Dolan for Indochine:

The Picture of Dorian Gray

Oscar Wilde is a famous writer of the victorian era. During this time, novels override poetry that’s why, even if he beggan to write a collection of poems in the tradition of esthetic, he quickly started to write plays and short stories in which he went deeper and deeper in his research of the ambiguity of beauty and often hurted himself to the strict rules of the Victorian era, especially concerning his plays.

The Picture of Dorian Gray, his only noveldepict the story of a virtuous young beautiful man, Dorian Gray, recently rich after his father’s death. He inherits of his father’s domain and meet some former friends of his father, particulary a painter Basil Hallward who quickly become his friend and who is absolutely fascinate by Dorian’s beauty and decide to paint a portrait of him. During his work, he presents him Lord Henry who live a life of decay completely opposite of Dorian’s one. But quickly, he leads Dorian in the darkest side of London, convicing him that his beauty his a gift and that money, youth and lust are the best things that could ever happened to him. When Dorian’s portrait is finally finished, he is flabbergasted by is own appearance. So he organize a party to show it to is entire new circle of friends. During this evening when his beauty subjugates everyone, he admits to Henry that he would like to stay like the paint depict him forever as he is nearly jalous of it and of the admiration that it seems to cause. He ignores the consequences of his words: he just sell his soul to the devil and from that moment, he stop to get older, to bleed or to keep any physical mark. His portait is now the reflect of his soul, putrefying, turning into a monster as he lives more and more in sin.

In this novel, Oscar Wilde deals with the ambiguity of beauty, decay and duplicity, using themes of virtue, vices and evil. He develops there the philosophical doctrine that consist in believe that the research of pleasur is the only aim of human existance : hedonism. His story reminds us Narcisse as narcissism is one of the main point. They are also both afraid by death and added to they obsescion for themselves, they are the only cause of their tragic end.

Critics violently welcomed that novel that offend British moral, in partucular because the writer did not explecitely express his choice between vice and morality. However he answered that a dook can not be moral or immoral, it is just well written or not.

Free fall by William Golding

This book is the fourth novel of the English writer, William Golding, published in 1959.                                                                                                                                      It’s about a talented painter, named Samuel Mountjoy, who is a prisoner of war in Germany. A Gestapo officer, Dr Halde, asks questions to Samuel to find out about escape organisation, because some prisoners managed to escape from the camp. But Sammy denies, so the officer decided to locked him in a small room.                                                While he is lock in the darkness room, he wonders how he got there and particularly how he lose his freedom.                                                                                                                 I think that this book is really interesting because it show the conditions of war, espcially in camps, and how people tried to survive and still have hope.

The private diary of Mr Darcy, by Maya Slater

After read Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, It will be interesting to read this book.        We can know what Mr Darcy really think by discovering his secret about his life in Georgian London, have more details about his relationship with Elizabeth Bennet by describing us how he gradually fells in love with her.                                                         This book is a captivating novel of love, pride, passion and of course prejudice.               The story is, of course, told in the first person narrative where Mr Darcy tells us his thoughts and observations all along the book.                                                                      The most famous romantic hero describes us his own story and their points of view.

Animal farm, by George Orwell

Last year, in English class, we saw a film named Animal Farm

This film (which is also a book) describe a farm in which animal don’t want be control by human anymore, so they decided to rebel by taking the power and to disappear human being. But later one pig is going to be a dictator, they will kill others animals which disobey. He obliges the animals of the farm to work hard by promising a better life.                                                                                                                                              This film can be compared as USSR regime, where animals stand up for their ideals.      He do a summary of the methods used by Stalin, because there are cult of personality and propaganda.

Leonard Bernstein

Leonard Bernstein (19918-1990) is an american composer, conductor, pianist and pedagogue. One of his most famous master was Aaron Copland and he studied in Harvard University. He began as an assistant for Serge Koussevitzky and then for the Philharmornic Orchestra of New York. He was known in 1954 thanks to the TV when he conducted the Symphony of the Air Orchestra. After this event he presented the Young’s People Concert, a TV program, where he taught playfully for children classical music.

He got an international recognition for his work with the Philharmonic Orchestra of New York where he worked as conductor from 1958 to 1969. He was and is always very famous for his composition of West Side Story, a musical comedy. He conducted most famous formations of the world like the Philharmonic Orchestra of Vienna, the Philharmonic Orchestra of London, the National Orchestra of France,… He was very talented because of his ease in all repertory, even if he had a predilection for Gustav Mahler (he said: « Mahler, it’s me »).

He wrote three ballets (Fancy Free, Facsimile, Dybbuk), three opera (Trouble in Tahiti, Candide, A Quiet Place), three simphony,… many other things like musical comedy or music for films and for choral or chamber music. I really advice you to listen to Bernstein’s work. It is amazing how he can change of repertory jazz or classical a kind of thing wich is very difivult for musicians, moreover for a conductor! But if you don’t like classical music, at least you must see West Side Story by Robert Wise (1961) with Jerome Robbins as choreographer for our culture!

John Ronald Reuel Tolkien and his works The Hobbit and the Lord of The Rings.

To begin, I would like to speak about Tolkien. I know that we had a biography in class but I want to remind you the life of this man. He was born in South Africa in 1892 but he spent his childhood in England (where were his roots) after his father’s death. In 1904, he became orphan with her brother because of his mother’s death. So with this event they were under the responsability of a priest: Father Francis Morgan. Tolkien knew the out-break of the First World War and after to be graduated at Exeter College, he must have gone in France as a second lieutenant in the Lancashire Fusiliers. After his come back in England, he worked as a professor of Anglo-Saxon at Oxford. He was too a philologist who was and is always admired in all the world. In his life he wrote some novels and poems. He was too an essayist and died in 1973.

To continue, I would like to present you his first novel published in 1937: The Hobbit. I think that you know that this book is to introduce The Lord of The Rings. Moreover now with the new films which were realised recently by Pete Jackson, you might know the story of Bilbo… But if you are like me and have seen just an extract (which I found very long, a little bit borring) or may be nothing, I will sum up his adventures. Bilbo lived quietly when a man comed to take him as a thief. But what this passific creature must steal? A precious stone to give it to dwarves. However this stone is kept by a dragon… During his travel to go to the cave of the dragon in a mountain (in fact an old town of dwarves), he found a ring which have a beautiful power: it permits to disappear! And this object is very important in the Lord of the Rings.

If you are again like me and never seen the films, I will resume this second work. Frodon (a member of Bilbo’s family) must destroy the ring because Sauron needs it to can have the power on the world. Still to destroy it, Frodon must go on the country of his ennemy: in Mordor. Parallelly you follow during the story others characters and some wars.

I think that in fact Tolkien is a genius or may be a crazy man to create this universe. He created a new language for Elves, a new system of calendar,… At the end of his books you have family trees of the Sacquet, The Touques, the Brandebouc and the Master Samsagace. There is too the chronology of the old Earth and this is like our history class! Tolkien must have been in an other wolrd to create this fantasy world!

Many people say that it’s difficult to read him but I don’t think.Yes it can be a little be slow sometimes but it’s real pleasant to read this beautiful work! Nevertheless if you find it too long you can listen the CD of the songs which are wrote in Tolkien’s work and created by himself.  You have too a short story about a character that we met in this work: The adventures of Tom Bombadil (1967). And now with tolkienian you have too many many many by-products to can find the atmosphere of this fantasy world. But in fact if you want really this atmosphere, read the books!!!!

Lisey’s Story.

I would like to share a novel with you.
This novel is entitled Lisey’s Story and was written by Stephen King.
This man is an author that everyone has already heard of and who is a reference of the fantastic and mystery literature. He has’nt lived a happy childhood and he was passionate for book since he was very young.

During twenty five years, Lisey have shared the secrets and the anxieties of her husband, who was a successful writer named Scott Landon. He was also a tormented men. When he died, Lisey found a treasure hunt in his stuff and she discovered that he had made it for her.

She also had to face the disease of her sister and was confronted to her history and her husband’s which she had repressed. She also had to face a man who wanted the manuscripts of her husband.
In his novel, King explore ideas such as death. He also mention in a very original way the secret language that a couple in love can use.

This love story is very different  from the ones we are used to. The author brings the reader into the intimacy of a couple and immerses him in an very realistic oneiric’s world, far from the horrors. We, readers, are put in a strange atmosphere with a lot of suspense. Which brings us a psychological terror. The story seems to be self conscious but still, it remains easy to understand. It is a very touching book.

« Walk 1700 kilometers in three months »

« Wild » is an American drama film directed by Jean-Marc Vallée, and released in 2014. This is an adaptation of the story of the same name, written by Cheryl Strayed.

After the death of her mother (Laura Dern) and a divorce she didn’t want, the main character, Cheryl Strayed, decided to give herself a challenge: travel 1700 kilometers in three months, alone, on the Pacific Crest Trail, that is to say a hiking linking Mexico to Canada. The idea is to be face with herself to learn how to control his fears, his limits, his past and the ghosts that accompany her. She was addicted to alcohol and hard drugs .. This film is perfectly suited to the concept of initiatory journey because this woman is trying to rebuild herself and decides to make a long hike on the West Coast of the United States. Adventure is challenging: she walks under unbearable heat, in the rain, through a snowy area, crosses rivers, etc.

The landscape through which she passes, are those of Nevada, California, Oregon and Washington. They are very beautiful, really impressive and look like those that can be seen in « Into the Wild » directed by Sean Penn. They are breathtaking too and give constantly the desire to learn more about this famous « Pacific Crest Trail » that 300 people from around the world are trying to make ends every year!

Cast Away

Cast Away is a Robert Zemeckis movie about a voyage and return story. Starring by Tom Hanks, Chuck Noland (What a premonitory name) is a FedEx employee, time-obsessed systems engineer, who travels worldwide resolving productivity problems for his job. While flying through a violent storm, his airplane crashes into the Pacific Ocean, precisely in the south pacific. The film depicts his attempts to survive on the island using remaining parts of his plane’s cargo. He searches for water, food, survivors and opens the packages, finding a number of potentially useful items. He initially tries to signal for rescue and makes an escape attempt with the remaining parts of his life-raft, but he cannot pass the coral reefs surrounding his island. His only friend and rest of civilization on this deserted island that he can talk to is a volleyball ball that he named Wilson and has paint a face on it with his blood.

Wilson

Four years later he is still on the island and have created livable condition. Building a lifeboat he is able to navigate away and come back to civilization. Upon returning to civilization, Chuck learns that he has long been given up for dead and his friends and family had held a funeral. His wife, Kelly has since married Chuck’s dentists (which is comic because, on the island Chuck is obliged to operate himself) and has a daughter. Nothing will remain as before…

La Vérité sur l’affaire Harry Quebert

« La Vérité sur l’affaire Harry Quebert » is a novel written by Joël Dicker who is a swiss writer.

I really wanted to talk about this novel because I think it’s a real masterpiece, I read it during the summer holidays when I was in England and every evening I couldn’t help my self reading some chapters…

The story is a little bit complicated. In fact it’s the story of Marcus Goldman who is a young writter, his firt novel was a real success but then he doesn’t find the inspiration. So he decides to look for inspiration in the New Hampshire where his former university teacher, Harry Quebert, lives. But this one has been just arrested for the murder of Nola Kellergan, a young woman gone since 1975.

In fact, each chapter doesn’t take place in the same period : one is about the 70’s, one is about the studies of Marcus Goldman when he was in the university and one is about the present, after the arrest of Harry. Marcus wants to prove that his former teacher, who is his friend, is innocent, so he investigates alone, without the police help.

I find this book very good, we have the impression to be in a movie because there are flashback all the time. I advice you to read it, there is a lot of suspens.

The Old Man and the Sea

The Old Man and the Sea is a novel written by Ernest Hemingway in Cuba in 1951. It was published in 1952. This short story tells about Santiago, an aging fisherman, who struggles with a marlin (a giant fish) in the Gulf Stream.

I really like this book because the writing is special, it is surprising at first but we know why the text is writting like that. Then it adds charm of the book. As the action happens in the same place in the ocean you might think that it gets boring but it’s not the case!

Have you already read this Hemingway’s book? do you like it, or would you read it?

Mere Anarchy – Woody Allen

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/411HTFcMKSL.jpg

Woody Allen is more famous as film director. Indeed, he directed a lot of films such as Annie Hall, Manhattan and more recently Magic in the Moonlight. He won 4 Oscars.

However, he is also a writer. He is famous for his particular humour which made his renown and his negative vision of the life and our society. I was curious to see how Woody Allen could express himself in a book. Last week, I rode a few short stories extracted from Mere Anarchy, a collection of 18 short stories, written by Woody Allen in 2008. If you permit me this word, I would say that these shorts stories are rather surrealistic. People evolve in a nonsense atmosphere.

He imagines that famous philosophers wrote essays whose aim is to learn to lose weight. Thus, he imagines that Nietzsche has written an essay entitled my slimming secret. After, he describes how the world would be if people speak only with scientific terms in order to explain common acts. This could result in :“I woke up Friday but as the universe is in expansion it took me longer than usual to find my robe.” He also tells the story of a dentist who kills his patient because he tells his life when he is treating them. He describes also a trial during which Mickey testifies. I won’t describe you all these crazy stories. I let you discover them. This book is s a satire of our society, described with the particular humour of Woody Allen.

I advice you to read it because it’s easy and quickly to read. These short stories are gripping and really funny.

The Terminal

I would like to present a poignant and touching film based on a true story.

The real person to whom this tragic event happened is an Iranian called Mehran Karimi Nasseri.

The terminal is an American film directed by Steven Spielberg in 2004. The genre of the film is: Comedy and tragedy.

The main actor is Tom Hanks who is also a great actor.

This is the story of an Iranian tourist, Viktor Navorski, which at the time of registration at a US airport is blocked by the fact that his country, Krakozie just seen its government overthrown, he is considered undesirable for the authorities.
Throughout history, Viktor knows some surprising evolution, it begins to « work » at the premises of the airport to feed, learns to speak American, to make friends or even fall in love with a stewardess air.

A surprising and touching evolution. One can only feel compassion for the character of Viktor, although it must be admitted that to the beginning of the film, doesn’t has a very good grip,I highly recommend it.

Vivre Vite by Philippe Besson

Hi there 🙂

Today, here I am to give you a review about a french book that has been recently released about a famous american actor. It’s named « Vivre Vite » and it has been written by Philippe Besson. I decided to write about this book because it’s related to James Dean’s life, who is one of my favourite actor and who is a real icon in Hollywood’s cinema during the 50’s.

This book is quite different from the biographical type that we all know. Here, the writter decides thanks to the testimonials that he got from James Dean’s relatives to write his book according these people and James Dean point of view : In others words, it tells James Dean’s life through different characters. For example the book opens on Mildread Dean’s point of view, who’s James Dean’s mother. She relates his childhood and her thoughts about her son. This system goes on and on until James Dean’s death.

Of course, because of this system, we move away from the biographical aspect and inevitably it gains a fictionalized look but if you don’t mind about it, the reading is really pleasant. Indeed, the book is really lively because at each chapter, we have a new point of view so the book gains a certain rythm. Moreover, something else has catched my attention : the writting style is made in the way that you have the feeling the character is talking to you about this actor; it’s really a weird when you start to read it but then you can’t stop (I read it in one setting) because it’s captivating. In fact, you see the main character who is evolving through someone else eyes. That’s why this book is really moving and interesting. Everybody knows that James Dean died very young and a real myth was born from this icon.

That’s why I came to the conclusion that to understand someone’s life and personnality, you have to take into account his relatives and his friends statements because it can appears as really useful. For example, I didn’t know but the Hollywood Environment was not that pleasant and people are vicious : some actors felt James Dean’s death as a relief because they were jealous. In a more psychological way I discovered that James Dean was a disturbed person and who has always had a problem with his identity and the way he looks like but I don’t want to spoil you the whole book so I think that I will stop here. 😉

By the way, if you someone interested in Hollywood and James Dean, don’t hesitate, this book is made for you 😉

The Perks of Being a Wallflower.

Recently, I have seen The Perks of being a Wallflower, directed by Stephen Chbosky. And, I was very surprised to discover a so pleasant film about the teen discontent. Charlie, the main character, comes to the High School. He’s alone, outcast. He’s rejected by others because he’s different. We discover throughout the story that his best friend’s dead, and that he hides a heavy secret about his aunt Isabelle. But Patrick and Sam (his first love), senior students, accept him in their friends group. Thanks to that, Charlie begins to make peace with his past, and to become more confident. Thus, he starts to be really happy.

What I loved in this movie is the optimistic vision of life, I mean, this film gives us the desire to live. Friendship makes us feel more alive despite the past we could know. Personnally, if you are sad, watch this flm, even if there is paradoxically a kind of melancholy, of nostalgia which creates the story.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest

One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest is an american film directed by Milos Forman, released in 1975. This film tells us the story of Randle McMurphy, a man accused of rape and who decided to go to psychiastric hospital instead of going in prison. The role of a man who day after days fall into madness is perfectly interpreted by Jack Nicholson.

Life of Pi, Yann Martel

Yann Martel, a canadian author who has written his novel, realizes that he’s not satisfied. He’s really out of steam and he sends his novel at a wrong adress in a Northern’s country. He stays in India where he’s travelling and in a kind of restaurant he meets a man who says:
-I know a story who makes you a believer.
And the story of Molitor Pi Patel begins like that.
Then, the author met Pi who told him his extraordinary travel which would inspire the film of Angry Lee « Life of pi ».
At the beginning, Pi is a young Indian man.His parents are owners of a zoo and Pi believes to three religions together: the hindouism, the Islam and the Christendom. His family must go in Canada and the boat which leads them there sinks. Pi is the one to survive with the animal and he stays 267 days on the boat withe a tiger.
There’s a suppostion about the animals: they could be human beings that Pi Have turned into animals, the tiger would be Pi himself. He says: What is the importance to know if they are animals or human beings? I prefer the story with the animal

Little House on the Prairie

Yes I know that this story is not the highest in American Literature but is for me a part of my youth ! In « The Little House On The Prairie » Laura Ingalls tells us her story  in the point of view of a teenager and later as an adult. Determined to tell her story, story that Michael Landon has freely adapted into a TV series. Started in 1974, his legendary series has gobbled up the real Laura, embodied by Melissa Gilbert in an avalanche of stupidity.

But let’s get back to the beginning, in 1930. The United Sates  entered in the recession when the real Laura decided to write  her memories, from a small farm in Missouri where she lived with her husband Almanzo. Around sixty, she decided to revisite her youth and celebrated the independence. Rejecting with strength the New Deal of  president Roosevelt. The manuscript, Pioneer Girl, considered too dry and too dark, is refused. That show that the real story is not only about running cheerfully in the meadow !

P.S : Nellie Oleson never existed !

Laura Ingalls

Kenneth Branagh: his passion for Willy

No, Kenneth Branagh isn’t only the Defence Against the Dark Arts instructor Gilderoy Lockhart in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (Chris Columbus, 2002), he is also a great director… Especially when he adapts William Shakespeare!

During his career, Kenneth Branagh adapted five plays written by the famous playwright, beginning with Henry V in 1989, and followed by Much Ado About Nothing (1993), Hamlet (1996), Love’s Labour’s Lost (2000) and As You Like It (2007). He can be considered as the greatest admirer of the playwright…

If the first three adaptations was enormous success all other the world, it isn’t the case for the others. The director wanted to modernize Shakespeare, but it was a fiasco, especially for the film directed by in 2000 (he turns into a romantic Hollywood musical). But the others productions have the merit to be predominant adaptations of playwright’s work, with many distinctions and nominations for an award.

Furthermore, we can find him in Othello, an adaptation directed by Oliver Parker in 1995 with Laurence Fishburne. Kenneth Branagh embodies Iago…
