Pour exprimer le moyen en anglais, on emploie généralement la préposition BY suivie d’un gérondif [base verbale + – ing], ex :
By selecting the best shots, the film producer made sure that …Cette proposition subordonnée est mobile dans la phrase, ex : The film producer made sure that … by selecting the best shots.
Si deux ou plusieurs gérondifs se suivent, on ne met BY que devant le premier, ex : By selecting the best shots and removing unnecessary ones, the film producer made sure that …

Il existe d’autres façons d’exprimer le moyen
- With (= au moyen de) + nom, ex : A film editor can creatively work with the layers of images to rewrite the film.
- Using (= au moyen de + nom, ex : Using the layers of images, a film editor can rewrite the film.
- By means of (= au moyen de) + nom, ex : The sound was created by means of a complicated system of hoses, pipes and rods.
- IN est employé pour souligner la façon / une méthode employée, ex : To say something in English – To write in pencil – to put an idea in writing – to pay in cash – to speak in a loud voice – to leave a room in tears N.b. : IN devant un gérondif peut également exprimer la manière (= en choisissant de …) , ex : He made a big mistake in deciding to remove the studio shots.
- Through + un nom, ex: Most spectators feel frustrated because they simply can’t get a ticket through official channels.
