Les Adjectifs Composés

Tom is a long-toothed teenager. = Tom is a teenager with long teeth. = Tom is a teenager that has long teeth.

Bill is a big-eared boy. = Bill is a boy with big ears. = Tom is a boy that has big ears.

En anglais, pour décrire une personne, on peut le faire en peu de mots en formant des adjectifs composés sur le modèle :

Adjectif de base (ex : big, long, short, …) + un nom appartenant principalement au lexique du corps humain ou animal (ex : hand, eye, ear, …) auquel on ajoute la terminaison –ED.


Si le nom n’appartient pas au lexique du corps humain ou animal, on évite d’employer un adjectif composé du style « a red-carred man», on s’en tient à « a man with a red car ».

Attention ! Ce nom se retrouvant en position d’adjectif, il doit se mettre au SINGULIER ! Par exemple, on dit : « a boy with long teeth », mais « a long-toothed boy ».
Attention aussi, quand on ajoute la terminaison –ED, il ne faut pas oublier de doubler la consonne finale si elle suit une voyelle isolée : « a man with long legs » = « a long-legged man ».

Attention à la prononciation de cette terminaison -ED  des adjectifs: dans certains cas, elle est sonore, même quand elle ne suit pas une consonne dentale (ex : -legged)
